I've just been given URU as a present but my systems aren't up to it. I'm not good on technology - I just switch it on and hope it works. Please could I ask some very basic questions.

I know I need to upgrade my RAM but what do I need to get. I see SIMM, DIMM and RIMM and it doesn't mean a thing to me.

Also, I need to upgrade my Graphics Card. Will any GeForce card do? - thinking of getting a second hand one from E-bay - or will I have compatability problems with any of them.

I'm attaching the DxDiag for info. Any help gratefully recieved.

I can't help you with the memory because I don't know your system. It's either SIMM or DIMM since RIMM is Intel only.

You're ok with a GeForce II, 3, 4 or 5 as long as they're not MX and they're sufficiently 'advanced'. That comment really relates to the 4s and 5s. If you can get a Ti4600 second-hand you'll be able to see URU in all its glory. I suggest you use that as a reference point.

Thanks. I'll see what I can get for the graphics card.

Could I tell by physically looking at the current RAM if it is DIMM or SIMM. I don't even know what this means.

Thanks for your help.

If your PC's serial number is 005759520079, you have a Packard Bell I-MEDIA 6300 (http://support.packardbell.com/uk/mypc/index.php?sernr=005759520079). The motherboard specifications (http://support.packardbell.com/uk/mypc/index.php?PibItemNr=spec_florida&PibItemParent=005759520079#show) show that this machine uses 3.3 volt 168-pin unbuffered SDRAM DIMM's (100 or 133 MHz). If you add memory, the specs of the added memory stick must be equal to or better than the existing. Same comment if you replace existing memory sticks. You ought to aim for at least 512 MB of RAM, total.

Beyond that, if you're not familiar with upgrading memory, I'd suggest taking your PC to a computer store or getting help from somone who has the appropriate experience.

If you really want to do-it-yourself, the manual for your motherboard can be downloaded from here (http://www.msi.com.tw/program/support/manual/mnu/spt_mnu_detail.php?UID=23). (It downloads as a self-extracting executable containing the manual as a .pdf file, so you'll need Adobe Acrobat Reader (http://www.adobe.com/products/acrobat/readstep2.html) to read it.) It has a reasonably good explanation of memory installation starting on page 2.4. Be certain to touch something grounded before taking the new RAM out of its anti-static bag, to avoid damage due to static electricity.

As a side comment, IMHO and with any due respect to Squire Gates, Windows Millenium (which you have) has got to be the worst operating system ever! You might want to consider upgrading to, preferably, Win XP Professional. If you don't upgrade, at least be certain to use the Windows Update service (http://v4.windowsupdate.microsoft.com/en/default.asp) to install all available Win Me hot fix and security bulletin updates.

I second Heimdall's opinion on Windows ME. I don't know what you'd get from XP Pro that you don't from XP Home (you can look up that one before you make a decision), but XP is definitely recommended.

Win XP Pro is a more capable version of the operating system than is Win XP Home Edition, particularly in the area of networking. Folks who have installed Home and later found they needed the added capabilities of Pro discovered to their dismay that Home can NOT be upgraded to Pro!

So, I recommend Win XP Pro as the upgrade.

Hmmm....interesting that you comment "as long as they're not MX".

I currently have Geforce2 MX/MX 400, 56.64 drivers, Win98SE, AMD Athlon 800 MHz, 512 ram and DirectX 9.0b. Display set at 32 bits. Bare minimum running at startup. No spyware or virus's.

Uru plays fine sometimes and a little irratic at other times,

The older drivers are smoother, but the 56.64 drivers have better graphics.

So my question is, if the MX series doesn't work as well, what would be the better GeForce2. I see your reference about this being toward 4s and 5s. Can I download a better GeForce2 or does that require a new card? Is what I have the best I can do at this point without investing?

If I need to post a dx report, how do I do this also?

Mr Zebe D
06-13-2004, 03:33 PM
deanst, you've taught me something. I didn't know there was a 2 MX. I can't say I've come across a 3 MX, but I won't say categorically that there isn't one.

I think your drivers are too recent for your card and O/S. Can you try 52.16? That's the version you'd get automatically if you were running XP.

MX were made as cut-down budget versions of the hardware. Non-MX are physically different cards.

I'm a fan of 98SE, since it will handle both DOS and non-DOS. I wouldn't push it too far though. As I understand it, it can't handle more than 512 Mb RAM on the motherboard, for example.

