View Full Version : SHIII NEVER crashed on your system? please share!

I have 2 PC's that NEVER crashed while playing SHIII at its top quality. Who else has similar experiences?
What I mean by crash is SHIII complete shutdown.
Its fine by me for a popup like a windows notification like a disconnected dialup notice to force SHIII to minimize. It happened to me but its not SHIII's fault. I clicked SHIII on my taskbar and I continued where I left off.

Yep, 2 Pentium 4 3.06 Machines, One with 6800GT and one with ATI 9600. Neither has crashed even once during gameplay.
on the one with the 6800gt, I got the bug where you have to cut and paste the career saves back and forth to desktop.
on the 9600gt i get a minor drop in framerate when sitting at the dock in port with all the folks waving and the band playing, but that is all.
I've been playing and thorougly enjoying this wonderful sim since March 18. In all that time and countless hours of playing, it has never crashed once -- not so much as a hiccup.
Then again, my system is stable, optimized, efficient and updated with current drivers, service packs etc. I firmly believe that 99% of the challenges (not speaking to SH3's bugs) people are plagued with are solely attributed to the current state of their systems.
In any event, I feel confident that once the devs are able to address the bugs in an all encompassing patch and are confident in its stability -- we'll see it released soon enough.
Kudos to Strategic Simulations for a truly outstanding release!

Ive never had a CTD, or any type of annoying bug or crash which kills the game. My machine? P4 2.66Ghz, ATI Radeon 9800Pro, 768Mb RAM. This is the most stable game ive played in a very long time- and can rival console games for stability.

I've never had a crash either. The only hiccups I ever consistently get is when I return into the area around my port, the game will freeze for a few seconds while it does something. Probably just loading up details on the port itself, or something like that. Extremely stable for me, but I also have a stable system like mentioned above.
Same here. Two PC's - one P4 2.8 with Geforce Ti4600 and one AMD64 3500+ with ATI X700 and have not had any CTD's. (Unless you're referring to Crash inTo Destroyers. I have had a couple of those! http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif)

Same here. More than one week playing daily and it runs fine, zero probs, on an AMD64 3500+ 1GB RAM Gainward 6800GT.
As someone mentioned above, probably many people who has CTDs is due lack of system care.

Never had a crash in SHIII (nor any issue with Starforce, for that matter....all my drives, usb storage, and my back software all work as before). I even play with GameVoice running in the background for voice communications and voice commands:
"ahead flank!",
"ja Sirkommandant! voran Flanke"
AMD 2500 @2Gig
1 GB DDR 3200 dual
WD 20 GB IDE HD
Sony DVD ROM
GeForce 5700 Ultra
Windows XP SP2 (actually, a pretty old install of XP)
All I've done is keep spyware off my system, defrag often, free up diskspace often, and shut down any background applications I don't need running.

No technical problems at all. I play on a 2.0 GhZ Pentium 4-M laptop with an nVidia GeForce GoFX 5600 (64MB) with 512 MB of RAM.
The game runs just fine. The only setting I have below max is non-High textures, and while I'll occasionally get a tiny bit of slowdown as the band loads in port (nowhere else) and occasionally in 1024x time compression, the game runs like a dream.
My only problem with the game is one of design: there seems to be some kind of lack of thermal layers or something. I find that it's easy for destroyers to detect me with ASDIC at 100 meters, and impossible for them to detect me at 20 meters. If I destroy a convoy or am about to be attacked, all I have to do is set periscope depth, retract that puppy, rig for silent running, and nobody ever finds me. Is this really accurate?

Aside from the typical known bugs that we the people and the dev team know about its great to know many of us run SHIII just fine with our systems. This is reassuring. Now the people who have problems with SHIII crashing knows its their systems not SHIII.
Same as an automobile. If you own a sports car and the manufacture suggests you to put hightest in it but you put in cheap gas, dont expect high performance. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

I will say I've played for the past 3 days without a crash. However, I do get random CTD but it's still stable. Also remember, that just because it's working great for us doesn't mean it is for others. There are a lot of driver/hardware conflicts that devs can't program for so let's not beat up on those having problems http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

I have had one crash. I'm not sure what was going on, but the first time I played it, I had a CTD. I think I had just accidentally clicked on one of the crew management buttons in the damage screen, but since then a few drops in frame rate in big convoys with lots of smoke but nothing else (apart from the odd bug - LOL - but doesn't reduce enjoyability).

Well, lets not get carried away here.
I've been playing solidly since the 22nd with no crashes what so ever, EXCEPT...
I ran into that save game CTD, where you would exit half way through the load screen, couldn't even enter SH3 any more. I do not think that was machine related, it was an issue with save files.
However, did I panic? Well, maybe a little. Okay, maybe a lot.
Did I go ape nuts? Well, maybe a little. Not a lot.
Did I go screaming and ranting on the SH3 Forums! Well, maybe I wanted to do just a little. But I did not.
Instead I just kept my cool, moved my career files, SH3 ran fine, moved career saves back, ran fine. Career restored, been simming ever since with no issues and a LOT of tonnage sank.
Just warning ALL of you "can't crash on me!!!" advocates that your day of recogning may come (if before future patches).
However, not a single un-workable "game stopping" bug or crash. Much better than my experience with other more famous and popular titles.
If someone is a sub sim fan at any level, you've got to be out of your mind in taking any note of the odd multiple thread spewing bug cheering miss-enchanted buyer who is trying to dive with a five to eight year old PC which crushes at depth 15 meters, only allowing enough time to get a quick peek through their monitor's periscope before chassis emplosion and sunk into the murky depths of the miss-informed.
May we have a moment of silence to show our sorrow over their misfortunes. Just a quick one, got to get back to SH3 patrol.

well i've had a horrendous time with crashes and so forth ---> until last night, where i played for 2 hours without one
my problems can be attributed to bad memory i think - i ran MEMTEST86+ last night (free at http://www.memtest.org/) and it exposed a problem. I spent a while juggling dimms areound and rerunning it and early indications are that the problem is fixed. (I hope)
i suspect that the game does A LOT of data crunching (calculating where all the ships are etc) and so the data transmission through the memory modules exposes problem that other games/apps do not reveal
maybe

No crash but first game freeze tonight after 12ve successful missions.
I applied for a transfer but I got this answer:
"Transfer to: (null)" ?
I clicked OK, but I just got a new answer:
"Transfer to:GO TO GAME" and again: "..to:MISSION" etc.
then I clicked on the back arrow to get out but no, I was stucked!, I had to go to taskmanager to end the game. I launched the game again but the same happened, I then started again and went on patrol all right, but no transfer for me.
Any ideas?
Otherwise the game plays beautifully with:
AMD Barton +3200
1 gg RAM
Nvidia 6600
Win XP SP2
and the official patches

It certainly does not mean that by any means!!!! It means that it only works on certain configurations, you've got roughly 62 PAGES OF POSTS full of complaining about CRASHES and you think 3 f'in pages in one post means that suddenly if is everyone else's system?!?! give me a f'in break, in my 15 years of gaming I can count on one hand the number of games that crash like SH3 does. But ****, according to you it must be my system right?
Developers should be able to code robust enough code that a game should NEVER crash directly to desktop without an error message, it means they clearly didn't even have a proper exception handling routine in their software as I never get error messages from SH3.
