I've been playing around with the "chain entity", and found alot of really cool uses.
When I made this I didn't have the manual, and I had only used Sandbox(tm) for a couple of hours.
This is a Buggy hanging under a chopper. Fun to fly over enemies, and shoot down on them.

I connected the chain to a floating object behind the boat, this was the original idea, witch i saw in the Singleplayer Ver of Far Cry.

Hey, nice experimentation. I have a question for you. I've been messing around with the chain object too and I can't figure out how to change the length of it. Also, in the rope bridge did you swap out the model of the chain with rope, or did you use a different entity. This is my first time using an editor and it sure is fun.

Like I said, I haven't used Sandbox(tm) much, but I have found a few way to change the chains lenght and "shape".
Under the Entity Properties, click "Model", go to the \Objects\glm\shipwreck\stuff\ dir.
There you will find different types of rope and chain. Short chains, chains with hooks etc.

I was messing around with chains too; great fun!
If you really wanted to be sadistic, you could chain a dead merc behind a buggy and drag him through the dusty streets, ala Somalia. Except with a bad guy instead of a good guy.
Attaching chains is covered in the editor manual, but if you haven't read it yet, just look for the parameters "attach to" or "attach up" or something, then type in the name of the entitiy you want to attach it to. If the threshold is set to -1, you will be anchored to the floor and won't be able to move, and if you set it to 0, you can tow things around.

I'll keep looking for other options too, but I'll try out that method. Also, I've had some difficulty with attaching 2 chains together, do you simply use the chain instance names in the attachup and attachto fields of the links?

Lovegravy, your question is answered by hillemania, I attached two chains together.
I used the Long chain model, and attached those two (two long chains). I haven't found out how to attach two chains dirrectly together (I'll work some more on it today) But if u use an object as a link between the two chains you can make it as long as you want to (Look at the pic where the fishing boat is dragged, in the middle of the chain you see a bucket http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif But I'll look into a better way to make it longer. Ahhhh, so you linked the two chains together by putting something between them...
Every time I tried to link two chains together I'd end up with one rigid section and one swinging section, I couldn't get the whole chain to move properly.

That's funny about the bucket, I didn't notice it. I too used that method earlier but unfortunately used an anchor as my connector and it looked pretty goofy as it was too large. In one of the first levels of the game I did notice that there are some poles with power lines going out on a dock. They were different than chains though as they seemed to be made of several longer segments instead of the small links like the chain entity. They didn't look quite as smooth as a chain after I shot them apart, but I'm sure it's more CPU friendly, and I wonder if it allows longer lengths. Anybody else notice them?

Ok, I admit it. I'm a moron. Reading the manual about the chain-swing I can't get it even close to working. I been able to make a vertical chain that moves with the Jeep I have it associated with, but it stays vertical.
Could someone do a real basic walk through working with the chain swing? What properites to set ect. I know the AttachTo and copy name of object, but what is the AttachToUp and the AttachToPart/ AttachToPartUp values attached to it.
And say I can get it to work like the manual reads, how do you attach something to each end (even anchoring with a bucket). This is embarrassing...

I'll take a stab at writing a quick tutorial.
In your map, create the object you want the chain to be anchored to, for this example we'll use a buggy. Drag the buggy into your map and place it a little above the ground, and then name it in it's properties window "Buggy". Then create the object you want to be attatched to the other end of the chain, in this case we'll create a "dead body" entity (I think it's under the "others" subdirectory). Name the dead body "Body", and place it near the buggy, at about the same height (make sure they are a little off the ground). Now create a "Chainswing" entity (it's in the same subdirectory as the dead body entity), place it in between the buggy and the body at the same height as the buggy. Move the chain's anchor point (the end of the chain that has the xyz axis visible) so that it intersects with the back end of the buggy. This is how the game determines where to attach the chain on the buggy. Now rotate the chain on it's X axis so it is sticking straight out from the buggy. Now move the body object so it is intersecting with the end of the chain, the end sticking out from the buggy. Click on the chainswing entity and in it's properties write "Body" in the Attachto field, and "Buggy" in the AttachUpTo field. Now press Ctrl-G to test it out. That should be it. Sorry if this isn't a great tutorial, I have never written one before and don't have the editor open in front of me, so this is all from memory.

