Guys, I've almost finished this skin, which I'll post up in the next couple of days. I'll put it up in the RAF Roundel version, a USAAF insignia version and a blank, as well as one of the RAF units flying from England.....anyway.. just one question.
On the P-47 at the base of the wing, there is a red square with the word 'step' written on it. At the moment I have this painted grey, but can anyone advise me if they would have expected it to stay red. The reason I ask is that the red stands out very much against the grey and would, I would have thought been a bit stupid to keep red. Anyway, advice would be appreciated, otherwise it stays grey!
Cheers, Neil.

The Red Step area was applied at the factory. There seems to have been two different shades of Red (Red and Red-Orange) used which I presume is because of the different factories used to produce the P-47. For example, P-47D-1-RE (Farmingdale) and P-47D-2-RA (Evansville).
To date, I have only seen the Red version.

I have checked my references and did see one color pic that showed the red square still there and this was a bubbletop, bare metal version. In several other photographs, it's visiable if you look hard enough. But also I see some planes where they have beeen painted out too.

I think I found one where it appears to have a portion of the red square painted out to just show an "L" like you see on the Mustangs.
A good source, is Rodger Freemans book, American Eagles series "P-47 Thunderbolts Units of the Eigth Air Force" from Classic Colors. Hope this helps! http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/25.gif
