I'm in the early stages of a film project I've been planning, and I'm thinking I need a better program than Windows Movie Maker, especially if I want to create the kick-azz trailer I've envisioned. One of the things I need the program to have is the ability to separate the clip's audio from the clip's video, so I can have audio from one scene overlaying video from another. I know it's possible with iMovie, but I don't have an iMac, and as far as I'm aware it's impossible with WMM.
So are there any free movie-editing programs available for download, which are better than WMM?
Thanks.

Awesome, thanks. I'll test it out when I get back on my own computer.
Until then, can you tell me if it can separate the clip's audio from the clip's video?
EDIT: Hmm, I tried it out, and the layout is too different from what I'm used to, and too confusing. Plus, it doesn't like .wmv and .asf files... Are there any other programs, that have a layout similar to WMM?

Premiere Pro. It's not free, but it's probably the best thing the cheap-side of Avid for a PC...
Older versions of Premiere can probably be found somewhere for rather cheap and would still probably do what you wish.

That looks so cool... but... $700US??? That's like... $1000AU... I can't afford that... http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/cry.gif
Hmm... older versions you say... I'll have a look I guess.

get pinnicle studio VERY cheap, like $60 US, it can seperate audio from video and even lets you add music... not to mention tons of other stuff...

I gave you the free one, but there is a pay one that works fairly well called ULead Video Studio. I have that and have used it and it works pretty good (got to love free software from a hardware purchase. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-very-happy.gif ).

I got Microsoft Movie Maker to kill the audio on the clip and over lay the music I wanted. Takes some work but it does work.

You're best off buying a mac mini with iLife 05
Not just for the movie stuff either... at the rate microsoft is going it will have 1 billion potentially lethal(to ur computer) viruses in the next two years
Apple, at most, will have about 5

I just remembered, I bought Pinnacle Studio 7 ages ago. I don't think it worked on my computer... but I guess I could give it another shot, if I can find it...

pinnacle studio 9.0 is better, if it runs on your PC...

Ah, yes, Pinnacle should work, too--I forgot about it (Premiere's still better--for a PC http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_wink.gif ).
But yeah, get a Mac, that's your best option all-around. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

I'll keep looking for Pinnacle...
