At last the agony of export and compression is over. It almost took as long as the film itself!!! In the end, I couldn't prevent some Premiere Elements export problems, http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/compsmash.gif but I'll moan later when someone points it out. Thanks to Damo for getting it down to 25Mb!

Here's my new film "To do and die"
http://67.18.225.155/sachio/Do+Die.avi
(let me know if you're experiencing download problems)

Big Big thank you to 310th Falcon for helping me with the sound effects. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-very-happy.gif I couldn't get proper in-game sounds using FRAPS so without your sound files, this film would have been largely just music.

Thanks for all the people who gave me useful comments for my previous film. It was very useful in making this film. I hope you can see notable improvement in my film quality.

I hope you like the film. Let me know what you think. As always, constructive criticisms are welcome. It is a radical departure in style to other films so I don't expect everyone to like it. Would appreciate it though if you could let me know why you don't like it because that's really useful to me too.

Enjoy.

I see what you mean!
They are actually clouds as was in the original picture (and notice I had to airbrush the huts out!) http://www.diggerhistory.info/images/comic/48.jpg
But then the other 'minor point' comes out: the American pilots in my film are wearing German Luftwaffe outfits! I like to refer to that as 'artistic licence' http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-wink.gif

Hi snatchio,

I liked the comic strip idea here, very original and artistic. Good story and sound track, and nice work on the cartoon stills with the voice bubbles http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/clap.gif did you create these?

Also liked the Batman style KAPOWS and BOOMS etc very entertaining and again original for this type of movie http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_cool.gif

Thought your final shot was excellent even though it was from a static camera, loved the way more and more planes flew over and their casting shadows on the carrier looked great in black and white.

Overall very entertaining and that‚‚ā¨ôs what these movies should be so you did a good job there http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/25.gif

You going for another artistic style with your next one?

Snatchio,

This is one great movie! Very unique and nice way to show the art of movie making. Like the story and how you set it out looked like it came from an old comic book WW2.

Seems that you work in the advertising and/or graphics arts area, if not you have the touch.

Keep up the great work though I was hoping to see your two daughters fight again in the air!

http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/25.gif http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/25.gif I give it two thumbs up!

Most unique movie in at least a year! I loved it! VERY creative and lots of fun....reminded me of the comics when I was a kid...A LONG time ago, by the way!

This one would win an award in some category, in some contest, if there were a contest. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_rolleyes.gif Ahh, what the heck: I hereby award you an "Oleg" for best Comic Book Movie, thus far, in 2006.

Very well done! Looking forward to your next movie (No break is authorized!)

Thanks for your reviews.
Monty-Dan, these speech bubbles were created by me to hide the original one and add my story to it. I drew it on Flash and blue-screened it so that only the bubbles came up. Same with the KABOOMS. I think this method still has lots of miles in films of other styles.

I'm glad you liked the ending because it took a lot of experiments before I settled on that one. I wanted to avoid saying "rode (or flew) the six hundred" after the "into the valley of death" line. The shadows of the planes over the flight deck was an added bonus that came about after take 27.

NTESLA, thanks for your comments. Alas I am in banking, but probably that's why I feel the need to do something completely different like this. My daughters' involvement in air combat has been very very unpopular with female audiences who think it's just short of child mental abuse. So I'm afraid they will no longer appear unless there's no shooting and killing (and where's the fun in that?!!)

Doolittle81, Flattered with the "Oleg". OK, it sounds like I'm the only contender in the category but it's better than not having it! I'm afraid I'm going to disappoint you, but I will have to take a break from film making. 2 films in 4 months is quite tiring. Plus the warmer weather is around the corner. In England, the Summer comes and goes like Spitfire, and I don't want to miss it while editing films!

Very original, refreshing, and nicely done.

Excellent story, great vision, and sound track. Top notch!!

I too love the comic strip thing with the voice bubbles pop-ups. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-wink.gif

I'm glad the sound effects work for you. I hope the VirtualDub tips help you out...looks like they did.

Snatchio take some time off and enjoy England's summer weather while it lasts, and get back in the studio working on your next film.

Again great movie and should be up for an "Oleg Award". http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

England has summer? http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/blink.gif

Snatchio, was does your daughter do?

As for the movie, twas very good. Only had minor niggles with it, like the high cotrast between black and white which made it hard to discern objects. Also, I think it may have looked better in colour. But I suppose thats up to the individual.

http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/11.gif Excellent job sir ~S~

Most excellent and original Snatchio. Has anybody done a comic book style like this before in an IL2 movie...? I think you're the first.

Very entertaining and well thought out with great music and atmosphere. That last scene was great with all the aircraft heading off into the horizon and the shadows on the deck!

The black and white worked very well in most scenes but there were a few where it was hard to see what was going on. Other than that it was great.

Look forward to your next installment http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/25.gif

Thanks for your reviews. Someone gave me a 3-star which I thought was quite harsh given that I've been given a token "Oleg", but I guess it's a reason to try harder so I'll live with it.

I'm glad you liked it 310th Falcon. As I said, couldn't have done this without your help.

Thanks for your comments Hotel Bushranger and Scragbat. I agree, some scenes were very difficult to see. I had to adjust the contrast with every single scene and it was always a case of being able to see something at the expense of other aspects. For example, the scene where the plane gets shot down by AA and falls in the water, it was too light to see what's going on, but I settled on that because I wanted that fog of war trasition from the previous cannon scene. What I should have done is change the contrast gradually during the scene, but was too lazy to find out how on Virtual Dub.