I was messing around with a giant swing last night too, but instead of a bucket, I put an inflatable raft. The chain is right in the middle of the raft so that it doesn't tip over and cause you to fall off.
Even so, when I shoot the chain to release the raft it falls faster than I do, we seperate, and I end up getting hurt from it. Ideally, I want to be able to sit in the raft, shoot the chain, and hang on for dear life as I hit the water 200' below.

With all this talk about bodies and chains, someone could make a great horror mod for this game. Think about it, you walk into a room, blood spattered on all the walls, you look up and see 5 or more dead bodies swinging from chains. That would be cool.
P.S. It would aslo be cool to see the chain as a weapon too, with the physics an all.

yeah, a chain weapon would be pretty sweet. I haven't started messing around with the modding yet but I was curious about a few things. I was curious if you can anchor more than one chain to a single object. also, can you attach AI controlled enemies to chains, instead of dead bodies?

Please PLEASE tell us how you made that rope bridge! In my map, I have two sniper towers. I want a bridge between the two, but I want it so you can shoot the bridge down. How would I go about this? Thanks for your help!

I have a question about this Chainswing thing that is not covered in the manual as far as I can tell (I haven't read it end to end, but I ran a search on the pdf and couldn't find any info on this). Has anyone figured out how to use the "num_ropes" and "rope_name" features? As I understand it, these potentially allow you to simply attach a second chainswing to the first one without adding an intermediate object attached between them. But everything I try to do to get this to work ends in failure. When I run the game the chain looks twice as long but is no longer attached to anything. Any one get this to work?

Heres a little something i did with the chain thing. I got a bunch of grunts to drive vehicles around a track pulling different things with them. Yo can see me in the inflatable getting towed around by the buggy. I funny to watch the grunts drive around and go over jumps. I could play with this editor forever...

An amazing idea just popped up in my mind. First a question:
Is it possible to add physics to rocks and such? And then attach a chain to that?
Now the idea:
Attach a chain to a boat and the other end to a really heavy rock. Then drag the rock out to sea. Would the boat go under from the weight of the rock?
I can't wait to get this game in my hands. So much I want to do with the editor!
You can add physics to any simple entity, such as a rock. If you look at my pictures youll see a tower getting draged along by a buggy. This was a simple entity that i gave physics to (i didn't make it very heavy). I'm sure that if you gave a rock physics and made it very heavy, it would pull a boat under. I've attached rocks to buggies and droped em off cliffs to watch the buggy get pulled off and over the cliff. The posibilities are endless.

I did that a few days ago.. It was verry funny to drive a boat with a 7 ton rock pulling you underwater http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif
Why I did this in the first place was because I could get the fishing boat and yacht stay balanced... Btw, does anyone know if you're able to change the centre of mass of an object ?
yeah it would be nice to change the center of mass for that tower. It likes to stay balenced upward. It is funny to watch a tower get pulled around the track however.

I have made a chainlink chain bridge. However the gaps between the 'boards' are always too far apary. I have tried the various short models for rope and chain but all the same result.

Here is how it looks when it is set up with physics turned on. Also the chains do funky things when shot, such as hanging from where the object should be instead of where it is. okay... so I was inspired by Obadja's wrecking ball... and thought... why limit oneself to one spot? Everything is about mobility nowadays right? So started work... and got this far...

