Hi, just started playing SH4 again for the first time in ages.

After reading jclifts earlier post about easy ways to sink escorts it made me remember about one shot (torp) kills by firing a torp just under a ships draft and setting it to explode by magnetic influence.

I've been trying this approach and I'm not getting much luck, either it misses because the in game log of ships drafts is a liar or just doesnt have the desired result. does anyone else use this technique or is it best to just fire 2-3 torps off and hope that does it.

In general im curious to you guys sinking strategies. lets here them!

A lot depends on your settings. The game is fairly realistic with the historic torpedo failures of WW2. They had several problems.

One, the magnetic influence would often premature and explode. There's a long explanation, but no need for that. The torps also had a high dud rate.

Another problem they ran much lower than stated and this is in the game. They run about 9 ft lower than stated in the book. If you run them just below the keel, they're actually running another several ft deeper and will just go under the target and not explode.

The rudders can also get stuck and cause circle runners. Simply your torp will leave and run in a circle and come back and hit your sub.

These were all serious problems that killed many sub men in the war and they're included in the game. Most of the problems were corrected by mid 43. Until then, expect problems with the M14. I just got killed by a circle runner last night as my torps were hitting a carrier..not fun.

Just forget keel shots early war and run them about half of the stated depth in the book and you should be OK. You just have to deal with duds and prematures unless you play with duds off in the settings.

You can carry M10's, smaller, not as powerful, but work most the time

Most of us prefer the historical reality of war with all it's problems. The stock game is very easy, even on hard settings. You may want to look at one of the many mods that make the game more realistic. The ships are easy to kill in stock. Players can refit a few times and rack up 500K tons of kills...really silly. So learn the game with it's problems and if you want historical reality, you'll want to move to mods down the road.

If you just need time to get use to the game, play stock with easy settings, but that will eventually bore you. Mod's improve the game, graphics, ect...200%...

In time the game will amaze you if you stick with it. Most start off new and go around killing everything with uber stock guns, but we all start that way. To become good at this game, it takes time. You have to really learn a lot, more when you play with realistic mods with realistic settings. Most of us so called vets play with mods and settings that are realistic and we're glad to go out and sink 40-60K tons per patrol.
