I've been playing multiplayer lately and when I'm confronted by destroyers I dive below the layer and creep at 2 knots to evade them before they get close (or so I thought). They seem to always find me and have some sort of sub seeking cans (LOL). The funny thing about this is after I die and go to observer mode I see the other players still at periscope depth, doing 7-8 knots, with their scopes up the whole time. Now the destroyers somewhat ignore this and do a half hearted run not hitting these subs and then turn in front of them so they can eat a fish. Makes no sense to me. I thought subs were a "hole in the water" when deep and slow. I like the stealth aspect to set up for the convoy and I'm not interesed in wasting fish on DD's , so what is the best strategy for this?

Are you running any mods. I know that Flavored To Taste makes the destroyers ridiculously difficult given the japanese performance in ASW during WWII.
I would assume that the multiplayer would have some form of version checking built in, though I haven't played online.
The best thing to do, assuming historically accurate weapons is to dive deep. I don't mean just drop below a thermal layer, I mean go as close to crush depth as you feel comfortable going to and staying at for long periods of time. Atleast the first half of WWII the japanese lacked a depth charge that could be set to go off deeper than 200 feet or so. Of course, you want to make sure that you're atleast at 250 or even 300 to make sure that you're completely clear of the blast.

No I'm not using any mods. I usually dive to 200-220 ft well befor they get close so I know they won't pick me up. I'll try deeper next time to see if it makes a difference. I'm also using a Gar boat when I play if this makes any difference.

Yeah, you want to go way below those depths, the depths you're running at (200 - 220) would mean that at any point in time part of your boat is at a depth setting for a japanese depth charge. So, those things are going off right on top of your hull.

Actually, real american fleetboats had a sensor system called the Depth Charge Direction Indicator. It was a system using 6 microphones (fore, aft, starboard, port, ventral, dorsal) rigged up to a direction indicator to show what direction depth charge blasts (actually any loud impulse of sound) were coming from.
