In my steadfast defence and sticking up for all things British ( which I seem to have done in recent posts in the forum ) It has just hit me how far the temperature of my blood increases when I read criticism of My country's war record / history...

I know how annoying and boring some people can be when they get onto politics... hope Im not sliding in that direction! http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-surprised.gif

You shouldn't wind yourself up so much, being patiotic is ok, for the right reasons, but you'll find no matter which country you're in, there will be some past history where someone have blotted the squeaky clean records.
...and the public disbelief when these horror stories are uncovered.

I have similar angst when discussing the Holocaust period of German history. We Allied nations lambasted Germany while at the same time ignoring what was done to the North American Indians. We jumped all over South Africa for apartheid when only forty or so years ago Blacks were made to sit at the back of the bus.

A wish man once said "I love my country, I may not always like it, but I love my country" As a American, ugly American at that, I can understand.

"Patriotism is a virtue of the wicked"
-Oscar Wilde

We must love our people (ie. human beings) before pledging ourselves to something as fragile, as fleeting, as a 'country'... because countries can cease to exist, but humanity never will...

Except when it comes to sport, that is...
(SA vs. Australia... oh, how my heart broke during those tests...)
