Just want some confirmation on this topic:

1. Should i stop(o knots) before conducting torpedo attack? Why?

2. Should i open the torpedoes tube before launching or just directly pressing the red button? Why?

3. Should always I press the tick mark on the tdc prior to launching? And should i click the tick mark ONCE for EVERY tubes? Why

4. Why the spread angle of a salvo is always to the right(east) Can i set the spread angle to the left(west). What's the best spread angle for about 2000m engagements(how to set spread angle so that each torpedo hit the same point?

Big thx. I hope this helps me with my accuracy and perhaps it would help others too.

1. I'm usually stopped... but not always. Sometimes creeping along. Why? Stealth mostly; and I guess the fact that I'm usually lining up as close to a 90 shot as possible and closing to 700-1500M range is usually complete before I launch.

2. Yes, open them. Why? 3 second door open delay causes your fish to miss or hit astern.

3. What tick mark?

4. Spread angle always to the right? Sounds like you got some TDC issues...

Spread for a 2000m shot? Depends, are looking for them all to hit? If so, small angle maybe 1-2 degrees? I don't usually take shots at that distance. But if I did I'd assume at least 1 of the 3 would miss, so I'd probably go with a higher spread of 3-5 to improve my chances for at least one hit.

How do you get all three fish to hit the same spot? You'd lock on target and launch 3 individually but rapidly. If they all run true, they won't all hit at the same time, but they should hit very close to the same spot. You don't have to lock on target, you could also manually aim at a particular spot for all 3 shots.

Thx the tick mark i was referring is the one on the periscope screen not on tdc.

So you could fire torpedoes and hit targets while moving underwater say 6 knots? Doesn't his compromise accuracy as the tdc not able to take into account your speed(It always assume that you're stopping)?

The tick mark in the periscope view is a hint to the optimum firing angle.

Red - Bad shot very high chance in missing (100%)
Orange - Still a bad shot to make but a lower chance of hit (75% to 100% chance in missing)
Yellow - the odds are better here with a greater chance of hitting (0% to 50% chance in missing)
Green - Fire that torpedo for best results! (0% to 10% chance missing)

Remember the more acute angle of the launch the more chance an impact torpedo will miss or not detonate.

I have fired torpedos at a speed of 20 knots and still achieved a hit. I was racing after a tanker that had taken two hits but didn't want to go down. I pulled up almost parallel to it and waited for his zig to zag and give me a perfect broadside. I was close, so I didn't have much chance of missing (unless it was a dud).

I normally am sitting still. I get in front of the ship/convey and wait for them to come in. Like aaronblood said, this is just for stealth reasons. I usually am going at slow speed if it is bad weather and I need to maintain my depth.

You can fire accurately at any speed. HOWEVER!!! If you use manual targeting, this will lead to two things:

a) You will NOT be able to get an accurate speed estimation, which is allright if you already know the accurate speed, you can input that directly into the TDC.

b)BY the time you are ready to fire (estimating range, Angle on Bow and speed) you would have closed some distance to the enemy ship, therefore your range approximation is wrong. Which is, once again, okay if you are at a point blank range.

Having said that, I do not exceed 3 knots when firing, anyway. Of course, none of this is the issue when using automatic targeting http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

Try the manual targeting. practice a bit in the academy. It's like that car commercial, one you'r into it, you are REALLY into it. Addicting cause of the challenge

I always play at 100% realism.

yes with manual targeting the sub should be at full stop to get an accurate plot. No not that triangle mark(green, yellow, red) but the tick mark which we need to click in order to send the plotting information to the tdc prior to the final launching of the torpedoes.

Of course, you have to send the last info you have to the torpedo before shooting.

But do you have to send it for each tube you're going to fire (not in salvo)?

No... you don't even have to send it for each ship you're going to fire at, provided their all on same course and approx the same distance (ie. a straight line formation).

...But I do anyway, cause I don't want to take any chances. THe manual says the TDC automatically updates the AoB of ships in a convoy, but it does not reflect it on the notepad. So once again, just in case i do it manually for every ship. Doesn't take that long, really

The notepad?

I don't use or pay any attention to the notepad. Actually, it's just an irritating useless waste of screen space to me. I just move dials on the TDC.

I hope they've scrapped the notepad in SHIV. I'm very pleased to hear they fixed the stadimeter for SHIV, might actually be usable now!

My standard attack is to position myself at 700-1500m abeam of the target's anticipated path and I calibrate the TDC using fast 90. Since I'm not setting the TDC with a specific ship AoB I'm not introducing too much error into the calculation with my poor AoB estimates. I let the TDC calculate the proper angles for me.

When I'm lining up shots to hit tandem targets I'm usually trying to time my attack for close to simultaneous impact, in which case I launch acquire new target, launch again. I shoot at the more distant target first, sometimes counting to 5 or 10 and then launch at the closer target. I can usually time it for impact with both targets within 3 to 5 seconds. It's really cool when I get it just right and both ships light up at nearly the same time.

I just don't see any point in recalibrating the TDC. But if that works for you...

After my initial attack, I usually set target speed to zero on the TDC and then I know any shots I take after that I'm leading the target manually. But since the target is usually damaged or sinking at that point the speed is near zero anyway.

clicking the tick mark on the notepad before or after opening torpedo tubes?

Aaronblood i'm a moron when it comes to manually setting the tdc. so i use the proper long procedural way. Accuracy not bad though up to about 3000m. There's no target which i decide to engage that i've not hit(not sunk http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif).

What about spread angle? What values should i set it to? I set it to 3 degrees and the second topedo hit the target late(the point after/astern the first torpedo hit).

I'm pretty sure the spread shoots out on both sides of the vertical line on the periscope. For me, most of my 2-spreads I set to 2 degrees. This way, if I miss the engine room a bit, at least one of them will hit it.
Just as an estimate, look at the ship through the periscope. Now, if you set 2 degree spread, that means the torpedoes will impact the ship roughly where the 1-degree lines are on the periscope.
Therefore, if you are too close, spread it out a bit more, or the torps will hit the same spot. Also, remember that torpedoes are not launched simultaneously. The delay between firing will let the ship move a bit, so it will seem like the second torp is always too far to the stern. Just live with it...