I have no idea why it's doing this... any ideas? It does this regardless of the weight or model of the load. I'm pretty much stumped. I've got the (shrunken) watch tower and ladder linked to the Hemmitt (individually, it won't let me try and link ladder->tower->Hemmitt, crashes), both are rigid bodies with low weights (somewhere < 50).
Any ideas?
update: changing the ladder to "Ridgid body active=False" seemed to help... but one or more of the four loads will still tend to get "stuck" if I let them settle down, but running up and bumping them will get them to snap back into place and behave normally again...

I'v also tried the hangglider, but no luck. Had a glider on top of a tower with a longer chain attached to a pt boat down on the water.
As fo skiers, I've thought of ways to do it but haven't tried yet. possible you could attach a peice of dock to the chain and a boat and someone could stand on that. I'll try it out later.

I tried the 'paraglider on top of a tower' thing too. Even used 3 lengths of the longer chain object. Attached it to a buggy, setup a path for the buggy, and setup a proximity trigger to make the grunt get in and drive it around the path as soon as I get close to the glider. No dice, just drags the paraglider down to the ground every time. Seems to throw me off the glider too as soon as the buggy takes the slack out of the line.

In the Chain's Properties in the Rollup bar you can attach it to things. Its will say "Attach to" and "Attach up to". Type in what you want to attach it to. Also you need to change the -1s to 0s

also im thinking fo starting a mod based on action movies. not just one movie, but many. im not sure i want to go into too much detail but it would include many things from movies or similiar. hopefully not to infringe on anyone, but have parts of the maps that can resemble bits out of movies like indiana jones, mix it up with a bit of starwars and predator, maybe jurassic park, the list is endless.

I too have been messing with chains, and the physics... Some results include turning the cargo truck into a boat transport, by attaching a chain that holds the boat in place while driving.

Only problem is when unloading the boat you need to basically drive the truck into water after shooting the chain, and the boat takes a small amount of damage in transit... But I suppose in the middle of a hostile territory you won't be looking for the necessary means to unload a boat so some boat damage would be expected.

I think a bigger problem is that you have to remember physics cannot be used for most objects in multiplayer. I've tried quite a few things including a sled attached to a jeep and a raft attached to a gunboat, but none of them work in multi. Only the host sees the physics, the rest of the clients see no effects whatsoever.

I also did the boat transport thing.. 'bout a week ago or so.. My problem was that when you drove the truck to the water (I made a slope just like in most boat harbours) to release the boat, it exploded.. Also the boat took damage while driving..
Well, edited the boat and truck configuration files and now they don't explode.. Problem is that it affects all the boats & trucks :/

this is a complete guess but could you not just copy the existing config, and create a new one, paste the information and then edit it, and then save it under a different name so that you can choose, for example, the indestructable truck config for the one you don't want to explode, and use the original truck config for the others

also having problems getting the damn chopper off the ground with a buggy on its chains! seems like the heli cant lift the buggy, is this right???

AmishSlayer, a couple pages back, said that they were SUCCESSFUL at attaching the paraglider to a boat and going for a ride. There actually is a picture that I have seen (albeit down right now due to exceeding bandwidth) to show for it.
AmishSlayer, tell us how you did it? Or was that a doctored up photo?

Blueskin, I suggest trying a different chain. I used the regular chain on my jeep to drag my body(sick mind) and there was a large gap. Then, I tried a different chain and it worked perfectly. Hope this helps. Also, try to put the object being dragged above ground.

I can attach it to one thing (although the chain isn't actually attached?) but not anything else. It's a pretty jerky ride, but it works.
I slowed the speed of the other 2 jeeps so they would stay with the towing jeep (speed loss due to me being dragged). So now I like to try and take the other jeeps out with rockets and stuff.
I don't know exactly what you guys are trying...maybe you have just one small thing different from me or something and that's why it doesn't work...but I assure you mine does.

I attatched too jeeps with a chain and then made guys get in and try to go to waypoints in opposite directions. They play a kind of tug-a-war, it's quite amusing.
Has anyone figured out how to attach two chains to each other without using another object?

