Questions about AI and Escorting

Okay so I have been building a few Bomber mission Co-ops and I try to set Escort points as Secondary objectives(Primary being Destroy Ground at Target)They seem to be working fine within reason of course.
I have been using Normandy map, but today I thought I would undertake the PTO within a similar scenario, well lets say I failed abysmally as I couldnt figure out how to make the planes take off from a carrier(anyone care to answer that thats great!)
BUT I decided to poke thru a stock Co-op to see what I could learn and in PF Co-op Mis.1 I saw something I couldnt explain but looks like it would help with my escort.

A flight of D3A1's and A65M's take off from IJN carrier but are tied together with the crosshair icon(green crosshairs is on the D3A1 waypoints directly tied by a line to the A65M waypoints) this proceeds thru its entire flight

So what is this? and how is it done?(looks to me like an Escort or Defend target but there is nothing indicated anywhere

Carrier takeoffs require you to use the set button on the takeoff point and select the ship your taking off from, same for landing.

What you saw is the set button working between aircraft. In that instance it makes the fighters fly close escort over top of the bombers.

The targets are merely for scoring, not actual AI control.

Yes I had just figured out about the Set button for Fighter Escorts
But big thank you for explaining the Set button and Carriers that was rather odd setting a takeoff point only to have complete chaos right after start http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/11.gif
