Ok, long story short, just made it through a nasty battle with 4 destroyers and my sub's now sat dead in the water with no engines, submerged or surfaced. 2/4 of the diesel and 2/4 of the electric engines are red on the damage control screens, with the small red bar next to them maxed out full, but the damage team don't have them on the "repair order" list. I've accelerated time ahead a few days, but still no joy. Is my only option to send the boat to the bottom (which seems silly) ?

Do you have Silent Running active. If so no repairs will take place. Also is your Damage Control team actually active?

No, silent running isn't active and the repair team status is "standing watch/maintenance". I've tried going to battle stations for a while to see if that speeded things up but it was of no use. The manual also says to drag the damaged items to the repair queue, and whilst the engines are draggable, as soon as I release the mouse over the list box, they jump back to thier original place in the ships systems. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-sad.gif

If they have maxed out red-bars they are destroyed. No repair possible at sea.

Thanks for that, Lane! Now I understand how to repair things more effectively. Cheers and good hunting, Cap'n!

If your engines are destroyed, is there any way to call for help? What about if you're out of fuel? Can you get a tug to bring you back to base (with a massive renown loss, of course!)

No AAA tow trucks in game. I wish. Lost my rudder about halfway to Midway. I believe the sub is drifting past Pt Barrow Alaska about now.

So, basically my only option is to radio base with my kills, and then sink the boat? Blimey! Seems a bit extreme eh http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/35.gif

No calls for help?? WTF?? Even in Silent Hunter 1 you could use that option as a last resort! http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

Continuously going to periscope depth, surfacing, over and over and over again will give you some forward motion, so you can use that to go to the nearest area for refit.
If you're that desparate, that is.
Otherwise, there seems to be no other way to do it.

Another issue for v1.3 perchance?

I'm no expert in Diesel-Electric mechanics; however, I'm pretty sure that all US subs from the Porpoise class onward were Diesel-Electric with no direct linkage between the diesel engines and the propellers.
Theoretically, as long as you have the electric motors it shouldn't matter how many diesels are damaged as long as at least 1 or 2 are still functioning. I know one time I a diesel engine damaged in a Gato or Balao boat, and I could actually run faster submerged than on the surface because on the surface the game would only turn one screw, but both ran underwater.

it happened to me with a S-18 or whatever class sub that some *****ing bombers landed some DC's and both engines were damaged but the red bar wasn't full so it could be repaired.... but the stupid team woudnt do a ****, even that i had SR off and the team was active and all had full or near complete fatigue. i sat there for like 2 days and during night time a juicy convoy came through my pos but somewaht far so i wanted to end my affair so i shot a couple of roudns wit my dek gun to the horizon and see if maybe i could attract some DDs and it actually worked, 2 DDs came (jap ofc) and i shot them sinking one heavely damaging the other but the damaged one pressed forward and rammed me sending ,e to the bottom which i coudnt recover since my sub was swiss cheese with many holes... amazingly i reached 1,254 feet before imploding... very cool! http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

The only thing that seems odd is you still have 2 of your diesels and at least one elctric motor. Are you saying you can't move at all, or just not very fast? If you have even one diesel to produce electricity, and one working motor to turn a prop, you should be able to sail.

No I can't move at all. 2 of the 4 diesel and 2 of the 4 electric engines are trashed. If I click on each of the propulsion boxes on the left hand side of the damage control screen, the port side has 1 ok and 1 broken engine and the starboard side also has 1 ok and one broken engine. It's exactly the same for the electric engines. Anyhow the upshot of it is, I reloaded a save I made just before I engaged the convoy where I got so heavily damaged, sunk everything and then with my engines still intact, sailed back to Brisbane (my base) only to encounter the "changing base without telling the player" bug. So I THEN sailed on to Fremantle where I was mothballed after sinking 80k tons worth of shipping http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/sadeyes.gif
I've started a new campaign...... *sniff*