If you upgrade your card, look for a Ti4600 at most.

dxdiag instructions are here (http://forums.ubi.com/eve/forums?a=tpc&s=400102&f=524109302&m=937105842&r=937105842#937105842) if you need them (scroll down). Also, if you do post the report, please start your own separate thread.

Are you saying that the 52.16 drivers will work on my Win98SE(see my post above). I see on the Nvidia site that those are for WinXP/2000.

The Win98SE version I had before the 56.64 was 45.23. Haven't tried the 53.0.

Well...I didn't really have any major problems with the 45.23 drivers, it's just that the graphics are better with the 56.64 drivers. Noticably more defined.

What I have observed is that playing Uru, without XP1 installed, it runs just fine. After installing XP1, I find that, when launching Uru, when Relto is loaded I get a stuttering kind of effect at first. There are also other areas that seem to sort of bog down. I stop playing and wait a few seconds for Uru to 'catch up' so to speak.

I've installed, reinstalled several times, deleting the directory and registry entries, with the same type of results repeating.

The main reason I kept reinstalling was to try to find an install where it would be daylight in the Lava age(?). When I found that one, Ages Beyond Myst and XP1 played perfectly. I made a backup of my sav file after completing thinking that might be an advantage when POTS comes out since it played so well with that particular install. However, after that, I deleted the sav file from the install directory and found that starting a 'new' game without reinstalling would sometimes play okay and other times it would be sluggish.

The thing about properly uninstalling drivers and installing different versions is that Uru doesn't recognize the new drivers. It says something like "unable to recognize graphics" and "using default settings".

I don't mind trying different drivers at this point and reinstalling. I also tried the the latest Omega drivers for Win98SE, but they were worse.

Mr Zebe D
06-14-2004, 04:36 PM
deanst, I've looked at the nvidia drivers and archives on their website.

I'm surprised that there's no 52.16 for 98SE, but 53.04 is the next one after 45.23. XP doesn't like 53.04. (In fact 53.03 was released originally and was only there for a day or so). If you use Windows Update you get taken back to 52.16. [That's for a GeForce 4 card. The latest drivers for a GeForce 5 card are fine].

I think you'll always have problems with stutter because of your particular card. You could look at using msconfig to turn other processes off, which will allocate more resources to the game, but I don't know how much difference that'll make.

The lava age is Eder Kira.

URU always behaves that way with new drivers. You just have to know to go back and reset your chosen configuration.

I'm not surprised that Omega drivers were worse. As far as I knew, they were designed for Radeon cards, like the Catalyst drivers.

Can you try both msconfig and 53.04?

Yep...I'll try the 53.04 and let you know how that went. When you talk about "reset your configuration", I assuming changing drivers doesn't mean you need to reinstall Uru. Just need to reset the in-game grahics and sound settings.

As far as msconfig, the only things I have running are Norton AV, ScriptBlocking(a part of Norton AV, Kerio firewall, SystemTray, ScanRegistry and RBTray(a small utility that allows minimizing program windows to the tray, uses no noticable resources).

Anyway, thanks for spending some time with me. I really appreciate it. I'll run the 53.04 drivers for a couple of days to see how they work.

Thanks again. http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

I have to admit that you have lost me with some of this information - but I don't think it all applies to me.

Since I posted the first question my 'other half' has come across a clearance computer and since we are having other problems with this one we are considering investing in it.

It has 60G hard drive
Pentium 4 2.5 GHz processor
512 RAM DDR
64 GeForce 4 Graphics card
Runs windows XP (Don't know which version - probably home knowing supplier)

Would this do the job? It seems pointless to buy this and still not be able to run URU.

Thanks for your help.

Hello, Catherine. We need more information about the pc's graphics and sound cards. There is a whole family of GeForce 4 cards, some of which work and some of which don't. Is it an MX? Is it a Ti4200? Ti4600?

The game is designed to work best with Creative Labs soundblaster Live (but not value) and Audigy cards. If the computer doesn't have a soundcard at all, AC97 compliant sound will be produced on the motherboard. Whilst you will be able to play URU with sound you won't get all of the features. [You could of course add a soundcard at a later date and turn the sound off on the motherboard]. What exactly produces the sound in this case?

OK - There's no sound card in the computer but I'm not too worried about that as long as it plays the sound. The graphics is a 64mg NVidia GeForce 4 MX440SE. The MX's aren't good are they?

