View Full Version : Video 'Stutter' Problem

Hi folks,
I posted this in the Tech Support forum, but thought I might get some responses here.
I just bought a brand new Intel Core 2 Duo e6300 system with 2 Gigs of DDR2 memory and a GeForce 7900 GS video card and Windows Vista.
When playing GRAW, I get a lot of video 'stutter' where things will run smoothly, then every 10 - 20 steps while running, the graphics will jump like they have been cached and released....really choppy.
I have downloaded the latest NVidia drivers and tried numerous settings in-game. I have also gone through the tweaks, uninstalled and re-installed, and even did a clean install of Vista. Nothing seems to help.
Any suggestions on what I could do to correct this problem ?

Maybe irrelevant but I have noticed that as well with my Rig. I am still running Windows XP w/SP2 32-bit, Intel E6300 Duo Core, (2) BFG 7800GTX O/C cards in SLI, 2gb DDR2 Memory and everything at full except resolution which, for some reason, I am unable to acomplish this as I loose video or get weird objects on top of the video.
Same thing happened when I tried to play it on my Windows XP w/SP2 64-bit O/S.
I am thinking is not us but, of course, it will probably be hard to troubleshoot... I'll keep an eye on this thread as it can only help smooth out the game or learn to tweak my rig for another game.

I changed monitors and I was surprised on the how much that made a difference.
I went from a 26" to a 55" and the 55" runs alot better, even @ higher resolutions.
Make sure shadows turn off and antil- that is useless in most cases imho

this makes it sound like moniter refresh problems to me..
Other than that, it could be background programs, settings are to high, slow or backed up memory, or a slew of other various things.
i'd put my finger on the games engine not responding to tech it wasn't built on though, since its devs (at least the company) were originaly arcade game makers, which gets its system specs set in whatever they put in it, not much dif that the ever unchanging consoles.

What screen resolution are you on when playing GRAW? Drop it a notch or two and see if the problem is still there. Could be an issue with Win Vista, too.

I never told you to go out and buy a new monitor.
Almost every technical complaint forgets to let us know what monitor settings thier using.
The monitor you choose and the settings play a part in diagnoseing a problem, I was merely making an example.
What you choose to do with your boyscout money, is up to you =)

I'm using a Gateway 17" Flat Screen, and have tried all of the resolution settings I could think of.
I average around 23 - 40 FPS through FRAPS, but the stutter is there no matter what I have tried.
Anyone else running on Vista WITHOUT this problem ?

Weeee fun..were not argueing and Im glad you have a sense of humor atleast.
The monitor is the last thing someone thinks about which is a mistake.
Hey who knows who to blame, all we can do is come in here and argue on where to point the finger =)
Watch when they release Crytek---how many complaints will compile on a well layed out masterpiece?

Similar thread at GR.net site. Give it a read, some of the suggestions there might help.

This game is not supported on windows vista.
Whether it runs on it is down to luck more than judgment.
The vista drivers for sound and gpu are still mostly beta. If you read the release notes on nvidia and ati there are still many unsolved problems with drivers.
This may be the answer because many of us are having the same problem, me included, its a case of waite and see if driver issues become more stable.

I would tend to agree that it's a Vista issue after trying everything I have seen mentioned on various forums to fix the problem...
That is unless my Intel Dual 2 Core E6300, 2 Ghz Ram, GeForce 7900 system just isn't sufficient to run GRAW...
I wonder what I would need to do to install XP over an installation of Vista.

Well, I am having similar problems running under windows XP... only with GRAW and I am playing Vegas as well and I get no video stutter (I get other problems but that is irrelevant here http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_wink.gif)

Yup, I'm having this same problem... no matter what resolution, what settings.... when ur runing in the game its noticeable, it like skips frames for a milli second. Though when you stand still or walk its hard to notice, if its even there....
I know its not my system, as its beefy...
Intel Core 2 duo E6600
2GB's Corsair XMS2 DDR2 RAM
BFG Geforce 8800GTX 768MB PC-X card
Asus P5N-E nforce 650i lga775 mobo (0401 BIOS)
Maxtor Maxline II 300GB SATA HDD
Audigy 2 ZS
LiteON 16x DVD burner
Gateway FPD2275W 22'inch widescreen monitor
@ 1680x1050
Saitek eclipse keyboard
Logitech MX1000 mouse.
........
I'm running Windows Vista Ultimate x64 final, and I'm lucky as I've found drivers for all of my components.... latest drivers officially supported for my video card and motherboard controller for download at nvidia, and even Audigy 2 ZS drivers, all which are latest 64-bit drivers....
I think it may be some simple imcompatibility error in GRAW/Vista design, as my other games run just like they did in XP, and it could be DirectX9 backwards compatibility issues or just flakey Nvidia Drivers
I know it GRAW ran like a dream on my Windows XP installtion, but I've removed it.
I'll email nvidia here in a bit, we'll get more help from them than microsoft or UBI on this matter....
UBI could careless, they're not going to go back and fix a year old game, especially with GRAW2 about to release, no point in wasting their precious $$$ and time to do so. They figure if it works on vista, great, if it doesnt, then your SOL, they wont fix it.

I find as I move through the missions I am getting a lot of graphical problems which were not in xp, I am now resigned to the fact this game will not well at all on vista.
Driver releases may improve this however but its a monthly thing with Nvidia to do driver releses.
I am hoping GRAW 2 will be better.

beavermatic,
That makes me feel a bit better as GRAW ran fine on my (2 year old) Alienware machine running XP, but stuttered when I bought my new Dual 2 Core machine.
It was the first game I installed on the new machine, and it depressed me when it ran worse than on my older system.
Does anyone know if GRAW2 is running the same engine as GRAW ? If so, the problem may continue.
I guess the best we can hope for is that future NVidia, Vista, or GRAW patches might fix the problem.

I have a nvidia 7950gt and was running the game flawlessly using windows XP sp2. This past week I installed Vista H.P. 64 bit because I needed my copy of XP for my older computer and when I installed graw I got the same stuttering effect your mentioning. All the hardware was identical the only thing that changed was the OS. Nvidia has a beta driver v100.59 out for 6/7/8 series cards but it did not make a difference in the stutter.
Therefore, having ran the game perfectly on XP Pro with the settings cranked up to being unable to play the game at all in Vista I would have to say that this is an OS issue, regardless of the newest graphics driver being installed.
BTW: MS sucks!

Nvidia v100.59 driver for Windows Vista 64bit systems.

Ok, I did something that finally helped a bit.
I downloaded the NVidia v100.59 driver (32 bit version for the Vista installed on my machine) at the following location:
http://www.nvidia.com/object/winvista_x86_100.59.html
I uninstalled my current NVidia drivers using Windows Control Panel Add/Remove Programs..then restarted my system and installed the NVidia driver above.
After that, I reinstalled the DirectX drivers directly from the Advanced Warfighter CD.
This increased the Frame Rate I was getting before by about 15 - 10 Frames Per Second, and lessened the 'stutter'. It's still there a bit, bit, and still kind of annoying, but the game is much more playable.

I did the tweak that was posted here and it help with the stutter problem but I'm stll seeing very slightly jerky movements while zooming... not enough to hinder my focus but enough to make it annoying.
I am also getting use to my new G15 & G7 Keyboard and mouse combo so I am going to hold more comments until I learn to use them both right.
Coolest thing about the G7 mouse is that you can set your buttons as Keyboard letters per game... I don't know if this is a new logitech software that can be use on other mouses but my mx700 didn't have this. This is a very cool add-on with games like GRAW & Vegas which won't accept all the mouse buttons.
