German to English translation from the German instruction manual:

To run the game, the Steam service is needed. Please make
Sure Steam is installed and before the execution of Cliffs of Dover
started.

That summarises that Steam is needed to run the game.

If steam is a requirement as per the instruction manual, then retail will activate on Steam which is great news.

Probably the best way to describe it is Itunes for pc games.

Hell, that's not good news, that's the worse news for those of us that don't want steam. I was hoping kleaneasy was right about not needing steam to activate and play exclusively offline.
Why should anyone have to install steam if they only want to play offline? That's just wrong IMO. Back to not getting the game again. Oh well....

And why are people worried about the retail version not using steam for online play? All you have to do in that case is just buy and download the steam version!! What does it matter if you have the DVD or not??

Does than mean that you cant play it offline?

It means you can't run it without running Steam, but Steam can run in offline mode so you don't need to be online to play single.

Actually the new UBI requirement it be "epilepsy proof in case a random epileptic walks past and looks over your shoulder" which apparently disables SLI, potentially removes features like gun flashes and trashes frame rates and increases hardware requirements substantially is a more valid reason to not bother to be honest.