LOL. I just connected about 5 vehicles together and watched them plunge 300ft to their deaths. Also, another note on the pysics. Put a boat under water, it rises so fast that it gets some air when it gets to the surface, put yourself in the way and you get launched!!!

Plank? I don't know what you mean by attaching the plank to the machine gun. I'll see what I can do about uploading it. I'm not going to make any promises though, I've only tryed it out inside the editor. I haven't loaded it up ingame yet because I like being able to change stuff on the fly.

Any ideas on how to make chainswings tighter? I've tried lots of things but I haven't been able to stop the one side sagging.
EDIT: I recommend just messing with the level in Sandbox. That way if/when you die you can easily make necessary adjustments. Ex: The jeeps kept shooting me down out of my paraglider, so I pretty much made them useless. Their attack range is 1 or something.

I think attaching chains to certain parts of bodies is mostly luck...
Although when first placing the body I can attach the chain to specific areas quite easily, but after the first test of it with physics I can never get the body to reset to it's original position :\

ok, i assume u want contrsuctive criticism:
1)too man yof the the same type of tree lined up next to each other. same with rocks etc. just makes it look amateur. (my biggest problem)
2)random dead bodies that wont move in the water. looks good but they wont budge.
3)too open in some areas too close in others.
3)no grass? or was that me?

Amish, about the tilting issue you said. I've been messing with chain bridges for about 6+ hours today, and the only way I've found for the bridge to be stable is a couple of things:
1. Have the first part of the bridge (chain or stable piece of something) be LEVEL with the rest of the bridge, ie. don't make a 'hanging' bridge (do you get what I mean?).
2. Place the platforms equal length from each other, and have the chains placed in same position on each side of platform.
Ok, I feel REALLY dumb about writing that, because I just looked back into my map, and I do have a stable bridge that doesn't meet the listed criteria... but I do know that the above will work. So basically just take what I said with a grain of salt =/

Ok. I have part of the list done already (and the exact same height before physics are enabled). All the pieces of the bridge are parallel (all the same exact direction).
They're not exactly the same distance apart though. I don't see why that would be the problem though (as long as the ropes are in the same position on either side of the bridge).

I think you need to mess with the AI scripts in order for an enemy to try to pick up weapons. I seem to recall seeing a comment in one of the scripts that mentions the enemies won't pick up any weapons or items.

It works fine, but is jerky, and in using only one chain you see only a part of it... which swings around wildly... same results as AmishSlayer.
I'm sure it would work perfectly with a modified paraglider, and perhaps modified chainswing.

Thats some cool idea`s.
I was woundering How you could set that chains up to reset after a certian time after Shoting them apart like the Brigde.
EX: Some one runing across the brigde and shoot the chains to Let them fall HA! And after that It resets in a min?
All So Im Trying To Find the Ressurect option to ressurect The Choppers and Glider?
What triger has this Option?
One more thing Why do the Veicals Explode better in SandBox and not in the game?

man i love this editor, does anyone else have the texture glitch where the ground textures disappears when your a certain distance away??
only some textures do this and it doesnt seem the matter if i paint them or creat a elevation/slope mask

I'm not sure if you mean the guy who was modelling one in 3d, me, or someone else. But, I was talking about it in the past, and figured it out. The attach command was what got it working correctly and I put it together on the ground, then after they were attached (mounted machine gun and flagpole), I moved them up to the tower. There, I did the chainswing routine mentioned here.

