Ok. This thread is simply a place to gush about DM.

I just joined this forum after seeing some gameplay footage from 1up.com and a small preview. As I was watching the footage I realized a strange burning sensation in my eyes and some moist substance all over my hands and keyboard. My eyes were burning cause my face was pressed up against the monitor and it turns out there was drool EVERYWHERE.

This game is the one I've been waiting to get hyped about for awhile. First I was hyped about Oblivion. Then I played it. And it was, y'know, pretty good. I wished the combat was better. Then I was playing DOD Source. I love DOD Source, but all the time I'd think.. man, I wish someone would make a game with physics and stuff from the Source engine, along with killer graphics, but set in a "LAND OF HIGH FANTASY".. with SWORDS n' junk. I remember going up to my roommate earlier on in the day and telling him that.

Then I visited 1up.com, like I'm oft to do, and BAM I see this game and ascend to new levels of geekdom. It was meant to be. I was meant to become an insane, raving fan for this game, even before it's released.

I'm sure this type of thread's been made before, so, I'll apologize in advance... but I didn't want to go searching through the archives for this topic.. I WANTED TO RAVE.

What really excites you about this game?!?!?!

I forget my hunger, need to urinate, and need to socialize, when i'm on the forum, and watching clips for this game.

Yea!! I saw a screenshot of an orc being decapitated. I sorta squealed like a lil' girl when I saw that. I'VE ALWAYS WANTED TO DECAPITATE JUNK!!

My buddy who was playing Oblivion earlier on in the day, just before I found this game, was lamenting about how you couldn't do anything like that in Oblivion, cause he wanted to decapitate his vanquished foes in the arena. Does this combat feature mean that we can expect to see some hacked off limbs, torsoes, pinkie fingers, etc.?

?!?

What excites me most about this game? it has to be the magic concept. After looking at the prwviews I really got impressed by the spellcasting, it looks really great.

I never get tired of watching them shoot ice on the ground, then the orc slipping off the cliff.

Yea, the magic looked pretty cool from the gameplay footage. The whole telekinesis thing and the powering up the lightning and junk?! And the way your hand is on fire? Cool.

Did you see that one part in the footage where those ninja dudes are dodging your fireballs? Man, that looked sawweeet. I can just imagine all the fast paced combat that's gonnna happen, where you really need to have good accuracy with your sword and magic to hit the buggers.

Yea, the combat is definitely what I'm really excited about. If it's a good, deep system, can you imagine how it would work with multiplayer? Think of a 32 person server with people clashing swords, dueling with magic and sneaking in the shadows, waiting to sneak attack an unsuspecting noob... but where you can actually get GOOD at it.

Thus far the trailers i've watched and the interviews that i've read, things look really promising.

Also it seems i like the combat very much in Dark Messiah as compared to Oblivion.

Only thing i'm worrying is Motion Sickness though.

JibbyJam

Haha, motion sickness? I dunno if I quite get it... but I think you're talkin' about how your screen bobs up and down when you run. I can see how that would make some people vomitous, I guess! http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

Ahh, I just read the other thread on motion sickness.. and now I'm more confused. Do you actually feel sick when playing certain games?

I used to get that with cars. It sucks. Can't read books or watch anything other than the road while I'm in a car.

NO you don't understand... the LACK of the bobbing motion when walking/running is what will make you motion sick! HL2 lacks the runbob/walkbob, but Doom3/Quake4 and UT have it implemented properly. HL2 makes me sick, the others don't! Trust me on this... I e-mailed the devs to MAKE SURE they put in runbob features, at least optional.

I'm new here. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/clap.gif

Some random facts about me:

-I Love RPGs (tabletop and computer)
-I Love fantasy
-I had been reading Steven Erikson's Bonehunters when I stumbled uppon Dark Mesiah and the first thing I saw in the trailer was an assasin's dual wielding and http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_eek.gif I thought about Kalam Mekhar from the book!
-Second shock came from the frost/bridge move and that's when I thought "That's why I bought Oblivion, and it hasn't fulfilled my expectations"

Well, I'm a working guy and I don't have 400 hours to spend on Oblivion. I want a focused adventure that will make me live inside my character and even if it finishes after 30-40 hours it will leave a sweet memory. Like Gothic did http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

Bring it on http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

Wellcome Artdrone http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif I think I'm in the same position as you so I understand how you feel for Oblivion http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_wink.gif But I'm sure we will have plenty of fun with Dark Messiah and Gothic 3!!! Those two are diferent gamestyle games.

