The game freezes on random occasions. It mostly happens when there's an in-game cutscene or when playing simultaneous turns. It does happen randomly on top of this. It happens more often on 1280x1024 than 1024x768.

I tested both Vista and XP with different versions of the drivers on both platforms.

My hardware:
P4 2.8 Hyperthreading (tried disabling one but no change)
2gb ram
XFX Geforce 7900GS 512mb

Will there EVER be a patch to fix this? It's the same problem when trying to run HOMMV, Hammers of Fate and Tribes of the East.

1a. No game-development and no game-publishing companies can invest in issuing patches because a very small minority of its customers have the kind of problem that you have just described.

(The only rare times the H5 programme refused to launch was because of a corrupted save-game file or a corrupted custom-editor map-file : deleting the guilty file removed the obstacle.)

Please understand that it is not my intent to be nasty and belittle your problems. I am simply stating the obvious : complex game-programmes cannot flawlessly function, all of the time, on all PCs. No game developer and no game publisher can guarantee that : patches, then, cannot be issued to fix problems that are relatively rare.

Perhaps some more tech-wise expert than little me, after reading your DX-Diagnostic info, will pinpoint the cause of your problem and recommend a fix.

There might eventually be a 2.02 and a 3.01 patches (and who knows, a 1.07), but those patches will not be issued to fix all technical problems -- especially if very few customers are afflicted.

By the way, my PC's processor is the same as yours, my OS also is XP/SP2, and I am currently using the "same" videocard-drivers version (169.21 of 5 December 2007) for my GeForce 6800 -- the difference being that mine comes directly from nVidia (I don't use Omega drivers).

Random freezes and crashes can be hard to diagnose, as so many things can cause them.
They can be caused by overheating due to the load the game places on the CPU or GPU, they can be caused by a weak or failing power supply.
Applications or antivirus software running in the background can cause them, instaling new drivers over older ones without removing the old ones first can cause them.
As Sorceresss says, your computer hardware should be more than capable of running the game.
You say you have tried the game on both XP and Vista, were they both clean installs you tried the game on, or do you have XP on one drive and Vista on the other, as if it still froze on a clean install, it would help narrow down the cause.

They was both clean installs. I recently changed graphics card from a 7800GS-GLH from Gainward to a 7900GS from XFX, on the 7800GS-GLH the game ran just fine.

So it must be the 7900 series that's badly supported, I'm running with a 550W PSU which is more than enough for it. Temperature is okay, and would normally create texture leaks rather than a complete freeze.

Lack of Power normally just shuts down the computer.

I've tried everything I can think of, and the most stable I could make the game was to run under normal settings, 1024x768 (not 1280x1024 which is my flatscreen default so have to live with a smaller display) no FSAA or anistrophic filtering, turned off shadows as well as texture_mip as it seems to turn that on on normal settings.
