Noob Question. Help with splitscreen.

Ok I recently bought the 360 and RS: Vegas to go with it. I only bought the core 360 system so it doesnt have any kind of memory or saving capabilities yet. I have tried to play split screen coop with my brother but it says I need to sign in with a profile and I can't create a profile because I don't have something to save it to. I'm guessing its a requirement to play split screen but I'm hoping it isnt, which is why I'm asking here. Please tell me I dont have to shell out the 40ish dollars to play split screen..

BTW I searched for this topic but I couldnt find anything..I dunno maybe I'm blind.

40-ish dollars? You don't need an XBL gold account to play split-screen.
