View Full Version : Silent Hunter 5 Concerns

I know this is approaching the SH5 game from a different perspective, but I do have some concerns about a possible 'dumbing down' of the game.
In the Q and A sticky that we have in this forum, we are able to put forward our thoughts and ideas of what we 'want to see' in any future release of the game without actually asking the question..'will the great features of the game remain the same??'.
At any time, on this forum, someone will have bought the game SH3/4 and will jump on here for advice concerning gameplay and the manner in which to complete certain tasks, ie plotting courses, aob, calculate distance to target, target speed etc, which goes to show that the game IS a sim and not for those who just want to buy the game and shoot up everything in sight like a first person shooter.
I would like to know if the 'difficulty' of the game is going to be retained. The reason I spend hours playing the game is purely that it is challenging and makes me think constantly about any action that I carry out. For me to play the game properly I have downloaded and used many of the tools that the people in this forum have provided to make the game more immersive.
I would like some sort of commitment from the devlopers that all the 'bells and whistles' that they are building into the game, which whilst being greatly appreciated, will not be to the detriment of the actual gameplay.

I don't believe the will alter the difficulty level as we know it from SH3 & 4. For as long as I've been playing the SH series the game got more and more options to tune it to your own hand. Pleasing both die hard sim fans and the slightly more arcade fans.
The learning curve went down for new players and for the die hard fans the could do nearly every thing them selfs if the wanted with full realism , making it more difficult for them selfs.
I seriously doubt that Ubisoft will steer away from it.

As far as I know its not being developed for any platform other than PC (No consoles) and as luviera point out it should have all the difficulty options of sh4...that said I think we are pretty safe from it being dumbed down... Its a PC game it should have all the PC options + I really love the realism % indicator on the option page in SH4...I hope they keep that in SH5

In a recent interview lead developer of the Silent Hunter series Dan Dimetrescu said that :
"Silent Hunter is a simulation and we wont change anything on that"
http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-wink.gif
He also said that all help tools for beginners who play Silent Hunter for the first time can of course be switched off in the realism options menu which all SH games have. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/25.gif

I totally agree and i think where on the same level.
Unfortunaly ubisoft cannot sell a game that says on the boxs it is so freaking realistic you spend 15 days on sea without any explosions. And before you go out on patrol you need at least 10 days of training (Which would actually be the greatest dynamic book ever)

SH5 will in all likelyhood, be a bugfixed version of SH4, with extra first person shooter styled eyecandy laid on top of it. I wouldn't expect any decline in gameplay mechanics, but i wouldnt expect any significant improvements to the sim portion either.

You are probably right. Hope they leave enough freedom for the modders!

this is ubisoft we're talking about. they've been butchering game franchises like it's their job. ghost recon and rainbow six anyone?
they did everything they could to botch up the two most prominent clancy games. they went from some of the most realistic and popular shooter franchises to bargain bin value crap.
i wouldn't be surprised if ubisoft in their infinite wisdom decide to ruin silent hunter too. the only saftey this game has is that it's too difficult to make into a console game therefore they might not take it and convert it into an ugly mess like rainbow six vegas1/2 or ghost recon 2.

SH4 did an okay job in terms of providing optiuons to scale the difficulty between inexperienced necomers and hard-core players. If any simulation title is going to grow it's player base it has to appeal to both extremes.
Inexperienced newecomers who get hooked on the game will eventually turn into more hard-core players as their knowledge about the game improves and their taste for more authenticity grows. Any decent game should be easily scaleable to cater for the changing skills levels of a player.
SH4 failed at making the game more approachable at the lower skill end due to a terrible manual and rather worthless Subschool tutorials. This will turn off a lot of people from becoming more interested in the game and any sequels as well as putting off potential buyers as reviews point out 'steep learning curves'.
The SH5 devs just need to tackle in-game tutorials and decent manual (be it printed or PDF) to give both newcomers all they need to enjoy the game early on so they can be 'hooked', as well as implementing features that allow players to scale the difficulty as their skills grow.

One concern I have is being able to set the torpedo depth to what I want. I was trying to sink a destroyer in SHIV today and the boat had such a shallow draft that even at the minimum setting (4 I think it was), the torpedo went right under the keep and didn't do anything, even set to contact/proximity. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/blink.gif

I hope they dont dumb down SH5 coz it will take all the realisum out of the game. for all us die hard players out here. And i hope they dont make the same mistakes as SH4.
