Hi Folks,
is any volumetric fog planned for the interior? On the screenshots the sub interior looks so clean. Would be great if some dynamic fogs are created and that it would look like in "Das Boot". Fog and moisture http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

My question is this - will the Ubi multiplayer lobby be improved to show how many players are currently in a game. At the moment, unless someone else is in the main lobby, you have no idea if other games are in progress. If you want to play with someone else, unless you have previously arranged it, you have to sit in the main lobby clicking refresh (or host a game) and wait, wait some more, and then wait even more. If the main lobby showed that a game was in progress, at least you would know that other players were around and you might get a game (provided the game wasn't password protected). I really struggle finding SH4 games online, and even joined a couple of clans to find other players, but one of these pretty much only plays SH3 and the other disbanded, so I now have no-one to play with (unless I get lucky on a Friday/Saturday night http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_wink.gif ).

- Will SHV simulate ocean flows or streams that make the uboat drift away from position or make it harder or easier to move? Gibraltar for exsample has two streams at diffrent depths. One goes into the mediterranian sea, the other one goes out.

Here is another example of how this can be used. In the movie Das Boot, they used this current flow to sneak through the Strait of Gibraltar.

Hello , Do you think is possible to coordinate the flags , the smoke of the chimney and the smoke of the burnings ships to make all them pointing to the same direction and correct this SH4 bug/problem
Update : Actually the problem is that the flag allways aim at the back of the ships and never change direction even when the ship is already sunk under the water surface

- Will it be possible to give injured personel over to milk-cows? Is it possible to transfer personel from milk-cows to ones own boat?
- Will there be random technical problems due to sabotage or just bad luck?
- Will there be a real editable notebook in the commanders quarters? It would be nice just to write down some things in own words, like a war diary or log.
- Will the amount of coast ships, like fishing trawlers, ferries or other be realistic?
- Will it be possible to spot more cities and harbors (or coast defense lines) than only the own u-boat-bases or enemy ports? Will I be able to spot land-traffic (war related or civil) on the coasts?
- Will there be external damage due to very bad weather conditions? Thinking of losing paint on the hull or losing the protective shields of the AA-guns because of strong waves and wind?
- When the uboat-war at the US-coast happened, the US also send out civil patrol boats and civil small airplanes. Will those be in the simulation too?
- Will clouds cast shadows onto the water and the boat? (would look great I think)

Small question: Besides setting the fire solution manually i assume we'll also be able to open the torpedo doors manually?
I know i could be asking a dumb question here but i'm not 100% sure.I vaguely remember that not being able to manually open the torpedo doors in SH4 was one of the things that annoyed me. Although i must admit i gave up on SH4 quite quickly and went back to SH3.

Hi Kaleuns,
in the SH3 it was able to cross the dateline but on high sea, only.
Near land or island the game crashes.
After passing them I had to save the situation and after starting again the new scenery Land was to be seen.
What about this bug in the coming SH5???

HI Kaleuns,
will the producer bring out the old odd Lego-Coasts in SH5 further.
Lego-Coasts that means:
There was one angle at the coastlines, only (90°).
This was a great handicap by the good SH3/4 Modders.
It would better be to realize 30° and 45° Lines for the worldwide Coast-Lines! http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/25.gif

Will the time it takes to reload the deck gun be dependent on where the ammo is stored? (for example, once the "ready" rounds on deck have been fired, will it take longer to bring up ammunition stored below decks?)
Will the watch rotation system be modeled after the way it was really done in the Kriegsmarine? (three 4-hour watches from 0800 to 2000 hours, and two 6-hour watches from 2000 to 0800 hours).
Will the sonarman continue to (unrealistically) man the hydrophone unit while the U-boat is on the surface, even though in reality the hydrophones weren't manned while on the surface?

The FOOD RESERVE factor was a serious factor in U-Boots during WW2. In SH, SH2, SH3 and SH4 there were fuel reserve, compressed air reserve, oxygen reserve and battery reserve factors, but there was no food reserve factor, I think this was a big problem for realism, what do you think about this, do you see this as a problem, if you do, are you going to fix this situation?
And I want to this game to be a user friendly like SH3, and do not need to extreme system configuration like SH4... Please...

Quick question,
I don't know if the technology now a days allows proper buoyancy to be modeled in to games yet.
So, my question,
Can we expect to see more realistic buoyancy model in SHV , specially during rough seas? (staying afloat on top of, riding the wave, instead of cutting through them like in the previous versions)

Hi,
Using the Outside-view in SH4 the view-direction was to north, allways. So I had to move them to the ship forward.
It would better be, to have a look to the ships heading generally.
This will give us a better orientation outside.

Will game play be controlled by the same type of layers as in SH3? Will there be a mission editor included in the SH5 package?
It is true that most of the Multiplayer groups do not spend much time outside of their own forums. The group I am in has written its own cooperative campaign files and will need a Mission Editor to be able to adopt SH5. We have only just begun 1942 so there is a lot of war left to fight.

When you were depth charged in SH3, you were fine one second and the next second, the "game over" screen came up. Will there be a more "Das Boot" type of damage in SH5, i.e. a slower sequence of events when your sub is damaged? So you can try to save the sub or experience a slow, agonizing destruction whilst trying to fight flooding etc?
Also, will the repair times be more realistic? In SH3, damage could usually be repaired in less than 5 minutes.

