Spitfire Vb flown by Squadron Leader J E 'Johnnie' Johnson and the rest of Red Flight, 610 (County of Chester) Squadron as of 19th August 1942, flying from RAF West Malling as part of Operation Jubilee, The 'Dieppe' invasion.
Red flight consisted of Johnson, flying EP254-B, his wingman, Flt Sgt S C Creach (EP198-H), Plt Off L A Smith (EP342-S) and Plt Off Wright (EP235-F)
610 Sqn flew as mid cover for the invasion, and during this operation they had their first encounter with the (soon to be much feared) FW190.
