Hi all, hoping someone can help me with this problem.
Just installed Grandmaster Edition with 1.0.2 patch, latest Nvidia 186.18 drivers (17th June 09)
The intro video works fine, when the menu screen loads I see a black screen with a single pawn.
I can close the window by clicking the top right where the X would normally be and I get the normal "Are you sure...Y/N" and can then exit.
Any ideas appreciated.
Thanks,
John

Sorry....
Neglected to say that running Vista x64 Ultimate in a dual 19" monitor configuration at 1280 x 1024 at 32bit depth
Plenty of RAM, HDD space etc.

And tried Medium (16bit) with no luck
Will try with UBI Tech Support

It's definatelly a video problem, but I have no idea what it could be. Maybe some video card settings like hardware acceleration or something like that.

Thanks for the reply.
There are a lot of possible configuration options on this video card, would take a very long time to work through all the possible combinations.
Anyone have any idea on anti-aliasing etc recommended options for Chessmaster?

You mentioned you were going to contact Ubisoft Technical Support (http://support.ubi.com); what did they say?
Here's a few of my settings:
Anisotropic filtering: 8x
Antialiasing - Gamma correction: On
Antialiasing - Setting: 4x
Antialiasing - Transparency: Off
Force mipmaps: None
Maximum pre-rendered frames: 3
Texture filtering - Anisotropic sample optimization: Off
Texture filtering - Negative LOD bias: Clamp
Texture filtering - Quality
Texture filtering - Trilinear optimization: Off
Triple buffering: Off

Just had the pleasure of speaking to technical support who said that two monitors are not supported ?!
So will try the recommendations which are:
Uninstall the extra monitor
Uninstall the game
Reinstall the game
Retest
I have to admit I'm pretty sceptical, if it works then I'll have to return the game anyway.
Two monitors have not affected any other game I've played on here nor would I expect it to.

Pleasure? It sounds like you had the typical Technical Support experience... http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_rolleyes.gif
I have two monitors, and I don't have any problems.
Let me ask this... Do you have the latest service packs for Vista installed? And did you install Chessmaster into the recommended folder (C:\Program Files\Ubisoft\Chessmaster Grandmaster Edition)? If the answer to either of these is no, then install all the latest service packs, and make sure you install Chessmaster to the recommended folder.

Hmm some success - after deciding to ignore Technical Support - I've played around with some of the settings provided by KHollister (thanks)
I managed to see the chessboard on downgrading the Antialiasing to 4x, but have had some issues with the chess pieces appearing as all black and jagged.
Will have to mess around a bit more

I've installed all the service packs, and the install went to the default C:\Program Files(x86)\... directory
I'm still trying to mess around with the 3D settings - hopefully will figure out which ones work soon http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

Ok - I give up.
I've set the Only2DBoards option and I can now use it
I've tried Antialising 4x, down to 2x and up to 16x and Ansiotropic filtering off on and any which way http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/compsmash.gif with as many combinations as I can think of.
In the interests of keeping my sanity I'll hope http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/51.gif there is a patch at some point that fixes this.
Thanks for all your help
I experienced the exact same problem after updating nVidia drivers for my Quadro FX3450. Spent an hour fiddling with nVidia Control Panel's settings and gave up. Fastest and easiest solution was to rollback the driver:
From: Version 8.16.11.9173 (12/17/2009)
To: Version 7.15.11.7813 (9/17/2008)