Hey there, I got three questions.
1. In SH3, (And Maybe 4, I forgot) When ever a crew mate died, or got wounded, they just disappeared into thin air. Is this getting changed?
2. In SH3 you had the option to bury your crewmates at sea, being that this game is about the crew, and interacting with them, will we be able to actually witness this event?
3. In reality, the Allies were at the breaking point in 1941-42, being that the U-boats had stopped so much shipping. With this "Critical Campaign", can your actions actually win the war for Germany?

In Silent Hunter 5 will some compartments be sealed in emergencies? Example, the bow is damaged enough to flood the bow torpedo room, does your crew in that room evacuate (or die) and seal off that compartment, making you unable to use that room but still able to get to safety.

An evacuation possibility would be great. In real live it was possible to leave the uboat after sinking to the ground in shallow waters. That would result in giving up the uboat and to survive and continue a career or become a POW. Will there be such an option?

Hello there,
I hated the bugs also in SH4! I think when you buy something it should be allready finished like when you buy a couch or a bicycle.
I would love to see a option to change the visibility underwater as i believe watching more then 15m at 30m depth is really unrealistic in the North Sea.
I also would love to do more when I come in an out of the harbour, like contacting harbour control over the radio and ask permission and getting a dock appointed to you for example (I think this is really easy to create, just text menu's like in Flight Simulator).
If you are out at sea, would it be possible to have a random current (which will result in a drift). Mayby just a little bit? I might only have to be simulated on the u-boat and not the other boats. This might make navigation a little bit more interesting. I loved what the modders tried to do with SH3 with the star navigating and dead reckoning technics. But this might be a little bit to much for the general public as they all buy Modern Warfare 2 and just want to shoot somebody. You simply cannot sell a game by advertising you can do dead reckoning. I hate the general public!
Somebody mentioned oil stripes on the surface when your u-boat is damaged. That would be cool and easy to make i guess.
I think the fact that we get to play with german u-boats again is great and i think SH3 is still the best (mayby the music helped a little bit for the first days of playingtime). For me it was like reading the best book ever!

Hi, I'd love to know more about the brave AI crew, with successful missions they get better and I can help them evolve. Do they have levels? can all of my crew improve or only the officers? Will I have to fill up a boat with rooks just to specialize some into my dream officers?

Also, can you bottom the boat? I tried to do this when severely damaged to wait until my pursuers leave and then repair. This seemed to be an alright tactic most of the time in SHIII but in IV the boat just rocked left and right until either it was so damaged that it flooded or so loud that my pursuers bombed me.

I think there is something that MUST be added to SH5!
Its easy to make and it WILL be really appreciated by future players.
Write notes inside the submarine and write the submarine history!
The history of the last submarine would also be appreciated.
Also, Being able to write things and draw it on a Torpedo!!
Like, if one of your crew member is dead from a Depth charge dropped from a destroyer, when you would go to periscope depth to attack him back, you would draw something for the dead crew member on the torpedo before firing it!
It may look useless for some people but it WILL be appreciated and it will be easy to make. And people like me will appreciate it!
Ubi would use something like "paint" or something so it would be easy to draw what we want. And it would be used on the map too!
It would be awesome to write a note on the Tiefenmesser (I don't remember the name in english omg) "max depth 210m"!
I almost forgot, In sh4 I wasn't EARING the ship sinking. In Das boot you clearly ear that the crew ear the ship sinking from 1000m.
But in sh4 I don't! so I guess a little fix would be appreciated.

Hi GKane.
I only have one question.. and I think its a pretty important one.
The Official Video of Silent Hunter V we have seen so far.. Is it actual gameplay, or just an introductory movie scene like that of ShIII? When I first saw ShIII's intro, I taught it was actual gameplay.. and later I was dissepointed.

Does the crew in SHV talk a little bit more "smoother" than in SHIV?
How does the crew behave when we are not directly talking to them? Maybe someone is asleep, or someone play cards, just talking, or of course, doing their tasks they have to do in a U-boat.
In previous SH games, like SHIV they talk kinda "stiff"... Let me give you an example: Enemy merchant spotted.... Bearing... 1..2..5.... Long Range! For those who have played SHIV I think recognize this... Or myabe they don't think this is a problem, anyway, it's just a question http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

some questions:
What can the captain (the player) do if there is no enemy in sight (no action)?
Will there be the ability to run in the Uboot? If there is a ship spotted you don't want to walk to the commandroom in normal walking but running ( let's say hold shift to sprint?)
If there is action at the sea and the player set the Uboot on fastest dive will the sailors ran to the front of the Uboot? (like in the trailer)
When will the silenthunter5 site be upgraded? with new screenshots, info,video? It's still only the trailer but I would love to see some orther things! http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