I really need help. Could someone post a short tutorial on how to make the wrecking ball? I've tried linking, attaching(these two seem to do about the same thing) and I've grouped them. the closest I've gotten is getting the flagpole to follow the machine gun, but the chain didn't follow, the pole disappeared whenever I turned about 90 degrees, and I tried undoing to find out what I did wrong and I forgot what I did in the first place. Okay. I have to say that it is extremely tricky. I don't know the exact combination that worked, but I did find that creating the flagpole/machinegun attachment on the ground with nothing else around helped tremendously. Secondly, the settings on the flagpole - Resting-False, Rigidbody-True, RigidBody Active-False. on the MachineGun-UserPhys-False. For the params AngHlimit thru mountRadius respectively are: 0, 60, -60, 0.6, 1.1, 0.8.
Now, on the chain - AttachTo is the ball itself, and AttachtoUP is the flagpole.
Hope that helps some. My best advice is to keep trying. I must have spent 3-4 hours working on it total, before I got it right. I think I may have gotten a prefab to work. This prefab is ONLY of the flagpole and machine gun. I haven's tested it yet with adding a chainswing. You will need to go to Window, Show Database View, click on Prefabs, then click the open icon and open the .xml you just saved. Let me know how it works out. For this link to the xml file,
Right-Click and do Save As/Save Target As, otherwise it will probably open up automatically in IE.

Hmm I can't open it. It complains about "Level" has a duplicated GUID. When trying to geive prefabs away you will propably have to start a new library since everybody has "Level" already.

How to post pictures? Well, you need a domain to upload the pictures to, then click the picture Icon when writing the message, and add the url of the picture. If you don't have a domain, you can get a free one... like www.geocities.com, (http://www.geocities.com) but you have to fill out a bunch of stuff. If you want, you can e-mail me the picture, and I can add it to the forum for you.

I've got two problems trying to make a wrecking ball.. one, a flagpole that can move with the chaingun just doesn't work, the pole is just in the air. So does the chain if I skip the pole part, I move the gun but the chain itself doesn't.. if you could do a small tutorial about this, I'd appreciate it.

One thing is to make sure the actual chain overlaps with both objects it is attached to AND both objects have rigidbody enabled.

Hey, i just started with the art of "Chainswinging" today, (hell, i just starting using the editor today...hehe) and this stuff is really fun! I've got a few ideas i'd like to try out, such as hanging bases, and making big platforms swing and transport stuff.
It'd be really cool to see a huge chain-reaction of swings, that all start by cutting 1 rope or chain, hehe.

Alright, nothing special, but i thought it was kind of...cool i guess. i put a jeep on a ladder suspended between 2 towers, and when i broke 1 of the chains, the jeep would do 1 roll, and land perfectly on the ground.

Its neat the things we can think up and do with the chainswing. Somebody (maybe this thread near the beginning) mentioned a carousel type of setup but with hanging buggies from a round floor piece on a rotating pole.

Yeh I made a Lvl With A long Chain Bridge on it. Took me like 30min to do cause its a long bridge but then I added stuff like a area you walk into and then it rains and AI going to Sleep and Getting Into Chairs...
Then I made a Pig Race. If I knew How to get screen Shots I would Post it .. But It is fun watching Yourself get chased by Pigs and Then Hurling Yourself Off of Ramps and Having the pigs follow you around shooting you down. Also I made a Arena Of Pigs That Have Rocket Launchers and Tasers. Can Someone Please tell me how to post screenshots!

The problem with MP physics is packet size. In some cases adding a physicalized object is like adding a player in terms of BW. Depending on the object, it could be more like 2 or 3 players due to rotation, position, velocity etc. I thought I saw somewhere that people are having success with it, but I wouldn't hold my breath on playing an MP match with a pyramid of barrels anytime soon http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_wink.gif

If you want screenshots, press f12 when you want to take the screenshot and your picture should end up in the main farcry directory. If website hosting is a problem, try http://www.imageshack.us/, it should work well.

I've been messing with the chain swing object and have created a boat that pulls a raft this works perfect in Sandbox editor but when i create a server to host the map and join the raft no longer moves and the chain just stretches.
from what i have read i don't think the chainswing works online, is that correct?!
also i have a similar issue with a animated light beam that scans the area, the animation works perfect online but the i edited the beam in sandbox so that it was much bigger and more visable but the beam always defaults back to its original very small size!
again is this a problem for hosting these types of things online? because they both work perfect in the editor
