Hello, I'm new to this modding thing. My friend told me something about .lua and .pak files on my computer and says that they dont work for some reason. He told me try to type ".lua" in a wordpad doc and try to type ".pak" in a zip file on my com. Getting frustrated, I could not understand what was going on, because he said it was supposed to open into a txt format, but it did not. It just asked which program to open it with.

Do I need to dl something or install farcry again? Am I missing some program for it? Can anyone tell me how to use .lua and .pak?

Notepad will open .lua files and Winzip (or similar) will open .pak files. If its not working, I don't know what's going on for you without more information. Also, this is just for browsing the files already in your FCData folder....eg. textures in Textures.pak. As for making a mod, I'll let someone else answer. I'm just learning about it.

right mouse click the .lua you want to view/edit then selct "open with" from the list and then select Notepad.

Same with .pak but select your zip progam not notepad. (you may have to browse for this)

A word of caution, editing the lua or pak files may lead to you being kicked from PB enabled servers and potential banned...

If you want to edit them make sure you only change copies in your mods folders, not the originals....

Lua's are for stuff like parameters... eg. weapon damage, vehicle acceleration, etc...
Nerd++ stuff, essentially!!! Not my bag... http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/35.gif

Pak file are (generally) for storing object, textures, sounds and suchlike...
Basically they are (storage) zip files renamed to ".pak"
This is where the modellers play!

As a rule ALWAYS make copies somewhere outside your FC folder, or risk being called a cheaterer!

If you are making maps/levels, modified .pak files are quite safe inside your own map's folder...
Change anything inside your FCData folder & it's re-install time...!!!

Also... if you do any SandBox stuff, there's a good chance that your FCData>effects.pak will be overwritten (without even asking ya...!!!)
Keep a copy of this file somewhere & replace the corrupted/overwritten version when ur finished playing!!!
(It can also be dl'd from the SpringCreatures site!)
It'll get you kicked (speaking from loadsa experience!!!)
It's not a ban thing, but it's annoying! http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/53.gif

Have fun playing...