On SH3 and SH4 wrecks are only 'scenery'.
Is possible malfunction of uboat when collision with wrecks on shallow water?
Is attack on surface possible at early years of war?
Sensitivity of visible sensor in SH3 and SH4 is determined by a solid range with a correction values (fog, waves). Is another method implemented, dynamically depended on environmental conditions?
(On SUBSIM somebody proposed “contact” detection as comparing the pixel colours of backround and "place where is uboat" similar to humans).
How is “no fuel” problem solved on SH5?
Is friendly forces rescue possible (like at SH 1) if no fuel or no crew?
(crew and fuel can be lost during attack)
Enemy ship can attack uboat by collision, but (in SH3) if enemy hits at conning tower the uboat doesn't take damages.
It is solved on SH5?
Historical diaries uboat's commanders show us malfunction soon after patrol start.
Are random damages met after patrol start like:
- non precise repairs in shipyard
- sabotage during stay in shipyard (spies, enemy agents)
I know that from time to time uboats send its position (BdU request) and Allies broke Enigma codes to know the uboat location.
Is location request implemented and after breaking enigma code hunting for uboats?
On SH3 / SH4 we have command 'send information about contact / send information about convoy'...
Are negative consequences after returning to the port for commander if player send any messages (radio is not destroyed)?
What about stones and rocks on bottom of sea?
Is it still "scenery" like SH4 or real object causing damages and yelling of the desk (source of sound) when sub is too close to the bottom?
On book "Last uboat" author write about uboats that have put at the bottom of sea and could not return to surface. Is something similar implemented?
I read that SH5 allows decide about kind of engine on surface.
Are both depth rudders available for player's control too?

Quote: Will we see water flooding the submarine or fire in 1st person view?
Yes you will, even more you will have to manage the flooding.
Will you have the chance also to help yourself help the fire out and based on your ability make it better(fire out it faster)or worse( fire it out slower than AI average)?

I have some questions:
1) will you be able to send some of your crew to their families and do a mission with other crewmembers so the first ones will have opportunity to decrease they fatique and increase a lot the morale?
2) will you be able to use the wolfpack tactic(if is the right name)?.The uboats stayed in contact with doenitz and reported to him the convoys and then he organized to send about 5 uboats to one convoy to crush it.So in least will we be able to see other uboats cooperating with you?(it will alsobecome harder as English found the greman decoder so they knew everything and could set ambushes)and will you be able to know the position of other uboats?
3) if possible number 2 tactic, they often attacked at dark night in surface so not to be detected by sonar,They were almost invisible becaus ethey were very small. So i want to aske if tehr ewill be inproved the DETECTION SYSTEM, so not to set a given Maximum range not detected but make it more human and also make when detected and not illuminated at night to be difficulty spotted by the othe rships(except of the one that detected you) or give at leats some time based on the ship crew(like warship detect faster than merchants) as they had humans.It also become harder as they put the radar on enlgish destroyers progressesly( but canadian didnt had and were rookies)

- Ich möchte als 1. Ing. die Ruder vorne/hinten

I haven't bothered reading all 15 pages, I just noticed that this question wasn't listed in the original post:
Will the sonarman have more to say? In previous games, all he could do was report new contacts as they appeared and "lock on" to one and keep reporting it's bearing indefinitely. Can the sonarman be more "humanlike" and tell me things i need to know like "it's coming closer, slowing down". "another destroyer at bearing...", "depth charges in the water to our starboard", "It's sinking!" etc.?
Let's face it, in an underwater world, the sonarman is your eyes. It's quite important that he can tell me these things. Situational awareness is very important if you play at 100% realism, and it feels strange that I have to put on the headphones myself all the time just to figure out where the enemy is.

