There is a sticky post at the top for those new to multiplayer.
To answer, your question, hit esc while you are playing. A screen will come up with three classes of player, grunt(bullets), engineer (gear) and sniper (scope). Pick a class and then pick the weapons you will use from the pull downs. You will change the next time you die, or you can suicide and apply the change immediately.

I thought you said you were experienced, lol.
Snipers carry a knife, pistol and either a rocket launcher or sniper rifle. You change weapons using the scroll wheel on your mouse.
Maybe you should play the single player campaign before you venture online.

Some things to try.
Check your internet connection to make sure it is on.
Make sure you have the 1.30 and the 1.31 Far Cry patch installed.
Remove -devmode from your Far Cry shortcut or start the game from the CD.
Make sure your firewall is allowing the game to see the internet.
Have your CD Key ready.

Sorry for the long quote from the UBI support center.....
"First, please make sure that you have the latest Patch for Far Cry from http://farcry.ubi.com/patches.php.
You will not be prompted to enter your Far Cry CD key until you use the in-game multiplayer browser for the first time. If you have never used the in-game browser, but instead used third party game services such as GameSpy or The All Seeing Eye, you will need to login to ubi.com through the in-game multiplayer browser at least once to be prompted for your CD key. These other game services will not ask you for a CD key, so if you are getting the 'Invalid CD Key' error, or something similar, you will need to make sure your CD key gets entered through the game.
If you are still encountering CD Key problems, please try the following:
Make sure that you are entering your CD Key correctly including the dashes.
After the first 3 characters in the CD key, there will not be any ‘I’, ‘O’, ‘S’, or ‘Z’ alphabetical characters.

Any firewall technology between the player and our services must be configured appropriately to allow the validation to work. If you are behind a router or firewall, please make sure that the following ports are open in the firewall/router configuration:
UBI.com ports:
TCP: 40000 - 42999
UDP: 41005
FarCry game ports:
Server:
Outgoing port 49001/49002
Incoming is client dependant
Client:
Ingoing port is 49001/49002
Outgoing is client dependant (usually set by the OS automatically)
- In a few cases, these ports may be blocked by your ISP. If you are not behind a firewall/router, please contact your ISP with this port information to verify whether or not these ports are available to you.
- Users with Windows XP will want to make sure that the built-in firewall has been disabled through Windows.
To do this:
1. Go to the Control Panel and open the 'Network Connections'
2. Right-click on your network cards connection icon and choose properties.
3. Click on the 'Advanced' tab and uncheck the 'Internet Connection Firewall' box.
4. Click OK to save the settings.
Game servers handling more players than their bandwidth allows face the possibility of refusing some players with the error ‘Invalid CDKey’ because they will not have a good quality communication with the ubi.com."
Also FC does not seem to like the XP firewall if your using XP:

Dude, Have you played Far Cry before?
hit the "X" key. Also, called the alt-fire key. M4 is single shot or automatic
AG36 is bullets or grenades
OICW is bullets or grenades
Humvees shoot bullets or rockets
If you use the rockets or 'nades too much in an online game you will be called a noob because they do not take any skill to use. Learn to aim and shoot with bullets.

pakmanis,
I've seen this poet before, but I'm not sure how to enter these figures in my router. I have read up on the matter, but still am not clear.
Some specs:
Win XP SP2
AMD 2600+
512 DDR4 RAM
ATI Radeon 9800PRO
Windows Firewall is OFF
No other firewalls are installed.
FarCry is patched up to ver 1.33
I have found the section in the Linksys configuration screen for gaming, which i assume is where I need to be and have added the following info in the appropriate boxes:
UBI.com ports:
TCP: 40000 - 42999
UDP: 41005
Not sure if I did it correctly and it does'nt appear to be a way to paste a screen shot in her, so i will attempt to reproduce what i am seeing.
Application Start End Prot IP
UBI.com 40000 42999 TCP x.x.x.x
UBI.com 41005 41005 UDP x.x.x.x
Where x.x.x.x, I've entered my actual IP of my machine.
There are more port settings in your thread, but I'm not sure how to enter them. I'm not even certain I've entered the preceding correctly.
Please help!
