I've tried swopping IDE slots, testing my DVD writer in another pc (where it works fine), but it just will not copy, erase or format blank DVD's. I've got the latest In CD software and all the latest Nero updates but my PC just does'nt want to get involved writing DVD's or CD's....anybody any ideas ? it did once do it OK but now it's stopped doing it http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/compsmash.gif http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/compsmash.gif

try a diferent brand of dvd-r
make sure corrct type of disc for burner- dvd-r or dvd+r
seriously, I just bought some tdk and they didnt work - went back to zerodefects and was burnin again
if this doesnt work then check the jumpers on the back of your drives - one should be master and one slave on any ide ribbon
you will see if your computer detects the drive on bootup by watching the bios and check that windows detects it correctly in the device manager in control panel

Check if Nero IfoTool sees your drive, then put an empty disk in and check info on the DVD through Nero Burning ROM. If it's a RW disk, check if it formats OK.
You could try to update your firmware through the drive's manufacturer's site - this will often help if media do not get recognised or burn bad/not at all.

Thanks for the replies guys. Nero info recognizes it as a DVD+-/RW drive. It just won't format or erase any rewriteable DVD and I've tried several different makes of disk.
I think maybe something has become corrupted and a reformat might be the only solution.

reformat is a bit too much for just a burner not working...
did you try re-install of the dvd drivers?
also check under device manager if any problems are indicated. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_wink.gif

Get the current firmware for the drive and install it, even if it's the same. May have become corrupted. Also make sure Windows is not reserving the burning process for itself.

Ok, where do I check that ?