I have a realism suggestion .. I made a forum about this in 'general' but since you're asking for all suggestions here, I will repost:
~~~
I'm a fan of map contact updates.. here's why, a skipped would usually have a chart officer no..? Conning tower would call out a contact, bearing and estimated range to target, or sonar, and the chart man would maintain all of this information somewhere.. I don't really want to have to do ALL of that myself, all the time so I don't play with contact updates off...
HOWEVER, it's pretty annoying how 'dead accurate' these always are.. radar and visual contacts are spot on down to the meter, and sonar updates give you a 'line length' to the target, which really is unrealistic .. the sonar man would only know bearing, how loud the contact was and a few other things (approaching, moving away, increasing speed etc)
It would be nice if the 'gods eye view' could be disabled, but the 'charting officer' (I don't know what he was really called) could be kept turned on ..
IE create a degree of uncertaininty to map contacts.. radar contacts would be less accurate, visual contacts as well esp at distance.. exact bearing, distance and speed should be subject to a modifier that makes them a little less accurate, with accuracy becoming greater as distance closes, and weather is more fair.
Sonar especially .. I should get a 'bearing line' to the contact, and a 'best guess' at it's distance but it should not be dead dead accurate as it is in SH4
I can pretty much setup calculate an absolutely perfect AOB, bearing, range and speed with just 2 or 3 sonar plots in SH4 which really isn't realistic, but like I said, I don't want to have to maintain all of these myself
another request on the same vein: it's pretty annoying that the sonar op will not sound off on 'unknown' contacts that are detected.. this sucks for when i'm running in time compression .. often times these 'unknown' contacts are *very obviously* ships, but just haven't been ID'd as 'warships' or 'merchants' .. it would be nice if the sonar man would call out 'unknown contact' for something that is obviously another ship
just some suggestions .. hope to see these implemented, but i'll still play your game if they aren't http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif lol
They already have a deadline set, as with any of the past releases. I think Ubisoft should do away with deadlines and just let the Dev Team finish the game instead of releasing it 1/2 completed as they have done with the last 2 SH releases. I don"t think setting a deadline makes them any more money than if they just let them do their work and do it right. The Dev Team is still going to continue to work on the project, and produce some patches for the initial release, so why not just let them take their time and release it as a finished product such as a console game. But then who am I to think such nonsense, a paying customer or something ? http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-very-happy.gif
Looking at all the Silent Hunter games we see that each part has an interesting solutions for multiplayer game:
SH2: the host can choose the weather and time of mission (independent from mission's parameters), so the same mission can be played with thousands different conditions...
SH3: simple and stable connections between the players through the UBI.COM server
SH4: the "random" missions are a great idea of multiplayers games
Can we expect in SH5 all of these great advantages of mutliplayer mode known on previous versions of SH, such as choosing weather conditions, stable and simple connection and possibility of generate random missions?
1. You already confirmed that flooding will be visible in the interior of our uboat.
What about one of the other greatest hazards aboard any sea vessel, fire and smoke ?
2. Will we get a "abandon ship" option ?
Eating canned foods, helping with the potato harvest and digging tunnels for a few years is better than being mercilessly shot to pieces you know ? http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif
3. Will the new missions introduced with SH-4 (Recon photos, inserting a spy) return with SH-5 ?
If yes, will we also see the spy aboard ?
See him walk to the ladder and climb out of the boat when we reach the mission area and stuff ?
Now that we have can walk about inside the sub etc...
I'm wondering If we can see the crew die? Will we see them get locked in a flooded compartment and drown while banging on the door?
Will we see a crew member be killed by an aricraft's machine guns and slump into the sea from off the deck?
Will we see a shell pierce the sub and kill a crew member, seeing it rip through him and having his corpse stay where he fell instead of just slowly vanishing?
If so will their deaths be ragdoll?
Highly unlikely IMO...unless they give the game an adult rating which in effect would restrict potential sales considerably.
Beautiful screens- looks like a major step forward for submarine sims!
One question- I've always thought that the water/object interface (bow wave, wake, waves breaking over the decks etc) was the weak point in the graphics of the SH series- any plans to improve it beyond what's in the screen shots?
Thanks!
It's a shame, it would be amazing and would be extreamly immersive. Excluding blood and gore, deaths of crews doesn't mean an instant adult rating. Even PG games have deaths in them. I'm not saying anything overly gory, just them collapsing to the ground in ragdoll would be enough.
It'll really be immersion breaking If all of a sudden a guy we are talking to just vanishes into thin air and we are just told 'so and so has died'.
=/
I suppose the obvious question following that is how will SH5 simulate the deaths of crews?
yet they pump out games like call of duty, battlefield, crysis, where you shoot people and some games where you run around with chainsaws hacking up zombies but we cant have realistic deaths in a simulation... maybe we should re lable the game as a fantasy game then we could have all the crap we want... just another reason this country is going down the tubes... to many people are afraid of being sued from their little timmy seing a lil blood... gotta keep everything politically correct and safe for our innocent little teenagers....
I have a question. In SH3 I found it hard to identify the flags on shipping - the flag texture would appear to drop behind the flag mesh, or the base texture would be drawn in front of the flag texture. Come to think of it, this might have been due to my ATI graphics card. But is it possible to identify the nationality of ships by their flags at a distance (through the scope or UZO) in the SHV engine?
Player's signatures in multiplayer mode is a good idea, but in both previous parts of SH have their disadvantages:
# In SH3 player can turn on signatures when he wants. This is a good solution, but the player knows where are other players, their torpedoes, etc. - it is problem on 'real level' matches.
# In SH4 the signatures can be enabled only from the game menu. It's also a good solution, but player cannot turn on signatures when he is killed to follow / look other players in game, because he cannot locate them (or turn off when play).
The best solution is mix of these methods in SH5 (turn off for a live player, turn on only for the dead), and select one of three types of signatures (if you want / only killed / no signatures) by host to set game.
