I always start with the spy to get a better understanding of the map then when its time to switch to merc I'll know were my freinds are more likely to go.

Which ever side i get to first, you know when you join a game you have to go to a side to even it out. well that will decide which side i play first.

I dont like choosing sides, i agree with spartan about the noobs that come in to play spy and leave when their turn is up. I like to play both sides of the game it's fun and it makes the game more interesting, keeping it from becoming dull.

When I played PT back in the days. I always played as merc (U) and spy. The best way to enjoy the game!

Its a thing with this game I hated, which I see still is going on. Spy Noobs ( No offence )

But the game is brilliant! To know both sides, gives advantage on both sides.

This is what I'll do when I get the game.

Install it.
Get new drivers.
Uninstall, reinstall.
Watch intro.
Head to options, review multiplayer controls.
Visit a map as Spy. Run around. Memorize.
Visit same map as Merc. Run around. Memorize. Devise a basic strategy for Merc defense.
Repeat last 3 for next 7 maps.
Start Xfire.
Join friends game.
Have fun.

bad topic and not enough choices. You dont choose which one you play first unless you are a real turd. Because people who "choose" are the spy *****s that we normally see (We may have merc *****s now but IDK)

I'm ganna get so pissed when we have 3 people in a party and waiting for one more. The other person joins and its a little kid. We already have 2 spies and 1 merc (not including little kid). Little kid readies up as spy. Host says "Go merc", Little kid says "But I hate merc/suck at merc."

Learn to f*ckin play both. IMO, I will try to get better at merc first cause that in some ways makes me a better spy.
