Let's say I render a movie in avi and render that same movie in mpeg4. If you look at the contrast in both movies, it looks the same. However when compressed to divx, both movies become very different for the amount of contrast (avi to divx has way more contrast than mpeg4 to divx). Is this normal? If not, how do I fix it

No idea TheAll_in.
Compression problems seem to haunt us forever! I know what works from trial and error and experiments with colleagues and tend to stick to it. I now use uncompressed avi for all editing work and only compress with divx at the very end.
Doesn't answer your question, sorry.

MMMmmmm.. Not sure on a cure although I can give you another take on things. As for normal.. Hell everythings normal on a PC.. isn't it?!!
Before jumping to the conclusion that there is a difference in movie just because its compressed with DivX doesn't cover all the bases.
Using codecs for compression in the simplest sense should not alter the settings of anything unless its told to do so. However what may happen is the decompression part of the codec may have different playback settings. In essence the movie is fine it just looks different when you play it back.
I dont use DivX and its been a while since I looked at the settings you should be able to find them through the program menu or via your media player file properties.
This could be an reason and then obviously the answer would be to change the settings.
How do you compress and do you use VirtualDub?