Are you planning to implement something similar to SH5?
Hello Gkane and friedns, I have a forum to sh3, sh4, sh5 and sh3 sub vs sub. I think there are greats clans and foros to friends that we like play son Submarine vs Submarine. When we enter on UBI there are very servers for sub vs sub. I and very, very peoples players to UBi think tah are good in sh5 have a modality sub vs sub. For we is very nice and fun. We need make maps exclusive for this modality. But if new version are ready for it is very good for all. Is only a sugerence.
In real in hot waters (f.e. Mediterranean) all steam propelled torpedoes (and uboat too) at night produces high phosphorescence wake which can be observed by enemies. Will be implemented this effect on SH5?
The galley hatch is modeled, but the ladder is not mounted since we understand it was not standard practice to have it in place for normal operations.
Will we be able to use the ballast independantly from the dive planes ?
Good point!
If it would be possible to switch the red/white light manually it should be only in the control room and not in the rest of the boat, because it wouldn't make sense! Red light makes less light come out of the hatch and prepares the eyes for darkness. But the rest of the boat needs FULL light to operate the uboat properly.
PS.: It would also look really cool to see the red control room from the normal illuminated rooms (like "serious business in the control room").
I wonder if it has to do with where the yaw point is located. If the bow is where a turn takes place, then I can see the aft end of the sub/ship sliding to where it should end up. If the yaw point is in the center or at the rudders, then yes, it should be fixed.
Hello GKane,
Didn't see anything addressed about sub vs. sub competition for online multiplayer in SH5. Would like to request this and stress its importance in popularity, as it is a very significant part of online play even today for SH3. SH4 didn't seem to take this into account as well as SH3 does. If you look online today, you'll see a good portion of the servers (maybe 1 out of every 3) are specifially dedicated for this purpose. There are about (6) silent hunter 3 clans that were established based on sub vs. sub play alone. Can you please let me know whether this will be feasible? Doesn't seem as if it would be too difficult to add-in, even at this stage.
Additionally, I can tell you first-hand that there are hundreds of players that ONLY play sub vs. sub mulitplayer competition and I think this is a good part of the reason SH3 is still thriving online today. One important thing to take into account (that SH4 did not)..is that players need to be able to maneuver in shallow waters for sub vs. sub play and not "wreck" their boat immediately upon hitting the sea bed (SH3 has a flat ocean surface as you know, and let's you scrape it with minimal damage)...but rocks on the sea floor may be an obstacle (no pun intended). Players need to be able to manuever below the surface in shallow waters to avoid opponents torps, canon fire, etc... and with rocks and such, this may be an issue for sub vs. sub play. Personally, I think SH3's long success online is party due to this competitive option. I know SH5 will be an outstanding single person game and would like to see it also be a great multiplayer game in every regard. Hope this all makes sense. Please try to address this question, thank you.
Re: Steering.
The stern does not follow the bow on a turn, same as the back wheels on your car do not follow the front ones around a corner.
The reason a vessel turns is because the rudder forces the stern away from the bow's track, thus forcing the vessel to point in another direction. Simple High School geometry. If the stern followed the bow, the vessel would never turn, unless you have bow thrusters of course.
To demonstrate, have your car up close against a wall, put it into reverse and then try and steer hard away from the wall. A car in reverse behaves much like a vessel on the water going forward. It's one of the reasons we don't have rear steering on cars.
Hope that helps.
When turn on the water the ship have a circular pathway and the stern follow the bow
The UBISOFT Ships do not have a normal circular pathway when turning , the wake of the UBISOFT Ship have a kink and therefore is not normal circular
The UBISOFT Ships do not have a normal circular pathway when turning , the Stern of the UBISOFT Ship slide towards the side of the ship in a wrong fashion way.
The picture above would represent the rudder being located in the center of the ship. For the stern to follow the bow as you are thinking, the rudder would have to be placed under the bow. But since the rudder is placed under the stern, the propulsion gets redirected to port or starboard. Such as like with an outboard motor in a small fishing boat, and as mentioned above, kind of like rear wheel steering and rear wheel drive all in one.
The exception to the rule, would be if there was thrusters under the bow such as like a modern container ship.
Now as far as the screenshot from SH4 above, what the devs could do to fix the somewhat "optical illusion" would be to curve the bow wake. The physics of the propulsion wake are correct.
Any ship will follow a circular path if the rudder is set off-center at any angle...but the radius of the circle it follows will get smaller with increased rudder angle. So, if you set your rudder at a high angle and leave it there for a full 360 deg loop, the radius will be smaller than if you only had it, at say, 5 deg.
Man, let me propose something:
Let the dev team will improve first playablity bugs, and at next step this and other graphical bugs.
Game with excellent graphics will be nothing if the playablity is full of bugs. And vice versa - a perfect game can be graphically weak (vide SH2 VS DC).
About the slipping when the boat is doing a turn - it's not like a car with the rubber tires meeting the road...there is much less friction between the boat's hull and the water, so maybe this is what you're seeing..the boat slipping as it makes a turn.
walkirie
12-18-2009, 12:17 PM
I think the problem can be the conflict between the wake of the bow and the wake of the stern , the wake of the stern shows the ship is turning , but the wake of the bow show the ship is going just streight forward
Therefore I think to solve this problem the wake of the bow must somehow become short/reduced when the ship turns left or right
http://i194.photobucket.com/albums/z58/tonschk/WRONGWAKE-1.jpg
Today I was checking GWX Gold installed with my SH3 , and I have found that the ships have a much better turning wake therefore I think it is only a matter of passion and take care about the details in this Silent Hunter game
I will only explain this once. Dont want to fill up a q&a with technical babble.