Would an ATI Radeon 9200 128mg be better? That's what's on the next computer up in the range. They're Advents by the way.

Thanks

Sound is provided by Avance AC'97

Mr Zebe D
06-15-2004, 10:56 AM
Catherine, I'd be straying outside my area of expertise if I gave you specific advice on Radeon cards, but I have a feeling that that particular model is a nightmare to get to run URU properly. You'll have to wait for Heimdall on that one.

Avance AC'97 is the sound chipset on the motherboard. You will have sound, but when you set it up on the game's audio tab you need to remember not to turn the EAX effects on. They only apply to Creative Labs cards.

PS This is Heimdall's definitive comment on the MX440 from another thread -

Your Uru problem is most likely due to your video card and/or drivers. Depending on how the motherboard is set up, an NVIDIA GeForce 4 MX 440 video card may - or may not - work with Uru. Many folks have had many Uru problems with the MX440, especially when running Win XP Home Edition.

Catherine,

The Advent can be a good value depending on price (compared to other machines of the same specs), warranty (how long, from whom, and what's covered), and whether it has the expansion slots (AGP slot and at least two PCI slots) to be upgradeable. If it's a laptop, don't buy it!

Having the latest Avance drivers installed is best. However, from the Avance website (http://www.avance.com/):

"Avance Logic, Inc. is located in San Jose, California. As of December 1st, 2002, the company will be engaged in a totally new business.

Avance's previous business in providing ICs and related services will be transferred to Realtek Semiconductor Corp. For any inquiries on services and support for those IC products, please click here (http://www.realtek.com.tw/pctech/pc-drivers1-1.aspx?lineid=5&famid=12&series=8&Software=True)"

Avance drivers can be found:
-- a. On Realtek's Computer Peripheral & Multimedia ICs driver page (http://www.realtek.com.tw/downloads/downloads1-1.aspx?lineid=8), if you know the Avance chipset version. (A Dxdiag report will sometimes contain that info.)
-- b. On the Soundcard-Drivers.com website's Avance page (http://www.soundcard-drivers.com/companies/139.htm), if you know the Avance chipset version.
-- b. On the PC manufacturer's website, if you know the PC's model and/or serial number.
-- c. On the motherboard manufacturer's website, if you know the motherboard's model and/or serial number.

With an Avance chipset, both the 'Enable EAX effects' and the 'Hardware acceleration' boxes on the Uru Setup menu's Audio tab should be unchecked for normal game play. This has a good chance of giving you trouble-free sound with Uru.

I'd recommend installing a Sound Blaster sound card, Audigy series being my preference, and disabling the Avance chipset in the system BIOS.

What Mr Zebe D quoted me as saying about GeForce 4 MX 440 video cards still applies. My recommendation is to avoid 'em or replace 'em! Also, in general, any video card with an 'SE' or 'LE' in the name should be avoided, since these cards typically have features disabled to make them cheaper.

The Radeon 9200 video card will sometimes run Uru 'right out of the box' with no problems. Otherwise, a 9200 can be made to work with Uru, but it takes effort. That is, the right combination of drivers and Uru graphics settings must be found by trial and error. Trying several driver versions, including the Omega drivers, is often required.

Windows XP Home Edition is undoubtedly what will be installed on an Advent. Seems that the majority of video card problems posted in this forum have been with PC's running Win XP Home....

While I'm thinking of it, a comment on Omega drivers and NVIDIA video cards. The Omega site states that "THESE DRIVERS ARE COMPATIBLE WITH ALL NVIDIA CARDS THAT USE DETONATOR DRIVERS...." That is, the Omega NVIDIA drivers are apparently based on the Detonator series.

NVIDIA released their ForceWare/Unified Driver Architecture driver series in October 2003, and thereby superseded the Detonator series. The final Detonator releases were version 45.23 for Win 98 and 45.33 for Win XP. The first ForceWare releases were version 53.04 for Win 98 and 52.16 for Win XP.

So, the latest NVIDIA cards may not be properly supported by the Omega drivers. I'd say that Omega drivers shouldn't be expected to work well (or at all) with any card best supported by an NVIDIA driver version later than 45.23/45.33. The only qualifier is that Omega drivers can allow laptop video chipsets, no matter of what vintage, to work well with Uru when nothing else will.
