Logout once and longin again on Ubi Game Launcher solved the problem for me.
Also I changed the nickname in My Realm page on the official site before that (though it didn't solved the problem just with that this may required.)

After the initial install the game auto-patches, I have a Settlers 7 profile with the same username, I have 'remember me' unclicked in the UGL login. The firewall is turned off.
I get the server unavailable message after the girl on horse with candle screen - this happened about 4 or 5 times; no successful logins.
Now, the game returns this error:
CIDER C RUNTIME LIBRARY
Program: C:\The Settlers 7\Data\Base\_Dbg\Bin\release\Settlers7R.exe
Abnormal Program Termination
It freezes before the girl on horse screen and the and has to be 'force quit'. On the next start attempt, it gives the message that the program didn't start properly previously and regardless of whether the settings are reset or not, the same thing happens and the program freezes.
I have uninstalled, reinstalled, and the same thing happens.

I´m afraid to say it´s no use...
I have talked to Ubisoft Tech support. They won´t and can´t fix this problem. It is too hard and difficult for them to fix. Sorry, but I advise everyone who got this problem to return it to the seller and get your money back.
Sorry Ubi, but someway or another it had to come out...

WOW - didn't this just happen to Assaisns Creed 2.....to play the game you have to log in, even if you want to play the standard game. What a joke. Here's an idea so we don't have to put up with stuff like this, only make us log in if we want to play multiplayer.....thx

okay, Its bad enough that I cannot play a game that I have paid 50 bucks for, but now even if I try to go into the demo (which btw, I have thoroughly enjoyed playing) I get a window that pops up and says " Ubisoft game launcher Error code 1." So now I cant even play the goddam demo. For Frags Sake, fix the bloody thing. What kind of company releases a game that people cannot play, surely you lot there must have learnt a lesson from Assassins Creed 2? Yes? No? Create a patch that at the very least allows us to play single player mode without the internet connection until you mob can figure out how to fix the game entirely.
Not Happy.

Yet again I wonder if Ubisoft's Customer Support department has stopped responding to and resolving tickets related to "Server Not Available". It's infuriating going nearly a week between each response (a reponse containing no solution either) when it has been a month since I purchased the game. I didn't pay 55 Euros for a soundtrack, damn it.

Ok i have had this probem since start. It worked one time for several hours, but the next day the same thing happend again.
I got i to work now. i went in to my router and allowed my computer to have unrestricted internet access. I did this by typing my computers IP in the DMZ page on my router and the game runs fine.
As that can be somewhat of a security risk i changed the IP on my router back to the original one, and the game still works.
Hope this will help you.

UPDATE:
We have tracked down the issue - it's a problem that occurs when linking your keys to the multiplayer profile.
Ubisoft GNS and TG-OPS are currently working on a solution - I'll keep you updated.
UPDATE:
We have "unlocked" those accounts which we could identify as having this specific problem (this process is automated to run hourly)
If this has solved the problem for you (sometime last week) we'd appreciate a short notice.
If your problem persists please make sure there's nothing else (http://forums.ubi.com/eve/forums/a/tpc/f/6061083365/m/4651055548) blocking your connection.
UPDATE:
One more thing: if you have changed your password - uncheck "Remember me" in the UGL (hit "Logout" after starting) somtimes it fails to notice the change...(and then wrongly displays "Server not available") </div></BLOCKQUOTE>

I find it unbelievable that this issue has been going on since March with no resolution. This is such a classic example of legitimate buyers being punished and pirates rewarded by asinine DRM. You do realize that the people who are going to steal your games have already figured out how to do so, right? While the rest of us paid through the nose for the pleasure of staring at an error message.

I'd just like to echo the above poster's sentiments. This thread is at over 100 pages, perhaps some of these people had firewall problems, but regardless, this is a problem created solely by the inane DRM. I was very interested in purchasing splinter cell in the coming weeks but this has really soured me on the whole idea.

I've got a different problem than most. I have never had any difficulty playing on line till today.
My PC has been freezing on me. So I decided to restore it. After restoration I had to repatch this game. And now the game is telling me I have no internet connection and failed to log into the Ubisoft Master Sever.
Obviously I have internet connection as you can see. I've check my fire wall settings, It's allowing this game and UGL to get thru. I've also reinstalled the game, but still get the same error message. Game was working fine till I had to repatch it.

6 weeks? You'd better get in touch with your internet provider, check your router, get in touch with tech support so they might check your account etc., because I refuse to believe the problem is on Ubisoft's side.

6 weeks? You'd better get in touch with your internet provider, check your router, get in touch with tech support so they might check your account etc., because I refuse to believe the problem is on Ubisoft's side. </div></BLOCKQUOTE>
LOL, then you are seriously Jaded. Nothing wrong with my net or router, I have no problems playing other games online, just this one. It's Ubisoft, and to think otherwise would be utterly stupid.