1st off the ships all steer from the rear. The rudder isnt so much cutting into the water but redirecting the thrust of the screws or props located infront of it. If the rudder is hard over to port this will cause the thrust from the props to be directed to the port side which pushes the aft end of the stern to starboard. This in turn causes the bow to swing to port creating a port turn. As has been stated before this is very simple logic when you look at it.
For instance one ship I have researched the mechanicals for a long time, the Titanic she pivoted roughly above her engines which means her back end from the engines aft would swing to port while from the engines forward would swing to starboard. That is the central part of the ship in a turn. The only reason you see some ships turning different is because some ships if not most ships dont have rudders anymore. They use a hybrid combination of electric motors powered by diesel engines. Then ontop of that these electric motor pods are able to swivel 360 degrees. Some boats even have them placed under the bow as well as under the stern giving them the ability to push a boat sideways up against the dock without the help of tug boats.
So hopefully this will explain why what you think is an inaccuracy in the game is actually very accurate.
Now back to the Q&A. I havent looked through all 17 pages to see if this question has been asked before but this is my question.
1. Will there be any new ships in the game? I am curious if we can expect to see new warships that wasnt in SH III or SH IV. If so which ships would be added?
2. Could we expect to see any convoys being escorted by battleships? It actually happened in WWII and I would like to know if this would be added in.
Will the player receive an all-new crew when upgrading to a new class of U-boat? Currently, this a problem especially in SH4, when the player upgrades from a small sub like an S boat to a large fleet boat. The end result is that a lot of crew slots are left empty with the new boat.
1. Do escort ships have an unlimited number of depth charges.
2. Is thermal layer implemented in the game? It is true that Germany did not have the methods to the detection of layers, but their existence have impact to the ability of submarine detection.
3. Does impact of thermal layer (if they are will be implemented) is described as the solid damping factor (as in SH4) or will be described by a simple mathematical model.
A simple mathematical formula (partial reflection):
If the submarine is below the thermal layers then: layer damping factor = 100 - (50 * (1 + cos (2A)))
A - angle between the line DD-SUB and a layer of thermal
If <45 degree the dumping factor is very high (asdic's signal is reflected by thermal layer)
On 45 degree the dumping factor is 50%
If >45 degree the dumping factor is very weak
If 90 degree thermal layer doesnt' work (DD is directly over SUB)
Adventages:
# Simple
# Variable depend from position of detected submaine
# Value can be changed by fans
I think its a great idea but personally I think it would be a waste to impliment it because it would limit the people that buy the game since there will be a playability issue on less than top of the line computers. Like wise every time it rains in SH III or SH IV there is very heavy seas. Half the time you wouldnt even notice rain hitting the ocean in very rough seas.
Then again I am just happy going back to the Atlantic, the german or english option, as well as the new feature where ships will break up into more than just two pieces.
I think we shouldnt get carried away here in always calling for even more details in the sim such as playing cards with the crew and things like that!Of course weall want the game to look good, giving us the most intense atmosphere we can get. But all that becomes an astonishing bore all to soon, if all you can do is go out there an torpedeoe as much as you can throughout
the whole war in the career modus.
(Like in SH 3 1.0, before mods like LSH were
available)
So please send us on career missions like
"Weseruebung", "Paukenschlag", Convoyaction,
etc. in relation to history, and not to forget let us struggle to "survive" the,from 1941
progressively increasing allied air and sea power using all that weaponry like hedgehog
huff/duff, squid,fido,asv radar, mad, and sono buoy etc.
Because from late 1943 on, it was almost impossible to torp anything of importance, you could only fight to barely survive your "Feindfahrt".
So please don`t forget the historical backround,
and the new SH wil become ar eal thriller!
1. In multiplayer games often happens that the lead of the convoy is sunk, and escort ship (destroyer) begins to lead. As a result, the convoy follows a new lead and moves around the submerged submarine (as lead).
Does SH5's mechanics make convoy leading by a small warship impossible?
2. Returning to homebase uboat needs contact with a small warship that carried him through this minefield. Does this feature will be implemented in the game?
3. Watching officer (and watch on the bridge itself) is extremely useful, but they have a flaw "infallibility." Does the higher difficulty levels SH5 will be able to make help of watching officer, who, however, like as normal human being can be wrong?
I mean incorrect measurement (the difficult weather conditions, experience, personal suitability) as well as increase the accuracy by his training. The good trained watching officer could be useful (helpful) at 100% difficulty level .
4. Memories of uboats commanders give information that crew was often changed - the officers and sailors received allocations for new ships and the captain received, for example, half of the new crew). Does this rotation will be included in the game?
5. Many mods for SH3 (and SH4) add many new units to the game. The advantage of this is a wide variety of ship types, and the disadvantage - a huge number of units in the book identify the vessels.
Is in SH5 a innovatory recognition system, allowing to identify the unit within a few seconds?
6. Happened to me several times that playing SH4 I ran out of fuel. I could do... nothing (sorry, can exit game only). Does this problem (bug) was fixed in SH5?
Will a little detail like the periscope be changed? In SH4 when you look outside the submarine it's always looking forward, even when you have locked on a target at a different bearing than 000.
So many options and questions here, been reading this topic and sounds a wonderful improvement over SH4. Just want this ,like now, as you all do, have pre ordered on Amazon UK release date is given as 5th March, is this true? Realism is the key for me, and all sounds pretty good. Interested on detection ranges and depth affect to detection, and of course going below the layer. Graphics sound and look impressive, like the idea of total control and movement around my Boat, bring it on.
I don't know if it is already asked but are the historical missions or operations taking place in the dynamic campaign (in sh3 it stood under single missions), and can you effect history by chancing the outcome of that mission or operation.
Does SH5 now has real impact of carbon dioxide poisoning (at real concentration of CO2) ? I mean the impact at efficiency of the crew or/and the simple effects of hearing impairment / seeing / crew's balancing at high (real) concentration of CO2. There is just one thing I'm really hoping to see in SH5.
