Oh man I feel your pain on this one .I have reinstalled this program at least 3 or 4 times and its never gone in right without lots of hair pulling...Why does it have to be so tricky!!!???In my last install the issue was the ClearCache =0 line in conf.ini.It may or may not be 0 or 1 and it may have a gap between the two words and it might need a capital or small c at the start of Cache ete etc ...Even some forum posts have it wrong .Dont worry about the tick box on read Only once you untick it, its gone (even if it appears to reappear)
Heres an excerpt form my conf-NB the last line may need to be manually added -just type it in EXACTLY
[game]

It goes without saying that the reason Im prepared to undergo the issues installing this is that it is simply the best IL2 utility.Default markings look ridiculous after these.Essential IL2 extra...

Great installer program for MM Rudel!
I'm not so sure the avi will help because it flies bye like it's 100X speed when I play it.
<span class="ev_code_YELLOW">if it plays very fast for you, download VLC player and use that to play</span>
still fast, but I was just able to follow it using VLC.
It still is a tricky program to use - if you miss a single step or misspell anything it's not working.
The line in conf.ini needs to be EXACTLY:
<pre class="ip-ubbcode-code-pre">
ClearCache=0
</pre>
Select the complete line, copy and paste into conf.ini under the [game] header. NO leading spaces (meaning no spaces before "ClearCache" and NOT "clearcache" or ANY other spelling. Only "ClearCache=0" will work.

Here's a copy/paste of the instructions MaxMhz kindly gave me when I was having trouble installing MM (thanks Max). Unfortunately the forum lost a lot of posts the very next day so the thread is gone. By following these instructions I got MM to work first time. Give it a try, good luck.
Get MAT Manager 2.36 self-installer from M4T
That will get you running much easier and is the latest version.
Remember to make a copy and paste of il2fb.exe and rename the copy il2.exe
Once installed click Setup button in the MM control panel section and point it to your il2.exe directory
Edit conf.ini (case sensitive!) and add the line
ClearCache=0
Then click the Load tab in the top-left corner(it's a button). Select the settings you want from the drop down selections and check boxes all over the place then click the square Save BUTTON - yes it is - left of the Setup button. Check the "FP v3.03+ no IL2-MAT needed" check box beneath the square Save Button.
Now you can launch IL-2 by selecting FB and clicking the Launch button. The settings you selected will already show in the arming screen after you selected your plane nationality/squadron.

I AM USING MATMANAGER UPDATE.I'VE DONEALL OF THE ABOVE SEVERAL TIMES AND STILL NO GO. sHAFTO
MaxMhz
05-27-2008, 01:46 PM
Oh mye - that's where you go wrong - do NOT use ANY update. ONLY use MAT Manager self Installer by JG51_Rudel. NOTHING ELSE or more.
HERE is the link for download (http://mission4today.com/index.php?name=Downloads&file=details&id=3117)
Uninstall everything that reaks of a previous MM install, then install using the self-installer.
If you use updates you need to start with the very first version, install, uninstall, repeating:
uninstall old version then install next update
until you had them all and finally arrive at 2.36.
The self-installer installs in one go to 2.36 and you don't need to try to find the files at Aces' site which is not the most user friendly site I know.

You don't need to shout! I installed matmanager yesterday,after following the instructions above and watching the video from the link posted above.It worked first time.
Maybe try renaming il2fb to just il2 (without the .exe) thats what I did after watching the video.

Who is shouting? I tried just exe and didn't work.Can'tseem to be able to access the download video when I access the site.Do you have to become a member and log in to access the file? At 84 yrs of age, I'm not quite into all this computer knowledge. Not looking for any sympathy. Shafto

To get the video you have to enter a code. When you click on the link you will see instructions to enter a three letter code. Once you do that you will have to wait for about forty seconds. You will see a clock counting down. When the clock reaches zero you should then click on the writing that says Free Download. When you do that you may see some advertising pop up, don't worry about that. Then just click on the Save option and save the video to your desktop. Good luck.
BTW, when you type in upper case letters it is taken as shouting http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/25.gif