Please note that this thread is about a clearly identified issue that keeps some users (esp. from Australia) from creating/activating their multiplayer profile.
Unfortunately this leads to the "server unavailable" message which is also displayed for general connection issues.
The workaround for this problem is to log into the MyRealm (http://www.thesettlers.com/myrealm) site once - approximately one hour later your account should be "unlocked".
If your problem does not precisely fit this description it is most likely a different issue!
You can find some general hints on connection problems here (http://forums.ubi.com/eve/forums/a/tpc/f/3601083258/m/4651055548) - if that does not solve your problem you should get into contact with our support (http://support.ubi.com/) or post your problems in this forum (preferably in this order).
As I've said before: I will close this thread soon, when the workaround mentioned above is no longer needed.

Question regarding this issue: has Customer Support stopped answering tickets? A week between responses seem absurdly long, especially since it boasts a 48-hour max time between replies.

For those that have an issue, if you have PeerBlock running on your computer, it is most likely causing the issue. I had been trying all day yesterday and figured it out today. If you do have PeerBlock, you will have to allow the connections(may have to start the game a couple times to allow all the connections) or turn it off while playing the game.
For allowing the connections, make sure PeerBlock is opened on your desktop before starting the game, then just use Alt Tab to switch to PeerBlock while you are loading the game. Right click on one of the events in the log file and click "Allow (IP address) Permanently". You only have to do this for different addresses, if they are the same, you can skip over them.

ok so i done heeps of research and cant find a fix, so i contacted Consumer affairs in Aus and they said
Thank you for your email.
You have contacted Consumer Protection at the Department of Commerce in the state of Western Australia. Consumer Protection may be able to provide assistance:
- where there is a dispute between a consumer and a trader about a contract for goods/services.
- the contract for goods/services is for private use
- contract was formed in Western Australia
- with a Western Australian business.
The Fair Trading Act states that a consumer can return goods for a remedy if:
- the item has a fault that wouldn't normally be detected at the time of purchase;
- the item is not the same as described by the salesperson, or on a label or sign, or in an advertisement, or does not match the sample shown;
- the item is not suitable for the customer's intended use as described to the sales person before the purchase.
You may wish to contact the products technical help line to determine whether the product is faulty or if technical assistance is required to utilize the product. Should the product be faulty the Department recommends you approach the trader (place of purchase) to negotiate a remedy.
If a consumer returns an item that is subsequently proven to be faulty they have a right to a remedy of a repair or a replacement or a refund. Where it is possible to return any item in a dispute to full merchantability by repair, traders in the first instance should be given reasonable time to effect the repairs. If that is not achievable, due to the nature of the fault or due to the lack of response from the trader, then consumers are advised to seek a replacement or a refund.
Goods do not have to be returned with original packaging to obtain a remedy. Customers must be able to show proof of purchase. Price tags, credit card statements and cheque butts are not necessarily considered proof of purchase.
What settlement the customer receives depends on what is fair and reasonable. If the consumer believes that the remedy offered by the trader is not fair and reasonable, Consumer Protection may be able to offer assistance.
Where the goods require sending to the manufacturer for assessment or repair, this would be the responsibility of the trader, not the consumer. Should the trader refer the consumer to the manufacturer directly, the Department can accept a complaint.
To lodge a formal complaint with the Department the procedure is to write to the trader concerned and clearly outline the situation and what has happened to cause concern, include what you would like the outcome to be. Request a written response within 7-10 days.
Should you receive no response or a negative response you may lodge a formal complaint with our Department. This is done by completing, printing and posting in the attached form. Once the complaint form is lodged we will then endeavour to conciliate with the trader on your behalf.
Please find attached a copy of the Department's publication: "Retail - Your Rights When Shopping".
Should you have any further queries you are welcome to contact Consumer Protection’s Call Centre on 1300 30 40 54, Monday to Friday, 8.30am - 5pm or visit our website at www.commerce.wa.gov.au (http://www.commerce.wa.gov.au) .

The workaround doesn't work either. I've tried over and over again and nothing works. I live in the UK so it's not just Aus that has the problem. I've contacted your tech support and have still not had a reply....It's just not good enough!!!

I totally agree with Shazann. I live in the USA and I am having the same problems. There needs to be a patch that unlocks offline play at the very least untill this mess is properly sorted out! http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_mad.gif

I've been playing for a while now using the steam version. It worked fine, until I noticed about 3 days ago, that I was still using version 1.01 of the game, which explained why I rarely found enemies on empire (and always the same 5 people).
Ok, no patch on steam yet, so I was helping myself using the updater in the settlers 7 directory (DON'T blame me for this). Got 1.05, and I found NO empire game at all; once it was full but it never started.
The next day steam was suddenly patching the game with a 2 gb patch. After that nothing's working at all, always getting the "Server not available" message. Reinstalled the game via Steam, still nothing.
This is getting plain ridiculous. Being a programmer myself I wonder if you even test what you are doing. I'm a patient guy and have been patient so far, but this was my last ubisoft and bluebyte game. You really screwed up.
