I have a pic of my motherboard if anybody needs it, but I'm sure I can explain and you can understand my blabbing. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif
OK, currently I am running 1.5 gigs of RAM, the slots taken up are slots 1 and 3 as the motherboard book says to do. Now I want to pick up another stick of either 512 or 1 Gig, common sense tells me that I move the 512 to Slot number 2 and the 1 Gig to slot three to make the RAM even across the main memory slots(1 and 3, they are the same color). However, if I was to get a 512 stick which would I move to slot 2? The 1 gig to make the same color slots both 512?
How does one go about upgrading a 4 slots RAM slot motherboard. My last one only had two so it was not that confusing to me. Do the slots have to be the same RAM speed(512/1gig) to work properly?
Thanks in advance for any help. Or call me a coconut and boot me out the store. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/53.gif

The Athlon 64's don't really do well with three or four sticks of memory, you will likely be limited to DDR333. You'd be better off trying to sell what you have to lower the cost of a new 2gig set (2x1gig). I would suggest these: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16820231047
but anything on this page: http://www.newegg.com/Product/ProductList.asp?Submit=EN...&minPrice=&maxPrice= (http://www.newegg.com/Product/ProductList.asp?Submit=ENE&N=2010170147+1052308477+1052407862&Subcategory=147&description=&srchInDesc=&minPrice=&maxPrice=)
would be an improvement over 3-4 sticks of ram.

Hmm, can't seem to get to the other page for some reason.
The two gigs of RAM there do look good, the ones I'm running come from Kingston PC3200 DDR400.
I do plan to upgrade my CPU to an FX series, I just picked that Athlon 64 because it was cheap at the time and I needed a CPU to get my rig running.
In any case with any CPU, two sticks is better then three or four?

On a dual channel mobo, three sticks regulate you to single channel. You can still run dual channel mode with four sticks, but if you ever decide to oc any, raising the HTT may be a bit more unstable than it would using two sticks, plus like Urufu said, you would probably be regulated to DDR333. A fast matched set of two 1GB sticks will be the best way to go for performance.

Roger that, I get myself another 1 gig and drop the 512. 2 gigs should be enough for this sim and a number of games I have anyways.

Maximum memory for XP without a boot.ini mod and special apps to support it (IL2 is not one) is 2Gb
4 sticks is unstable in a lot of motherboards especially nvidia chipsets with mismatched ram
best solution matched pair of 1Gb modules
