I'm looking for two things:

A decent WW2 tank sim

A decent strategy game, like Age of empires.

Are there any others worth looking at besides Steel Fury and T34 vs Tiger? I have RO already.

Is Medieval TW 2 worth a buy? I can get it for a fiver in Game.

I'm just looking for a game with a lot of depth to keep me involved for hours at a time.

Thanks guys. Grateful for any recommendations.

For Strategy I recommend

Company Of Heroes (incredibly addictive)

Supreme Commander 1

Napoleon Total War (better than Empires by a good margin)

If you get any one of those, get Company of Heroes. It's simply sublime.

In terms of tank battles Theatre of War Kursk has got a good rap I think but i have not personally played it http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

My favorite strategy game these days is actually the space based "Sins of a Solar Empire" :

I can't give Company of Heroes the same endorsement as Airmail. A friend of mine really likes it so I have the original and Opposing Fronts. They are enjoyable, but I have always found the idea that I have to build a certain building to get a halftrack, or another building to get a Sherman to be silly. The damage models can also be very frustrating as there is no realism to it. You destroy things by accumulating hit points, so you may be shooting a jeep with a tank 3 or 4 times to kill it. And a jeep can kill a tank by using its machine gun. It will take the jeep a long time to destroy a tank, but it is possible. That said, the AI can be amazingly tough to defeat.

I used to play the V for Victory series games. I think you can download some of them for free now. The Stalingrad game was punishingly long. You can win, but you feel like you really are playing as the Russian commander as even when you get the Germans surounded you just can't kill them off. You pound on them relentlessly and they just barely seem to give an inch.

You can control logistics, artillery, air power, command structure, etc. In the big battles you have to control hundreds of units every turn. There are just tons of things to manage and you will screw up and lose units due to inept command and logisitics.

Yeah I'd also recommend Company of Heroes. It's a bit cartoony and unrealistic but you get to control a wide variety of units from infantry to tanks. Very addicting to play skirmishes against the computer, playing against humans is fun too but very stressful because a lot of people are very sneaky and good. Other than that I haven't really seen any RTS games I really liked a lot.

I checked out CoH but it looks a little too arcadey. I don't know about that one yet.

Theatre Of War Kursk looks really great, just what I'm looking for, but the system reqs are a bit high in the processor dept.

I see there's a Theatre Of War Afrika, might check that out, the specs are a bit lower.

That style of play looks really immmersive and strategic.

If you get a Total War game and dont mind watching a few years old graphics, get the Rome Total War. By far best of the series, imho, especially with the Barbarian invasion add-on and some mods... Some of them are really good.

Ditto.

Rome TW with a good mod, graphics way ahead of 'out of the box' - lots to choose from.

Roma Surrectum 2 is due out soon, Rome Total Realism and SPQR are good as is our very own Dux-enhanced Europa Barbororum. I like Viking Invasion 2 and Arthurian TW, too.

Take a look and prepare to get confused at what's on offer here. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-wink.gif

MTW2 is worth a fiver - same link will lead to what's on offer mod wise - check out Stainless Steel, Broken Crescent, Deus Lo Vault. And the Russian one for top notch graphics.

Edit: Like Il2, make sure you get the latest expansions to ensure optimal mod goodness. Barbarian Invasion & Alexander for Rome, Kingdoms for Medieval II. Should be an 'idiot's guide' via TW Centre link. Worth reading up for a few minutes over there.

Steel Fury is probably the best WWII tank simulator available. If I heard right someone is doing a Citadel mod for it.

Tactical RTS you should look at the Achtung Panzer karkhov game, about the 6th Pz div late winter 42/43. It's inexpensive too. I've both the Kursk 1943 and this one and of the two AP is definately the superior although the graphics are less polished.

Thanks guys!

Went out and bought the Rome:TW Gold collection, and the original Theatre Of War game, which covers 1039-1945 campaigns, and my system is more than capable of handling it!

None of my local shops had Steel Fury, unsurprisingly. I'll check Amazon.

I also bought BFBC2 for my PS3. I was involved in the beta and enjoyed it, so looks promising.

I really enjoyed Medieval 2 Total War.In many respects I think it was the best of a pretty good bunch...