The ability to quick dock or rearm, for multiplayer missions.
The multiplayer in general needs a lot of work from SH4.
It's just over far to quickly for people to feel immersed.
Even implementing something like an air drop for ammunition would at least be possible.
something..lol.
I've been trying to figure out how to make docking or rearming work in multiplayer for the past 2 days XD.
I even tried to edit the basic config files to allow for more reserve torpedoes.
Would of been nice if they had left in the ability from SH3 to set no limit for torpedoes in multiplayer.
But I'm looking forward to SH5.
I hope it stands up where SH4 fell down.
Hello! Here are some more questions http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif
- Will SH5 include important Landmarks like the Marine Ehrenmal (german navy memorial) in Laboe? Or the Nothsea-Baltic-canal with it's unique bridges? It would be cool to see these things while departing or arriving from/in Kiel.
- Will we be able to see falling snow? I've seen screenshots with snow on the ground, but it would be cool to to see snowflakes actually falling from the sky (like in snowstorm at sea).
- Will the navigational maps include depth information?
- Will we have information on sunrise and sundown times and about the moon phases?
- Can torpedo boats fire torpedos at my uboat? would be a critical but realistic situation.
- Will the destruction of the naval bases and cities, caused by allied bombing, be modelled in SH5?
Will there be missions other than combat patrols? (IE, landing spies on the American East Coast, recon, escort, etc).
GertFroebe_neu
01-07-2010, 01:00 AM
- Will a sleeping crew use less oxygen when the uboat is submerged?
- Will it be possible to lay the boat on soft sea bottom without getting damage? According to history uboat commanders did that once in a while to wait for the night or to hide the boat from destroyers.
- Will Destroyers also use towing lines for detecting uboats on the the sea bottom in shallow waters? The metal towing lines would sweep over the ground and produce a creaking sound when touching a metal body.
According to assurances of the developers we will be able to walk in the port.
Will developers create the atmosphere of war and the situation Germany at the end of the war like port destructions, smokes, fires, buried houses, sunk ships in port in the later years of the war (effect of the bombing of La Rochelle in 1944, and Kiel in 1945)?
These vessels should be among the most dangerous enemies to a u-boat, but in previous games they were less that useless.
I would also like to see the damage caused by Allied bombing. It may help us understand a little of what went through the crewmens' minds returning from a patrol, each time seeing more and more damage.
On another tack; in Sub Command, there is a voice recognition capability so that the sub commander can operate the boat with a certain number of commands. Is it possible that SH V could have a list of commands, (German and maybe English), that could be used to control the boat. That would add a touch of realism and improve my German at the same time!
It would be a useful addition if major headlands and other terrain features were included so that a commander could get a fix on his position.
And lastly, in desparation I ask again, will the home ports and other significant harbours look like the real thing, or, as in SH III, be unrealistic generic facilities?
2. Is it already planned to have a patch during / right after launch to integrate features that did not make it into the initial release?
The game looks amazing I can't wait to buy it and try it.
I have a question, though. Will we able to foul the enemy sonars by diving really close to the seabed and take advantage of the concealing effect of the sonar echos bouncing back from the seabed? As far as I know it was a tactic used by real U-boot captains.
Being a purist or die-hard isn't necessarily a bad thing, just as those who might be called "lightweights" ought to carry no particular stigma.
It's thanks to the former, who constantly push for adhering to the standard, that we still have a u-boat sim of any kind at all, instead of "U-Doom".
However, even the best possible level of "realism" still would not make SH5 a simulator. It is indeed a "fantasy world" of its own, where some aspects of submarine combat seem to be decently represented, but it is a virtual abstraction of a subjective reality, at best. Calling this game a simulator has more to do with marketing than actual fact, which makes it a very amusing misnomer.
And my generalization of "any game" is applicable when you consider that every genre has examples of the multiplayer option, from Tetris to Starcraft to Call of Duty. Whether or not it "fits" any game is merely your opinion, not fact.
When SH5 is released, I sincerely do hope that proper implementation of "realism options" and rich multiplayer features are available, so everyone from the most "lightweight" to the hardest of the "die-hards" can take from the game the experience that is most enjoyable for them.
In career mode, for instance, I play SH3 with very high realism settings. The only exception is I have never mastered manual targeting, so my WO handles the calculations for me, after I gather the target data.
On the other hand, I greatly enjoy multiplayer. It may not fit in with some concepts of what is "real" but it sure is fun! That fun and the great bunch of people I sail with are what keeps me coming back. You get to have a wolf-pack of real people to sail and fight alongside and it lends itself to the feeling of camaraderie, at least in part, the sailors of that time must have felt. You can't simulate that with "0" and "1".
Very well put!!!
I don't mind having a multi-player option for a game like this even though it is not very realistic. It is always fun to get together with some friends and play games. That being said I can only think that the time spent implimenting some features take away from features that truely make some games awesome. Nowadays it seems like every game is heading to the "global ranking" systems which drive me nuts! Not that achievements in a game are bad but I really don't care if I'm 342nd behind 341 other people. I believe that this is a feature that HAS to take away resources that could make a game better. I am glad to see that The Silent Hunter series has never gone in that direction!
Anyway it is good to read your banter and I thank you guys for your insights.
I have been wondering about the thermal layers as well. What about the high seas? In the other games I have never really seen bad seas that could break up convoys or damage some ships. From what I can remember the seas don't get much higher than 5-10 foot swells. I know maybe that is asking too much but the ocean is a dangerous place not only from enemys. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-wink.gif
TO ALL:
