Can anyone give me some pointers on how to destroy the buildings faster? On the missions where I have to destroy more than half of them, I seem to be unable to even get one down in the time it gives me. Gunships just get shot down and tanks seem useless. Arty isn't even available for me to deploy. What am I doing wrong here?

Tanks are the main tools of attackers on raids, engineers garrisoned nearby the building can take out the building effectively while being hard to uproot by the enemy. Gunships will do decent damage to it once you take out the drones arround it with other units.
Also be aware of what type of building you are attacking, if you hover the cursor over a target building it will say the type, their are light, standard and fortified buildings with respective ammounts of HP, if you can't take out a fortified move on to a weaker one.
Artillery is not allowed in raids.

You've gotta use your best assets as wisely as you can. Since I can't use my awesome artillery on most of these types of missions I'll try to rely on my tanks and gunships.
Luckily, with a well timed missile barrage, two or three of your gunships can take down a light target very quickly. Given that you have that upgrade for your gunships. Even without the barrage gunships work very well against lighter targets. For heavier targets I find that Tanks and engineers will take out buildings the quickest, without your artillery of course. Usually in these specific missions you find that you only need to destroy half of these specified targets. So I find destroying the lighter targets on the perimeter can be swift and confusing to the enemy as I am already en route to my next target if not attacking it already by the time I have take out the first.
I also try to secure at least one or two nodes in the making. It is a little difficult to pull off. However; by either distracting your enemy to pull his forces away to attack the nodes and NOT, i repeat NOT, defending the critical strike points gives you a glorious window of opportunity.
I find that defending is much harder then attacking. You are going to lose some buildings. So you must make critical decisions before you can even deploy many units. You always end up late to the battlefield and you are at a 3 to 1 ratio of enemies to friendlies. So in defending remember to SHUT OFF any route the most difficult targets to bring down, and defend it to the LAST MAN.
This is just a couple examples of how to possibly help yourself. You must be swift, and deadly in your efforts to advance or defend our fronts. On the battlefield there are many mental battles won and lost. To help ensure you dominate you opponent you must always be on the winning side of these battles. Know what your weaknesses are, and exploit any the enemy shows to you.

Many thanks to you both for your tips. These were giving me headaches as I could not figure out what to attack them with. My APC's got decimated on the approach due to all the drones arround the first building I tried to go after. The enemy engineers proved quite tough too. I seem to only get two slots available at the outset so I guess I will make one a tank and the other a gunship for OTHT.
