Random Slow Down

Hi, while playing the gmae i've been getting random slow down patches that last usually 5-10secs (or constantly in larger areas).

THe game slows down to <1FPS and becomes un-playable. Happens alot during collisions/explosions.

I've tried different graphics settings as well as updating my drivers

Any Help apprechiated

CPU: AMD Athlon 4800+ 2.5Ghz (Dual core)
GPU: ATI Radeon 4870 (512mb)
RAM: 2GB
OS: Windows Professional 64-bit Edition

Are you playing with DirectX 10 or DirectX 9?
