I am sending a partition to blue byte at the end of this month in order to complain about the black box which constantly annoys me and several others. The partition will request that blue byte release a patch or download which will cure the annoyances of the black box issue.
if you wish to have your name on this partition please send an email, stating your support and your user name on the forum,to wot_up_g@hotmail.co.uk.
all support is appreciated and hopefully we will get the desired result.

I think you will be clutching at straws to get BB to patch a game that is now 7 years old,the black box only occurs if you use NVidia 8 series,I get it,but have learned to live with it.

I know that it is a dream, I don't think that BB will do something for us and for this ****ing problem. They prefer to make benefits than to enjoy the gamers and that's pretty sad because Settlers IV is one of the best Settlers game before Ubi wasted the license.
The game is 7 years old...ok, where is the problem ?. Some old best sellers has patch 4, 7, 9 years after ! (I ever seen that). The developpers should like their game right ?
The problem occurs with Nvidia 8 and 9. (I've got a 9600GT 2gb)
To finish, we can't learn to live with it, excepted if I use an anotherer computer : that's stupide because S4 still rules over the other Settlers!
So I agree with Phil_7445 even if I don't think it will succeed, I want to try.
At the time this fault was first noticed, I believe that there was discussion between BlueByte and the makers of the graphics cards, both denying that it was their problem. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_frown.gif

thanks for the replies and glad to hear I have some support on this....I will send the partition if I get at least 10 people (I know this is a low amount really but we have to at least try and get to blue byte). If the partition fails and no patch is released then at least we will have tried.
thanks again for the supporthttp://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif and hopefully something will be done.

Hi not sure if you all recognize my nickname.. I used to play this game a lot a while back.
I first noticed this blackbox problem several years ago while using an old nVidia GeForce TNT card..
There was a fix for it on an old settlers forum/mapbase which is no longer in existance.
The fix involved fixing the problem for win2000 installations (this was before XP came out)
I've since gone through several nVidia cards with only one the GeForce2 not having the problem.
My XFX brand GeForce 8600 GT had the problem and I just learned to live with it.. but when I had that card I ALSO had WinXP and an AMD..
Now I got a bit stronger AMD CPU and an even more powerful video card in the ASUS 9600 GT 512mb
While waiting for this card to arrive I had to use my ASUS' motherboard's onboard video card which was a ATI 1250 (ASUS M2A-VM motherboard)
This ONBOARD video .. by ATI did NOT have the black box problem.
It was the same exact installation that was on a previous motherboard (Everex Impact) with the older 8600 Nvidia.. which THAT had Nvdia onboard gfx.. the 6500 (where the problem did not occur)
This is really insightful as it shows that the problems do in fact lie within the Nvdia 8 and 9 series of cards.
Each one of these installations has a way to add a program to use its own individual settings... as opposed to the global settings.
If I can only figure out what to enable and/or what to disable which would match the ATI's settings.. then no emulation program would be needed.
One more thing to note.. when I got a new harddrive.. I did format about 20 gigs for win98 under the old file system as opposet to NT format.
I havent tried to uninstall settlers and put it there yet.. but I may try that next.. then go and try to adjust some settings via the Nvidia control panel.
At least this is a way to isolate the problem and let you all experient on what works and what doesn't work.
One side note.. you must hit "use or save" from that control panel and close it out or s4.exe will not stay the active screen.
So change a setting then run the game.. test by loading.. etc.. repeat process until I guess one of us finds the "culprit" that's causing the black box.
I suspect it might be a memory allocation thingy.. or maybe even the partition the game is on needs to be old FAT32 rather than NT.
Sure would be nice to solve it ourselves

If you've never seen it, its a time machine of old internet sites, and if you're talking about Elly's map base and forums there are some archived pages from it, so you might be able to hunt on there for the original forum fix.
