Valk, you're right girl gamers always seem to hang out in packs. Very nice article. Now write one on how to find one offline as well. lol

Great blog Val! =)
I'm happy to say that I'm with the BEST gamer-gal out there http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_wink.gif, and having a g/f who loves games too is one of the best things there is!

Hmm.
To me, this seems an awful lot like those "how-go-get-in-contact-with-women-at-a-bar"-guide you find in men magazines.
I think, that if you spend a lot of time running around in WOW for example, doing nothing but looking for a girl to play with, you should maybe spend your time doing something else.
When I played, if I came across a female character, I just assumed it was a female playing. I didn't go around wondering and not sleeping, while thinking about if this was in fact a real girl or not.
And I honestly didn't care that much, as long as said person was well behaved.
While this is a useful tool in the search for a real female gamer, I somehow think it might not be such a good idea to make such a tool.
I mean, if you have a guy, who is playing WOW and is so desperate to play with real girls, that he absolutely has to make sure beyond any doubt, even though it's a female character, would you really want to give said player a precise tool for locating those girls?
What's he gonna do, when he finds them?
I guess what I don't quite understand is, why you have to make a specific guide in locating actual female players.
If it's uncomfortable to girls to be asked about their sex, just ignore the persons who ask.
Btw: I've also made a few female characters during my time in WOW, but that's mainly because the undead females casting animation looks wicked IMO. But then again, I've always called them stuff like BODAD (Bringer Of Destruction And Doom).
Just my two cents.

It's weird, I've actually had people that I've never seen before ask me in games about the Frag Dolls.

I normally look for girls when playing online but more because in the three years I've been on Xbox Live, I've found a lot of the more enjoyable people I've played with have ended up being female.

It's funny because I was actually going to run over to my 1up blog and write about how I don't have The Last Unicorn syndrome anymore. Every time I go into a gamestop or EB games or just out anywhere in general, I seem to run into more and more girls that play games.
For example, girls that I have been friends with for YEARS have been talking to me about video game recently, because they had gotten into them on their own, or started playing with their boyfriend's console. I also see little girls out at the mall constantly holding pink DS's in their hands. I see more of them in EB (and I'm in there everyday because it's literally a 2 second walk from my counter) buying Wii games and sometimes asking about 360 games.
It's such a nice change, really, and something I have only started to notice within the past year or so.
And now I feel like watching The Last Unicorn.

Interesting blog. A lot of it has a ring of truth. Especially the hanging out in packs point. Still see it on MUDs. (Yes, people still play those crazy text-based games and I'm one of those guilty people). For instance, a new guild opened up and all the females seemed have swarmed to it and made it their own guild. If aren't "in" with them you have a heck of a time. They can be very protective.
You know, thinking about it too. I have only heard one legitmate girl online before. It was playing Halo. Just a random game. Most of the time I hear whiney 13-year-olds or thug wanna-bes.
Ah well, life goes on.

amen to that. i still get frustrated with the "Is this a gift" comment when I buy a game at EB. I mean, wake up! get with the times! maybe cuz i'm around so many girl gamers (not just here), I feel like they're not as rare as we all think they are.

I literally live at the mall, and the EB is right outside of the cosmetics department. In the past week, I've seen 5 women buy a wii with games, and they were for themselves (because when I asked them about it, they told me it was for them! haha).

Glad I don't have to worry about this. I find them all over now. Or, should I say that they find me. I was at Staples, and while asking for some help finding some stuff, got sniffed out by the girl to the fact that I was a gamer. That was pretty cool. Not something that happens everyday. You know, finding female gamer friends on xlive, outside of xlive.

Same here, I would rather play with a random girl than a guy. Just because the attitude towards the GAME is much more pleasant from the girl.

Agreed.
Girls are much more focused on the goals and objectives of the GAME.
Guys are, generally (NOT ALL), focused on trash talking. It gets old quick.

It's amazing how being yourself and being polite with everyone will often-times make ladies (and guys) more likely to want to hang out with you. It's equally amazing how stalking and hitting on someone and constantly drooling on them will make them want to leave.
Weird. =P
Good Blog, Valk! =)

sorry I didnt get a chance to reply yet guys, I was out of town for two weeks.
Anyway, I am glad most of you enjoyed the blog and for those that didnt.. "eh". I thought it would be a cute write and would be interesting to some.
I agree, I can definatly see a trend of more females gaming, but I am not sure how much of that is based on the communities I am in either. I still run into guys that freak out about playing with a girl, however it is indeed on a much smaller scale then the past. =P

I think you forgot to mention that often girls tend to have unoriginal gamertags\nicknames that are usually some combination of their real name, initials, year of birth and/or year of graduation. I think maybe this is more common in girls that are newer to gaming because they are unaware of the culture and history when picking a name for the first time, so they have no gamer knowledge to draw from.
Also likely candidates: pink, hot\cute\sweet, lady\girl\chick\baby, miss\mrs, queen\princess, butterfly\fly\angel, a part of their appearance\body (blonde, brunette, greeneyes) or some type of food or flower.
P.S. I just quickly compiled that list from the PMS clan member roster :P It is kind of scary.

Haha I thought that was a pretty hilarious little write-up. I've gone over this with my buddies in game quite a bit. Unless all you do is play video games, don't worry about looking for girls in the game, just have fun. I love playing with my friends that have female avatars, whether male or female, it's always amusing to watch the attempted flirting.
So, really, you should be explaining how to flirt to those males who can't cut it, not how to find the girls. Hell, that's really easier then you make it seem. Good read tho, thanks http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

I find that girl gamers have no problem with the question, "Are you a girl gamer?"
This let's them know that:
1) I believe girl gamers exist.
2) I am recognizing that they might be one.
It allows them to answer in the affirmative, henceforth establishing their status as a legitimate girl gamer with me.
