What is better? Athlon XP or Pentium 4? (Let's say a P4 2.6 and a Athlon 2600+)

The P4 2.6 has higher clockspeed but I would still choose the 2600+ .. It has higher benchmark results in gaming /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-wink.gif

A P4 is way more expensive because Intel is sort of a 'famous' brand ... so ... AMD ALL THE WAY!! /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-very-happy.gif

The new P4 Extreme Editions have 2MBs of L3 cache memory which is supposed to make them faster than the AMD 64s. Intel will release the Prescott (P5) very soon, which will be 64-bit, and have the same features as the Extreme Edition, and it will be even smaller, because it will be operating on a .09 micron process.

How much money are you willing to spend on the processor? If you are not going for the Athlon 64, then go with a fast pentium. The upper end P4s outperform the upper end Athlons, in part because you can get a motherboard with 800 mhz front side buss on the P4, while 400 mhz is the best you can do on an Athlon, and even that is only if you get a Barton core CPU.

If you ARE willing to spend huge quantities of cash, go for the Athlon 64 FX-51. It's about $750 for the processor alone. The P4EE is about $1000 I would guess, since the announced $925 price tag is only for bulk purchases of a thousand or more. FAR FAR too much money, in my opinion, especially since the benchmarks I have seen still have the FX-51 outperforming it. You can get a straight Athlon 64 for about $450, last time I looked.

I'm have nothing to do right now so I am going to ramble my thoughts and experiances. I bought an Alienware computer about a month ago and I ordered it with a AMD 64-FX-51. I chose the 64 FX because it not only came out 2 monthes before the pentium 4EE but it was cheaper, it is ready for 64 bit applications unlike the 32 bit pentium 4's, it's easier to overclock and when it comes to games it is faster in 7 of 10 benchmarks, it scores higher CPU marks and scores higher 3D marks as well. When it comes to everything else including video encoding and ripping files, the P4 EE outperforms the 64-FX-51. So really it is a matter of what you do with your PC right? When it comes to games, the AMD 64-FX-51 is better from what I have seen. When it comes to everything else the P4 is best. If this is true than I don't see a point in the EE series . The P4 series is faster at everything except for photoshop and games. The 3.2GHzEE is hardly any faster than the regular P4 series when it comes to your everyday programs(it may encode video a whole 2 seconds faster than a regualr 3GHz pentium 4) and when it comes to games it may outperform the rest of the P4 series but it still doesn't take back the perormance crown when it comes to games. Basically the FX 51 beat the 3.2GHZ when playing video games so Intel released the EE which is supposed to be a processor designed for gaming but the 64 FX beats it as well, so they wasted their time in my opinion. Also I have beef with Intel's pricing. 700 dollars is a lot of money but I can't see spending even more on a processor that is 32 bit. In the next four monthes you will probably see a 64 bit verion of windows and game companies will start making games with 64 bit processors in mind. When this happens the AMD 64 FX 51's will get even faster than they are now and the current P4's will be useless. Intel will release their consumer level version of their current Itanium series in about a year, but until then I would'nt spend much money on a 32 bit processor. From what I hear AMD is going to quit selling 32 bit processors in the year 2005. Why spend 700+ when it won't be worth anything in a year? I know that all chips that come out will be outdated in a year but AMD 64 bit chips will not only work with the technology of 2005 but they will actually speed up from what they are doing now. Of course Intel plans on striking back but right now their 64 bit processors are so expensive that they can't release them competitivly. Intel responded to this by saying that Home user don't need 64 bit processoers which is really dumb in my opinion. It's like saying we don't need high def TV's. Sure we don't NEED them but they are better and we certainly want them if we can afford them. So, if AMD will make them a affordable prices then why not buy them since Intel is being rediculous? I firmly believe that Intel's 64 bit processors will outperform AMD's but how much will they cost and how long will we have to wait? I hear that it will be in a year but it may be even longer than that. Intels 32 bit processors are more expensive than AMD's 64 bit so I figure they will probably charge through the roof for these chips. When the Intel 64 bit chips are finally released next year AMD will have had it's 64 bit processors out on the market for a while and they will probably be even cheaper than they are now(not that they are cheap in any way.) Well, that is why I made the decision I did. I tried to do my homework and look at the benchmarks(though benchmarks don't always reflect real performance, I still hear from some people that the P4EE is faster, who do you listen to? But most benches I have seen show the 64 ahead in games) Really, if you are not planning on buying a 64 FX series then I would go for a lower level Intel chip. Intel has been outperfroming AMD for almost a year now and the FX 51 is the first time I have seen AMD pull ahead in a long time. You can get a 2.4GHz Intel chip on a 800 FSB for really good prices. Place that with a good GPU and most games will run pretty good. Though AMD's 3200+ and their operton series are still great chips. That is what I think is great. They are actually compeating again and hopfully that will push both companies to make bigger and better processors. I was getting tired of Intel's iron hold over the market. They would pretty much just overclock their current processor and then add a bigger fan on it to compensate for the extra heat. It wouldn't be such a big deal if they didn't sell them for 700 dollars. They were making big bucks and they weren't even doing anything. What do you guys think about 64 bit gaming as well as the price of currnet processors from both companies?

PS. I want to clarify that even though I currently have some beef with Intel I am not a Fanboy of AMD. I had a Intel 32 bit processor as well as a Pentium II 450 and a PIII 1GHz. This is the first time I have ever bought a CPU from another company. I have no problam going back to intel if they have the fastest gaming CPU the next time I am on the market for a processor, but I also consider price into the equation. I don't mind paying alot but I won't pay 300 dollars more for a chip that is only 2 frames a second faster when it comes to the games I play. Well that is the end of my rant. I hope I didn't tick anybody off and maybe informed a few that were intersted in the topic.