I have an issue with Silent Hunter III and V (which is not out yet). I recently installed Windows 7 as an upgrade from XP (which Silent Hunter III worked perfectly on). I called UBI and find that their concern for our (the Silent Hunter III community) dilemma is nil although very helpfull. All I got was an "I am sorry?!". I am "assuming", that they are not really worried about any type of fix as they are preparing for the release of the NEW Silent Hunter. Hoping that we will all run out and buy the new release. I am asking that the entire community write a request to suggest at least some satisfaction concerning this issue. I am pretty sure they know the issues and could fix the issues as other game developers have done.
Idea: Maybe they could give everyone that currently owns Silent Hunter III and is registered with UBI a considerable discount on the purchase of the new GAME.
Dissappointing as it is unless they do I wont buy their game as much as I want to. My guess they will provide the patch right after the executives think that they have sold enough of the new game.
Sorry UBI the community can see what you are doing.
I am afraid, perfectionism (proper shadow render, the correct render of a tanker, historical correctness) is the wrong path to develop a sub game whose priority is to sell to gamers not to USA navy.
having seen sub movies, so many gamers have fantasies with subs. (proper fantasies) this game should be a vehicle to realize their dreams.
yet we dont dream to calculate the torpedo bearing or identify the ship in the periscope
we fancy glory, we fancy thrill, we fancy action (simple but satisfying)
so I beg you make a game, simple but fun and thrilling to play, comprehensive campaign enough to suck you in and never let go.. a campaign system where we can realize out "what-if dreams"... let us save bismark from the hands of brit navy. let us at least try to sink the ship rumored to transport Churchill. lets us sneak past the gibraltar (das boot)
every WW2 fps game has an episode with Normandy. are they realistic? are the pillboxes rendered correctly? does german artilllery deal the correct damage? are there correct number of axis and allied troops in the scenario?
who cares.. I want to see my mate nailed in the head by the german MG which at last I will neutralize. and this game sells.
thnx for reading...
Here's a suggestion ... drop this BS constant-online DRM scheme or you'll be losing (by current count from subsim.com poll) over $40,000 in sales!!! And that's just the poll respondents at SubSim!! This is single player game, with no need at all to be constantly online, and we all know this crap isn't going to stop pirates.
If you've gotta do something like this, use a pre-existing scheme such as Steam, and don't make us be online constantly to play. What if I'm on a road-trip and want to wile away the time playing SH V?? Can't do it, can I?
Be aware that this WILL destroy this franchise!!!
I Understand that UBI is trying to increase sales by not having its game being floating around torrents and other sites. Here is the thing though, the crackers and hackers will find a way to crack it anyway regardless of UBI attempts to protect their game. But How many Long term customers is UBI going to lose by having this DRM is a much better question?
I am very positive that many of gamers don't actually have Internet connection always available, and that will ruin their experience because they will not be able to play the game.
Did you know that the flag painted on the Bismarck's bow was the swastika, not the Maltese Cross? Neither was the battle ensign? If you folks are trying to get into realism, do it right. The battle ensign you're representing belongs in the First World War, not the Second. All of the major capital warships like Tirpitz and Bismarck had the Nazi flag painted on the bow. Maybe to scare the bejesus out of the captain that if he failed, not to come home.
For the sake of Historical realism please finally depict the swastika on all german flags , emblems , medals , uniforms and anywhere it could be found at the time.Ive been playing silent hunter since the first game came out and Im sick and tired of this swastika phobia.If there are Law problems then have an ingame option so as the player can select to view the swastika or not.In my country Greece it is legal to have the swastika portayed.It is a Historical symbol and its nothing new.The ancient Greeks carved swastikas in marbel more than 2000 years before the existance of Nazi germany.Showing that simple black cross is not historically correct and greatly diminishes the historical accuracy as well as the authentic feeling that a game such as Silent hunter is supposed to provide.
I recommend to Silent Hunter fans in the U.S.A. to try and make the trip and tour a real U-Boat.
Also an American WWII sub the USS Siversides SS-236 ,a Gato class, can be toured. She is docked in Muskegon MI. at the Great Lakes Naval Museum. This is another must see all fellow Silent Hunters
I think u are right.(Sostos, + ego eimai ellinas kai exo tin apopsi sou ) or put in game an option to disable them. It came into my mind the airport mission in MW2. As what you will do tehre migh tbe offensive or too violent fo russians so there is the option to skip the mission.
I get a pleasure when I play in Silent Hunter 3, because there has qualitative sound effects, qualitative textures of u-boots and Germans, who look like a Germans http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif (I mean clothes, faces and voices).
I would like to hear screaming people from a sinking ship (like the movie "Das Boot").
I don't like some guy's face, who look at me from the periscope (this is in your dynamic campaign trailer). In the periscope must be enemy ships, I think.
Thx
A lot of countries have laws against the use of Swastikas. Implementing them in SH5 would mean they cannot release the game in said countries.
I wonder if you will be able to turn off the lightning when pointing over a crew member and the white cross seen from gameplay.
Thanks,
GKane, sorry mate, but the King George the V class Battleship.... That's nothing special. Prince of Wales and KGV both fought the Bismarck and therefore should just be part of the standard edition.... Maybe adding an Iowa class battleship (not historically accurate) into the game but is special or maybe a Russian/ French battleship but not King George the V as a "special" skin.
If your sub is around Britain and England, or New York will there be a lot of Passenger Liners and Merchant Ships?
Unfortunately you wont be commanding your own 505 in SH5, for U-505 is a Type IX Boat and as far as I heared the only playable Boat will be a Type VII(A,B+C)one.
So, get yourself a decent copy of the old SH3 1.4, download the Living Silent Hunter v.5 Mod http://www.lsh3.com/
and your wish will come true!
That will give you enough time to
wait for Ubi to provide us with more than a
half-finished Game.
Welcome to the boat capitaniojr,
Try the "N" key. That is how we brought up the recognition manual in III and IV. Might be the same in V but I can't say for sure as I am boycotting this title due to the DRM rubbish. I play when I want. Not when Ubisoft allows it.
BrianHolt have you tried contacting the place you bought the game from to see about getting another key?
I figure this is a download and not on a Dvd. Who did you download the game from?