You know you can edit previously made posts, right? At the bottom right of your post you can see a yellow triangle, and next to that a folder with an eraser. Click that folder and it'll let you change the content of that post - it's loads better than double posting (which is generally considered spamming).

Hey, thanks for the welcome http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

I guess what is bothering me with Elder Scrolls is that your character is really faceless. Well, he/she has a face but we can't hear him talk and express him/herself. Even Arx Fatalis did that right (which rocked by the way) and Gothic did it right also even with the nearly atrocious voice acting :P

I have faith in Arkane Studios, arx was so great first effort that we can sleep easily. And I have faith in Ubisoft since they gave us some of the best games ths side of the decade like Beyond Good & Evil, Prince of Persia (I liked the SoT best but whatever) etc.

I really don't care if it's a spin-off, I prefer a spin-off than a struggled try to mimic the old school M&M games. I say let them do their best they can and we can judge (or/and enjoy) the final product. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

Ahh.. Ok I sorta figured as much. There seemed to be lots of runbob from the gameplay footage that they've released. Haven't you seen them? Rejoice?!

I always like that sort of added realism. I liked being able to look down and see my feet on the edge of a drop in Thief 3 when it was in first-person view... and I'm happy that you seem to be able to do that in DM.

Hmmm, I agree that it would be sweet to have good quality voice acting... but I don't know if I'd care to have a specific character attached to the protagonist. I actually sorta LIKE not having your character saying stuff in Oblivion... simply because I don't think they'd be able to match what I would like him/her to sound like in my head.

It's the same as with games like Halflife and Zelda. You don't hear Gordon or Link talk because the developers don't want the players to be disappointed with what they hear. It loses some of the mystery of the character. If you want, you can yell at the screen what you think your character would say in the situations that crop up, and hopefully the NPC's respond naturally. Before you click on "Rumours," simply scream at the NPC, "HEY YOU?! HAVE YOU HEARD ANYTHING STRANGE LATELY?!" It works, trust me. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/winky.gif

I liked to hear the hero's voice in Gothic, but in that game the starting character is the same for everyplayer, and the same goes for Arx (in which I love Am Shegar's voice btw).

That can't be done in a game like Oblivion. What really irks me in Oblivion is the repetitiviness, afater 3 hours of wandering outdoors and 3 dungeons you've seen all of it, it is again and again doing quests in the same environment, it gets boring to me.

I want a reason to explore a dungeon, to have to find or do something especial in it, that 's why I love Deus Ex and System Shock 2 experience system, you get exp reward for doing things, not by killing stuff, that way you only concetrate in doing things and exploring. And that is the experience sytem DM will use (Raf said so).

Oblivion is DULL, lacks immersion, the world is so perfect and 'clonic' (cities are really lame) that you can't get involed in it.

Damn, I need DM or Bioshock or Gothic 3 SOON!

I agree. Wee tought out voice-acting is very impotrtant. It gives the game a better "spark" or "charm".

Just look at the Metal Gear Solid series. That voice-acting is superb.

JibbyJam
04-16-2006, 03:52 PM
I can see your point when referring to the repetetiveness of Oblivion, but I think you may be judging it a bit too harshly. If you simply go from dungeon to dungeon it would be boring. The game intends for you to follow the quests, for the most part, and deviate to the dungeons placed throughout when you feel the hankerin' for some looting. That's the way I see it. It has a much better feel that way. Plus, you see where the developers put all their hard work: into the quests. I dunno if you've played through them, but almost all the quests in that game have some crazy twist in them that you weren't expecting. Don't sit in a tavern and watch the NPCs eat imaginary food! Do the quests, and note the other things on the side. THEN you will be immersed. More. There, I'm done defending Oblivion..

As for voice-acting with the protagonist: It really depends on the style of the game. Yea, if you're Solid Snake, who is a rich, full-bodied character, (wow, i just made him sound like something tasty) with very specific attributes, then you almost NEED good voice-acting because it just completes the package.

What I'm saying with games like Zelda, Halflife, ES and maybe DM, is that the protagonist is more of an "everyman"... someone who the player sees himself as, even though the spectrum of types of people who play the game is large. If you give a voice to that protagonist, it might "ruin it" for a great percentage of the people. Plus, it adds mystery. Do you see where I'm going?
