Just opening up this thread for discussion of the great ships in WWII. If you have pictures please feel free to post.

Do you have preference of any ships you like? Please let us know http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

For the first discussion, IF the two great ships Yamato and Bismarck were having battle one on one. Which ship do you think will win the battle?

Just from quick glance of the spec, I'd say Yamato, any opinions? http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

My favourite ship .. IJN Kongo Class Battleship. It's just the look of it that is so cool with the pagoda structure. Also, this battleship was one among the tough ships.

These possible battles are always interesting.
I guess if you left all human factors out, who knows between the Y and the Bismark. Obviously the Y is a stronger ship, but not sure who had the better aiming radar systems.

Imagine if the Yamato survived the war and became a museum. I believe a visit to it would be on my bucket list.

We need to get an A-150 battleship modeled. Sure, it never actually got built, but can you imagine hunting that beast? http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/25.gif

IF they "could" get close enough before being destroyed.

The Bismarck and Tirpitz were highly over rated, their reputation today based more on the mythology that everything German is somehow intrinsically better.

They had abysmally poor anti aircraft weapons compliments. Hence the incredibly slow Swordfish aircraft were able to successfully attack her.

They were not well compartmentalized compared to modern US battleship types. (North Carolina and onwards designs).

Much is said about their ability to withstand fire from other ships, based on Bismarck's battle with the British fleet. The fact is the the Royal Navy in their haste closed the range far to much. If they had been hitting the German ship with plunging fire instead of direct fire she would have been far more gravely damaged, far sooner.

And they often did. Tigers were not impervious by any means. Any tanker will tell you they NEVER took the Tiger on from the front, except early in the war (before they knew better). I've even read accounts of an American M8 Greyhound taking out a Tiger from behind...with its 37mm gun!

People underestimate the Sherman, but that is often due to a lack of research and believing all of the mythology that goes along with the Tiger.

Shermans (albeit the Firefly) are responsable for Wittmann's death.

Would have been something to see if they had built it, but at 90k ton displacement, chances are it would have run aground before leaving the harbour!

Now if we could just re-commission two of the Iowa's and park them off Somialia, that would be real "gunboat" diplomacy and we could handle those guys like Jefferson did the Barbary Pirates in early 1800's!

Assuming battleships, I'd have to go with the Iowa class "fast BBs". Built from experience with the older types, they "got it right"; striking the balance between size (Yamato) and speed (Bismark), and had the radar direction to make their shots count, both surface and AA.

Now if it were open to all classes, well, then I'd have to go with submarines. Consider USS Barb's accomplishments, and that answer is a given.
