Hi, everyone !

SC is a great game. It has to be if even books have been written based on it.
So I thought that why couldn´t someone make a movie about it too. I think it isn´t an impossible idea because you have perhaps seen a few films based on videogames (Tomb Raider,Resident Evil etc.).
You just have to make a few more twists in the plot/story and take it more away from Sam´s one man show. I think it could work!

What do you think, please reply. It would be nice if we could take this discussion even further and start to talk about who would play Sam Fisher (would it be Micheal Ironside, or someone else), Lambert (Dennis Haysbert, perhaps) the choice is yours!

(I hope you understand my English, i am from Scandinavia so English isn´t my mother tongue)

I've heard rumor after rumor so who really knows. IMDB doesn't show anything and Google doesn't really lead me anywhere so who knows. I would like to see one as well.

It's stuck in development hell.

The problem is three fold:

1) Video game movies rarely do well.

This is what is holding up Halo -- Aside from the fact Bill Gates & MS were being completely unrealistic in their stipulations regarding the movie and its actual production (I won't go into detail; suffice to say GREED was the big motivating factor. It takes a lot to make Hollywood mad at you, but if Bill did then you know he must have gone too far).

Even though Halo has a huge following it is still a movie based on a video game and right now Hollywood would rather go for the other niche audience of teen-to-20something males... The comic book fans.

And comic books are more universal in appeal in a lot of aspects compared to video game properties. They have to be because they were successful comic books in the first place.

2) The world we live in has changed radically.

In the next six to eight months you're going to see a ton of War on Terror/War in the Middle East movies being released by Hollywood.

-The Kingdom
-In the Valley of Elah
-Rendition
-Lions for Lambs

These are just some of the major titles coming in the last quarter of 2007, early 2008. There are more, but some are in production now and or are smaller releases.

People (the general public) don't want to see an NSA/CIA operative doing the things Sam does in the games. They don't.

Yes, the morality is Sam is supposedly doing good things and protecting America's freedom... But in right now a lot of people, including Americans, feel we've gone dangerously too far with what we are doing to ensure our freedom.

The whole "Fifth Freedom" element the game uses as its core concept is a very real concept that exists today. But in a negative way. It will be associated with The Patriot Act, illegal wire tapping, no internet privacy, fewer and fewer civil liberties, etc. All of which have taken place under the current administration pre and post-9/11.

I have a feeling this is part of the reason why UBISoft jumped on the Jason Bourne/Conviction story line for the next SC game.

It is devoid of any politics -- right, or wrong.

It is a more universal (a.k.a. less controversial) story about a fugitive on the run from a secret government organization he (Sam) used to work for. With Lambert supposedly dead, I am sure Third Echelon is now going to be a rouge element of the U.S. government who is doing illegal things like killing U.S. citizens and other acts we accuse dictators and other "uncivilized" countries of doing.

Mind you, this is all speculation, but if judging by the current zeitgeist of the world, I'm not too far off the mark most likely.

3) Because the world has changed radically people don't want black-and-white action heroes any more. They come off as childish and unrealistic (relative term!).

This is one of the main problems the SC games have in my opinion.

Even as a fan of the series, most of the characters aren't well developed enough for a feature film. Not one that would do well in 2007.

Sam isn't that conflicted most of the time -- In the game; I haven't read the books. He's told to do something and he does it. He doesn't question orders.

This just will not be believable in world where everything is so gray you don't know who the good guys and bad guys really are.

Now, maybe "Fallout" addresses this, but I doubt it as the plot is fairly typical "USA is good, terrorists are bad. Let's go get'em!" throughline that just won't resonate with audiences right now.

These are probably some of the main reasons Dreamworks has shelved the project. And in all honesty I think they are right to do it for now.

In the next five to eight years if things have changed maybe Sam Fisher can make a big screen debut. But unless the real world becomes less complex (not likely!), OR until Sam Fisher and SC becomes more complex than Tom Clancy's "might makes right" theme I personally don't think we are going to see a SC movie any time soon.

That "teaser" was on the Chaos Theory game disc. I don't think Paramount even has rights to it anymore. I'll see if I can get Jackie in here to explain it again.

KungFu said a whole lot up there, but it was all opinion and has nothing to do with this particular movie. I will sum it up by telling everyone what my contacts at Rubicon told me....

It's something that they want to do but the project is halted right now, but not by Dreamworks. I dunno where that came from. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-indifferent.gif

Now onto MadamTampini's post...

The film was originally going to be made by Paramount, then it was shifted to DreamWorks SKG (Speilbergs company for those who don't know). Then Paramount purchased Dreamworks SKG, so it's kind of in limbo. I don't know for sure but I think that whole thing may be why the project is not being allowed to move forward.

What I said has everything to do with this movie, or rather the kind of movie SC might or might not turn out to be.

Everything I said was very relevant if you look into the decision process of how mainstream (studio) movies are made, or not made...

That was relevant to how things are done...in general. However, my own connections to Rubicon tell me that nothing you said applies to this particular situation. As a matter of fact some of it was outright wrong.

A lot of people assume everything they see here is official because the connection between Ubi and Rubi are not understood. I want to make sure that hearsay is not taken as fact and peeople are not mislead.
