One of the greatest mysteries surrounding Halo 3, the function of the enigmatic X button, isn't a mystery any more. In the most recent installment of Bungie's weekly update about the 360's flagship FPS, one of the company's employees known as Frankie revealed exactly how the X button will help you finish the fight this November.

No, it won't give you strange mutant powers or help you compete with your brother, Speed in stock car races, nor will it fight for civil rights. Instead, the X button or the "Equipment" button allows the hard-as-nails Master Chief to, get this, equip items like Tripmines and that impressive Bubble Shield you've seen in the commercials.

Huh, I thought it was the "mute that n00b" button? http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/blink.gif

While nice, I don't see how that "revolutionizes" the genre like they were saying it would.

Oh great *sigh* first they put the reloads on the shoulder buttons, instead of the jump and melee functions. Now they put anouther, likely to become key, function that probably require careful/exact timing on the face buttons http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_frown.gif ... I'm begginging to think game developers really dont like left handed gamers http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_frown.gif .

I really hope they give players the chance to completely map/customise the control styles. The options they gave you on Gears of War make the game really hard to play in single player/co-op, and near imposible to play competetively online. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_cool.gif

You find it difficult to play Gears as a leftie?

Aren't there control layouts for left-handed people anyway? I know there were (Southpaw, I think)

I'm also left-handed, but I don't think it's that awkward using default controls

Neither do I. I generally use default controls, and hardly ever have a problem with it. I think I tried Southpaw once, and quickly turned it back off.

I'm really liking the "X" button function. From the video it really seems to add to the gameplay. The BETA is going to be a lot of fun. Hopefully there will be quite a few forumers on it.

Well I've used southpaw type controls since Goldeneye on the N64, aiming on the left stick see http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif . But the problem is with Gears etc it changes the sticks around but dosen't give you the option to change the button layouts... so you have to press forward on the right stick and then try to slide your thumb from the stick on to the A button... which is really quite tricky and results in quite a lot of mistakes/delays it mingt only be fractions of a second, though sometimes more, but when it come to dodging, runnning and cover in GoW and melee in both GoW and Halo it can make the difference bettween winning a fight or dying http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_frown.gif .

I'm still really looking forward to the beat though, guess I will just need to practice more http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif . http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_cool.gif

Could you imagine the money that one could make if he or she makes a controller that is an exact replica of a brand name controller but with everything (buttons, d-pad, analog sticks) placed respectively on the other half of the controller? If this were the case, you wouldn't need to program in special "southpaw" control setups.

That would indeed be fantastic... I'd settel for the 360 dashboard being updated to allow you to completely customise the controls/button configerations for each game... it cant be that hard, can it? http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_cool.gif

I'm so putting mines in the jump pads http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/784.gif .

Though, I wonder if you can put them onto the front of tanks or warthogs and ram things.

The X button did something else in the alpha than it does in the beta. The use equipment button used to be on the back button...