I agree that colour would have made things clearer. What I wanted to get was the flat cartoon look like some 3D games can do like this http://www.samurainintendo.com/gamecube/automodellista.html but I didn't know how to achieve it. If anyone knows, share it with us! Plus, like doing black and white photography, it was fun trying to find a composition/exposure solutions with the colour restriction.

snatacio, dont take any notice of the rating system, it only takes one person to lower the ticks and that would normally be by someone who dosent even make movies.

Anyone who makes movies knows the effort that goes into them so on that basis they are all 5 tick ratings http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

Hi Snatchio,
loved this movie. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gifI agree with some of the other comments made, it took me right back to my old comic book days and rekindled old memories.

That was truly excellant http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/11.gif http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/25.gif http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/11.gif

Shame about the faux 3 star rating though...Im shamed to admit that when I saw three stars I was not sure whether to download first of all but now im so glad I did. Its definitely a five star!!!

Maybe you can get a mod to remove or re-add the rating thing.....it may have been given a low mark by accident. I have not rated it yet as when I click the button im presented with 5 buttons to click but no description of which is the 5 star button (top or bottom ascending or descending order?) and I dont want to give it a 1 star by accident http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/1072.gif

Good work......really look forward to seeing some more of this comic style movie

Thanks for your reviews. It seems that this was a nostalgic piece of work for some. How old are you?!?!? http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_eek.gif I'm 31 this year and I don't remember these when I was small (and I was in England when I was about 5).

For you comic fans out there, this is the full story of the original cartoon http://www.diggerhistory.info/pages-asstd/comic.htm which is about a British submarine and a Sunderland being attacked by a German bomber. It took a healthy dose of make-belief to turn it into a story about an American carrier fending off a Kamikaze attack! http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/35.gif

Well I'll be 44 later this year. Went to art school so thought it looked like some cartoons I had seen when I was into making them. They actually had a cartooning class there.

But hey- you have motion, and thats a nice twist!

Interested in what you might come up with next http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_cool.gif

5 ticks from me, we need to get this up to 5 ticks, guys, so vote if you haven't done so yet.

Fantastic, snatchio.

This is what I love to see. Something you can just sit back and enjoy. And more too, I was admiring the comic effects, thought it would be a crappy comic story, but then the story really came to life with a moral.

Excellent!

And you deserve that Oleg! Only very few of us have received one of those http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/10.gif

snatchio
05-12-2006, 10:32 AM
Thanks Joe-90 for your support.

I'm glad you liked the story. I wanted to get that over-the-top story line typical in comic books, without getting too silly or political. Thanks for introducing me to Virtual Dub after my previous film. This film's black and white look was largely achieved by one of their filters. Quite a few effects to play around with in that program!

Japan will be battling for 90 minutes against the Tartan Army tomorrow. Get ready for a good spanking! http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/784.gif
Mind you, in the previous match, Japan had 20 shots against Bulgaria and only managed to score once, http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/partyhat.gif so with that success rate it won't be hard to beat us!

Snatchio,

That's the first comic book movie I've ever seen and I was really floored by it. You have a whole heap of talent.

Actually, it reminded me of my old war comic days: "Achtung, fallschirmjaeger", "For you Englander, the war is over." lol.

But on a more serious note, a poignant message that was nicely summarised in the ending shot.

Keep up the good work!

Thanks for the review everyone. I'm glad you liked the comic look.

Scharnhorst1943, I didn't put the credits in because it made the film longer and more time consuming without necessarily enhancing the film. But if you're interested, the main points are
Music: "Team America World Police" soundtrack
Programmes: FRAPS, Premiere Elements and Flash
Comic: Duel at Dawn http://www.diggerhistory.info/pages-asstd/comic.htm
Poem: Charge of the Light Brigade http://www.nationalcenter.org/ChargeoftheLightBrigade.html
Sound Effects: Stuff from internet plus big help from 310th Falcon

Joe-90, I think the trophy had Scotland's name on it before it started. It was sponsored and named after a beer! It would be rude for a Scotsman to refuse a massive tankard.

VR Scorpionworm, I hope you got to see the movie, and thanks Doolittle81 for giving the advice (because I had no idea!)

lol, tHeBaLrOgRoCkS you're Scottish too, I take it from your picture. There seems to be a lot of your compatriots in this forum. Someone did a post recently on "why so many from the UK?". It might be worth asking "Why so many from Scotland?".

Will also be interesting doing a general census on the community. Not only the geographical spread, but I noticed after doing this movie that there's quite a generation spread as well. It would be cool if someone's old enough to remember these WWII planes still flying (or even better, have flown them!)

Tooz_69GIAP
05-20-2006, 07:06 PM
There are a number of guys who flew either just at the end of the war, or just after it. I fly online regularly with one guy who flew Hellcats and Bearcats just after the war ended in the Pacific, and he's helped Oleg a lot with information on some of the US Navy aircraft.

P.S.- I'm in Scotland as well!

Of course, TOOZ 69GIAP you're Scottish too! With so many of you out there, you guys should have made Oleg extend the map in SOW: BOB up to the Highlands. Thanks for the comment, and sorry I didn't notice it. I've been too engrossed in the world cup preparations!

Most importantly, if anyone thinks they have a good movie, you might want to refrain from releasing it during the World Cup. Especially you boys doing FH&C.

However top marks to anyone who releases a football related IL2 movie on the eve of the Final. It'd be highly original and incredibly topical. I've seen skins which are based on their favourite (american) football teams. Anyone up for skinning Brazilian/German/English shirts etc. and make them move around in that stadium which exists as objects in the full mission generator?

Thats all I can say really. I meant to post a reply to this earlier - but I got side tracked.

This remined me of those comics which you linked earlier in the post (it reminded me of "Commando" and all those kind of comics) I thought it was highly original, and it must have taken some time http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-wink.gif

I especially loved the sound effects like the KA-BOOOOM http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_razz.gif