Just take it easy shafto. One step at a time - we'll get you up and running, just might take a while.
But believe us, it's worth every second (or hour) you invest in it. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif
I hope you uninstalled MAT Manager first before running the MAT Manager self-installer by JG51_Rudel. You need to do that. I you did not, do it now through Start > Control Panel > Add orRemove Programs. It will be listed as IL-2 MAT Manager. Click it, then click the Remove button to the right, and wait till it's finished.
The first thing to do now is start up Windows Explorer.
Start > All Programs > accessories > Windows Explorer.
In the menu select View - Details
Select your IL-2 Sturmovik 1946 folder in the folder window on the left
Make sure both il2.exe and il2fb.exe are in that folder. il2.exe and il2fb.exe not anything else and certainly not something called "exe". "exe" is a file extension for a program.
It should look something like this:
http://i25.tinypic.com/oabtj8.jpg
Just click the link to view the picture. Note IL2.EXE is there as well as il2fb.exe MAT Manager only looks for il2.exe (IL2.EXE is no problem) or pf.exe - it does not look for il2fb.exe When you setup MAT manager you only point it to your IL-2 Sturmovik 1946 folder - it will look in that folder for a program called il2.exe. If it does not see it it says Application not found and doesn't work.
If there is something called il2 but not il2.exe right-click it and select Properties. It should show the full il2.exe name now,right of the icon, and Type of file: Application below that. Windows is set up in a way to hide many things from users. Some Microsoft insanity. They do it all the time and never learn.

MaxMhz,I followed your instructions.Deleted MatManager.In IL246 there are the two exe files.when I go to propertes on il2b after theicon, theil2b shows but no type of file shows. Now what and thanks for your help. Shafto

il2fb is no problem for MAT Manager. The file type should show below the icon like this:
http://i28.tinypic.com/zl2bg1.gif
Anyway, like said, MAT Manager does not see il2fb.exe, and il2.exe now will be used (since it's a copy of il2fb.exe) anyway.
Once MAT Manager is uninstalled you can start the Self-Installer to install it again and then use the walkthough posted above to configure it.
It should work this time. If not,just post, there's more time to invest on it. Many people have problems getting to grips with MAT Manager in the beginning.

If il2.exe is in the IL-2 Sturmovik 1946 folder it should work.
OK - I'm assuming you uninstalled the old MAT Manager, then re-installed through the 2.36 Self-Instraller by JG51_Rudel.
il2.exe is present, so start MAT Manager.
Click the Setup button in the control Panel, then select the top choise - A browser window opens. Select your IL-2 Sturmovik 1946 folder under th Ubisoft folder. If you had older versions of FB or PF installed make sure Ubisoft is one word and not "Ubi Soft" - that's a trap the jokers from Ubi set up for us to make it more complex.
It should look something like this:

I did have Rudels self installer installed before. It still didn't pick up the il2.exe . I'll install it again but I woudn't bet the ranch on it that it will work. I did at one time have the manager installed but some other problem "default skins" so I had to delte il2 and reinstall the game. I believe this second reinstall of the gameand that's where I am now. thanks Shafto

whao - first rule of Windows:
NEVER EVER "just delete" a program. ALWAYS un-install through Add or Remove Programs under Control Panel, though an uninstall option under start - all programs etc belonging to the program you want to remove, or through a specialized uninstaller program where you can select the program you want to remove. DO NOT delete files or folders belonging to programs. You will mess up your system BIG time if you do.
Before installing any version of MAT Manager (including the self-installer) you need to uninstall (NOT delete) the older version present on your system. Failure to do so will have unexpected and impossible to predict results (read problems).Never interrupt an installer/uninstaller - wait untill it is done completely.

OK so I followed all the advised steps to install Mat Manager on Windows Vista and everything works fine until I push Quit and then I get the message:
"Runtime Error '339'
Component 'comctl32.ocx' or one of its dependents is not correctly registered, a file is missing or invlaid"
Now I have done a complete uninstall of Mat Manager and tried again but with the same result...
Any ideas?

I have failed in my efforts to use this program.I have to be doing something wrong but just don't know what. I quit and may try again at a later time but I've spent too much time on this with the same result always. Thanks again for all the help. Shafto

You could try downloading the file from the link and installing it, but you should wait to see what Max or Urufu has to say about that. Good luck.

Try using the "X" close button top-right instead of "Quit". - I seem to remember this coming up before vaguely.
