Well I'm still new to this sim... but seen some interesting things already. Here's two items of interest I wanted to ask about.

First, I was stalking a large convoy with 3 escorts. I plotted torpedos at one Destroyer and a T3 first. Then tried a C2. I missed the Destroyer and all 3 began pinging... dropping charges etc. I managed to sneak off to the side and watch, then I was ready to manuver into a new position when I heard deck guns flying over my periscope... but the rounds were not even coming close to me... and I heard explosions ? I went to free view to see what the heck was going on and I found that two destroyers were attacking each other with deck guns while the rest of the convoy just went on its merry way. So I imagine a stray shot must have hit a destroyer by accident. IRL that would be bad sure but they wouldnt commence firing to the death at each other. SO I guess that AI just buggered up bad, have to say I dont really like the breakdown of the realistic immersion there. I have to ask... is this a common or rare occurance ?

Next thing I wanted to mention was about ramming. I was in very rough seas... terribly rough. I had a sonar contact nearby but could not get a visual with the scope. No visual meant no firing solution from my crew. Finally at about 250 m I got a visual lock but as soon as I back off even 5 meters the ship is lost.... the visibility is THAT BAD. So in desperation I surface and ram the ship... its a small fishing trawler like boat. I didnt take any damage at all to my hull. I just grazed him... but there were some nasty sounds... his hull dipped then there was a small fire. I pulled away and watched as it took on water and eventually sunk. I got no credit for this and also the sunken ship icon did not show on the map. Is that normal ? Also wondering if you can plot a torpedo solution (manually) on a hydrophone contact and fire from submerged position like say 30m depth without using periscope at all ? Just plotting based on caculations from following and marking the hydrophone contact. Would that work ?

Q1: No, not common.
Q2: Yes, normal. The only way you get credit for ramming is if you put a torp or gun round (deck or AA) into him 1st.
Q3: I believe so, but cannot tell you how. I believe someone here has done it before.

3. You can not fire torpedos deeper than 20M, the doors won't open deeper than that.

Call me a cheater, but I have used this to my advantage http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/mockface.gif Nothing like watching 2 DD's against a Fiji http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/88.gif They basicly take care of eachother, while I have 2 less escorts to watch out for. A good skipper always thinks on his feet http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/metal.gif

I beleive that if you set your TDC to manual mode, you can spin the dials to match the data you calculate, open your doors and fire. I would not recomend this for anything but a close, slow target or a stationary target, too likely you'd miss without at least one good visual mark. I have managed to kill a flower corvette with a non-locked snap-shot, but it was pretty much luck...

For the ship in the fog, if you are that close, match headings, and fire a narrow volly, .5 or 1 deg spread. With a magnetic detonator, , you should be able to score a kill if you are far enough away to arm the torpedoes (what, 250-300 yards?)
