I think that we can understand why Ubisoft wants such a filter. But why not make it a DEFAULT feature that can be turned OFF by manually editing the CONFIG.INI file. When someone DOES edit the config.ini file, the game should post a large disclaimer when it is loading saying WARNING --- THE SECURITY FEATURE PROTECTING INDIVIDUAL FROM EPILEPSY HAVE BEEN TURNED OFF. PLAYING THE GAME WITHOUT THE SAID FEATURE COULD CAUSE SEIZURES IN CERTAIN INDIVIDUALS.

I for one would like a way to disable this feature.

This or Ubi should leave an unlock code for the ones who agrees by a web form (or fax or whatever you want) to not take legal action against Ubi / 1C in the case of an personal epi attack.

Even Ubi couldn't be that stupid.
This has got to be just another nasty rumor.

EDIT: Apparently Ubi is that stupid.
Jeez!

Epilepsy Warnings have been included with most games for years, never heard of anyone sueing over it. Now some crazy filter you can't even turn off with a EULA? It does not add up at all. There is some other issue here.

I'm not going to vote until I know what the facts are. We have had a great deal of speculation, but little real information. A poll at this point achieves nothing. It may be that the problem can be fixed with no noticeable effect on frame rates - or it may not be. It may be that Ubisoft are legally obliged to do this - or it may not be. It may be practical to make this optional - or it may not be. What is the point in having an uninformed 'vote' on something we know little about and may be unable to influence anyway?

I think the most sensible course for now is to ask 1C:Maddox and Ubisoft to clarify the situation, and then we can discuss options.

Well the video that we got back in november 2010 shown good FPS on a Intel i5 CPU's and a mid range GPU. So it's probable that this filter is the cause.

Or the video was not recorded directly from a PC but had some treatment, as all the trailers did...

you guys still haven't seen proof that the filter causes this and you're asking UBI to increase the chances for a libel suit upon itsself?

I would suggest to wait at least a week. You know, Release day here in Europe before you wait to do anything mis or uninformed.....

toothpaste has a warning label: "keep out of reach of children under the age of 4, if swallowed please contact your local poison control centre" Its a full disclosure statement, no one can sue when they have been explicitly forewarned of the potential risk.

No need to hamper the rest of us with this.

I am an real aircraft pilot, and this is something we are made aware of and taught how to respond (look away from the flashing light!).

Flash induced Epilepsy has never >directly< killed anyone AFAIK, however it can be an issue if operating a vehicle.

What is vital is if one does have epilepsy so they will be aware.
In short, if a game triggers a bout of epilepsy, it is a GOOD thing (tm) becuase one will now how to deal with it when it happens again.

In the UK if a TV programme or news report has flashing photography in it they give a verbal warning that it contains flash photography
Surely if they can broadcast live to millions all at once a sim/game is capable of issuing a warning so that anyone carrying on past the warning accepts responsibility of their own actions.

i have picked optional with explicit warning. but i dont believe it is enough for ubisoft to be quite honest. its inclusion does have to be mandatory or else its inclusion is pointless. never the less it is included, aslong as those aware of of the filter and able to mod the game to disable it should by rights have acces wihin the config files to disable it. this alone i believe is enough to counter the threat, and whilst providing a clause that if you do mod the game files ubisoft are void from any responsibility. there ya go! sorted! jobs a good 'un.

isnt it too late to discuss its inclusion. its we the consumer and ubisoft move forward that matters here. Please Ubisoft dont destroy. Support its a better more viable option. please.

They might as well include a catheter with the game so someone doesn't sue for ruined pants.

Lord knows my bladder is usually ready to burst as I can't tear myself away from the game for hours on end.

Can I sue?

You know the reason more and more of this nanny state stuff is happening is government is paying for your healthcare. If they pay for it they can decide that since this causes an unnecessary expense (IE the seizure) then we need to regulate it since its costing us money. Smoking, salt, sugary drinks, fattening foods. Let the government take care of you since your parents don't.

Salute

Despite what Luthier has said several things are clear:

It was UBI's policy to introduce the anti-epilepsy filter, it is obviously their bureaucracy which is driving this issue.

It is time for them to compromise in the interests of seeing this game prosper.

The filter should be optional.

Well seeing that many people are rushing to cancel their order, I will do the opposite and pre-order mine.

I believe Oleg's intention are to improve on this sim whatever the restriction put upon him. I just hope that Ubisoft come to their senses and realise that this is a simulator not an arcade game, and that consequently, some compromises must be done in order to accommodate this genre...

One question I would like to ask Luthier is this: Was this Epilepsy filter in-place when all of the development footage was released such as the in cockpit lighting video and such. If not then why was it released to the public knowing that such High Definition footage could cause epilepsy. If it was then all I can say is the footage looked good even with it.

I personally will not be cancelling my order over this as I feel like Rise of Flight and indeed IL2 when it was first released most Flight sims come with initial problems that can be over come in time.

I rather think the reason is due to the group of
people who pour MCD-coffee over themselves and
then sue because the coffee was "hot". :/

*sigh* @ people who sue others for their own incompetence.

The most rational comment I've seen in a long time.

Rise of Flight really was a horrible mess on
release, but a year later the developers had
turned into one of the most beautiful sims out
there.

The more people that purchase the game, the more
money the developer will have to patch, fix and
add new features & planes.

It's quite simple folks, explain to UBI in terms their pea brains can understand. Don't spend the money, cancel your orders. When they act right and make the filter optional then buy the game. It's the only way for publishers with as low a combined IQ that UBI has to make them understand.

There is a way to turn "OFF" the Epilepsy filter that I read about at another forum so that feature doesn't bother me.

You're one of the smart ones that just "get it". Besides, I'm usually right. In fact, 1999 was the last time I was wrong.

BTW folks, played the Russian version. I smoked a Tiger tank by ricocheting .50's off the ground to the underside of the tank. Finally Oleg got the 50's and thin skin of the Tiger modeled correctly!

Good news, UBI went with option 1, set to default with option to turn off with a warning.

The best one IMHO.

This POLL is no longer needed http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

Thank God. Maybe that means we can finally lay to rest the .50 cal/Tiger tank line. I mean, sure it's still just as funny as it was 10,000 times ago. Not as funny as two weeks, be sure. Now that one is FUNNY.
