View Full Version : Questions/comments after first patrol

Well, not actually after the first patrol, since I'm still at sea with two Eels.

I'm playing with GWX (2.0 I think, as I didn't update) and it's just a blast! Play time is limited though, so it's mostly just my weekends where I can imagine to be a kaleun, making the atlantic a dangerous place.

Some highlights:

I had patrolled my assigned area for 24 hours, but didn't get much in the way of contacts. I then moved to the (quite shallow) area between Scapa Flow and Lerwick and got a lot of single merchant contacts (both reports and my own findings). I'm now at a patrol tonnage of about 17k with no casualties or damage, which seems a decent first patrol and historically not too far off the mark.

I went in to take a look at the Lerwick subbase while I was in the neighbourhood. Snuck in at night, decks awash and very slow speed, passing two DDs on the way in and out, without them spotting me. Unfortunately, there was nothing worthwhile in the harbour, so I just imagined BdU sent me to gather intel in British submarine operations.

I like the crew fatigue thingy now. I have four officers, so during cruise mode two can rest while two can stand watch/be at the helm. I also keep just enough crew so that when I'm submerged I can fill the engine room/command center and radio room and have the rest in their bunks.
I have got some questions though:
In my next patrol I want to eliminate the map update setting. Does this cover my own boat? I find it unrealistic to know exactly where I am and would like to try some realistic navigation, taking position at regular intervals, only when it's not overcast/stormy etc. I keep a written log, so keeping track of course changes and things like that shouldn't be too hard.

Is it possible to turn of the 'erase all' button in the nav map? I absolutely hate clicking that one on accident.

Currently I still use auto-targeting, but I'm also thinking a bit about manual targeting, but with help of my WO. Can you set up your four tubes to certain, differing, degrees/angles/speeds ahead of time then fire them all at once, e.g. in a convoy attack? What is a good way to get range readings? I don't like the magically accurate readings the WO gives and tried the mast angle thing, but that seems too hard/inaccurate.

That's it for now. Just like to thank the great community and modding teams, everyone here is (I think) a nice person, willing to help out and the time and energy gone in to GWX alone are worth many thanks.

Greetings,

Geert

1) It will remove everything, except your sub. It does, however show your location, but nothing else.

You have to manually draw bearings. I always do it, it;s more fun that way.

2) No idea, I hope a modder can answer that one http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_frown.gif

3a) No, you can't pre-set the tubes. However, you can fire off all 4 in a matter of about 30 seconds at 4 different targets if you know what you're doing (practice)

3b)Wait for the sonar to mount on your boat (in a few years). Till then, use the mast/angle thing.
I found out that you can actually PAUSE the game and still move the range-finding horizontal crosshair. Very handy in rough seas. Often, your speed, AoB and range mistakes cancel out. Then again, sometimes they become worse. It's a judgment thing. If the ship is in front of you and you got 2500 meters, you probably did something wrong http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_wink.gif

Thank you for the quick answer, Foehammer.

I see. Is there a way where I can make the sub icon disappear too? I don't think many kaleuns had GPS that showed them exactly where they were at all times. I want to be able to CTRL-click to the position of my boat to simulate reading stars/sun to know my position, but nothing else. Is that possible?

As a matter of fact, there IS a mod somewhere that does exactly that. You have to measure star height and all. I looked around but can't find it anymore. Anyone else know where it is?

I don't go to uboot.realsimulation.com or whatever site due to massive amount of spyware and things.

[edit] actually nevermind, i think this (http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/showthread.php?t=113975) may be it!

That'd be a little too complex right now, I think. I just want the sub icon removed from the navigational maps. I can use the ctrl-left click to simulate getting reading, wouldn't want to do it myself.
