Ok, so everybody has had a chance to play SHIII & SHIV.
Given the standard of modding, please take into account where the guys have had to start from, done to both versions and the results produced...

Tough choice between Cold War and WWI, but my vote went to Cold War.

I wanna play SHIV!!!!

First World War I say. That is what started it all, and the Germans did come up with some good craft. I am just debating building their "Projekt 50" Submarine. 10 Torpideo tubes! 4 bow, 4 stern and 2 swivel!! http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/blink.gif

It was actually BIGGER than the Type XXIs of WW2!! http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_eek.gif

I want one! http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/inlove.gif

Voted WW1, simply because it would be interesting and a challenge = earlier technology. Besides I once tried a modern sub game, where you had to control a a nuclear sub, don't recall the name of it, which probably is, because it wasn't that good = boring...

I think World War 1 has been ignored too long! There is a real opportunity here for a sim that would both enlighten and entertain.

It seems to me that the game should be based on the German side, like SH3: ......mainly because of the variety of interesting boats employed by the German Navy.

There were 29 different types of U-Boats employed during the War by the German Navy, ranging from small coastal boats, to minelayers, to the big "U-Cruisers".

These "U-Cruisers" , as typified by the U-139 shown here, were large, capable boats. They were designed to search out and sink enemy shipping, where ever it might be: ......A task made easy by their 12,000+ NM range!

http://i134.photobucket.com/albums/q84/klcarroll/U139.jpg

The performance of this class of boat was also surprisingly good: They could make 15.8 knots on the surface, and 7.6 knots submerged. They could dive to a depth of 75 meters (250 feet), which is as good as a U.S. WWII "Porpoise" class boat!

These big boats were equipped with four forward torpedo tubes, and two stern tubes; ....and they carried a total of 24 torpedoes to keep those tubes well fed!

For surface work, these boats mounted TWO 150mm (5.9 inch) deck guns! These potent guns fired a 100 pound high explosive projectile, and had a maximum range of 15,860 yards! The guns were considered to be the primary surface weapon, as indicated by the fact that the U-139 class boats carried 980 rounds of 150mm ammo!

If you're thinking that some of these specs sound familiar; .....You're right!! These are the boats the U.S. Navy was thinking about when they designed the Narwhal Class! (....And YES! ....the 150mm guns were VERY similar, performance wise, to the U.S. 6"/53 mounted on the Narwhal!)

WWI is the way to go!

I have to admit I'm torn....on one hand, I was really looking forward to the WWI U-Boat simulator that was supposed to be coming out (whatever happened to that? Last I heard of it was a year ago).

On the other hand, I'd really like an update of Silent Hunter III....though I'd be really miffed if we were limited to the Allied Submarine fleets. Limiting the player to German U-Boats would be bad too, but I've always been more interested in them than their allied counterparts.

I might be the only one, but I'd love to be placed in command of a Shchuka or Akula class submarine for the USSR's Navy--even if it only meant conducting missile drills and running patrols. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif The thought of being able to visit the various compartments inside, and with a visible crew in the style of SHIII or SHIV, really brings a tear to my eye.

Yes, I know, I'm a dreamer...

WW1 would be great, never done before etc.

But WW2 again, but from the Allied side (British/Dutch/Polish etc) side would be great also I guess..

My Fellow Kaleuns,
Guys a few days ashore while U301 has her prop' reset. Hell of a noise at 80 meters!
Now to the point: As you can see the vote was 41% evens for The North Atlantic/Med and WWI.
I am going to take this result to UBISoft and try and get a discussion going with them about SilentHunterV and what most people want from it.
So if you would like to make a point to them or have something further to say on this matter please leave it here.
I am going to show them this thread so they will see what you have to say, be nice!

Given that SH5 will be totally new, I vote for WW1- but don't limit it to the German side. It should also be playable as RN at the least, which would make scenarios as Dardanelles/Marmara action against Turkish shipping possible, or patrols in the Baltic against German shipping. Throw in a French and Austrian sub (or even Russian) for even more variety if possible.
As for playable IJN or Allied subs, that could be taken care of with an SH4 expansion pack. IL2 is multinational so it isn't impossible.

I voted for WWI as I think it would be quite interesting.

Cold war....eh. Been there, done that so to speak. It was not all that intersting. As technology advances, it becomes harder and harder to avoid your enemies weapons. You also end up not having to deal with things that they used to have to deal with. A nuclear powered sub doesn't have to worry about fuel.

There is also the fact that the common theme we have in these sims: A shooting war.
A Cold War sim would be nothing more than intel gathering, unless they dwelved into the realm of fantasy and have a "Cold War" turn into a "Shooting War"

So to me, the appeal would be something where you'd have to think a lot harder and learn more to survive. So WWI appeals to me.
Having a modern sub, who's onboard computers will figure out every possible fire control solution so I simply push a button does not.
