Good PC FPS

Well the topic says it. Today I got an overwelming urge to play a great PC FPS again. I've been such a 360 geek the past year and a half, and haven't played my PC at all really.

I was thinking about STALKER, but I never upgraded my PC, so I'm running a AMD 4000+, 6800 512, Gig o' ram. How do you guys think it will play for me? I'm in between the minimum and recommemded, but I want to make sure I'll have a good mixture of graphics and gameplay.

Erm, I recommend either Call of Duty 1 + 2. Theres still a huge community playing those online, and they are still fun, holding their own even today

And they have relatively low spec requirements too.

Well on my old card, which was a 7800GTX 256mb, I could run most of the sliders to 3/4, its also going to depend on what resolution you play at, I was playing at 1280x1024 then. You could definitely play it, especially with this little mod http://www.thefloatingpoint.org/main/download.php?view.24

STALKERs going to be either a hit or miss for you though, just remember its a PC gamers game, its not very forgiving so its easy to get frustrated with, keep with it and you should love it.

Such an old game, but so much fun. It runs on my POS PC with integrated video card (IDK, 64 or 128 MB at best)

Oh for online play, nothing beats out Day of Defeat. Go for that one if you want a online experience.

Well, I had COD 1 and sold it, I never really got into the gameplay.

I've spent countless hours on CS:S, I have DoD also, but I never really got into that game too much. I'm not very big on class based games, plus DoD was reaaaally fast paced. So I want something new, hence STALKER.

I saw in another topic that you said STALKER was a strict PC gamers game, which originally roused my interest in it. I'm gonna check out that mod.

Its a mod that improves performance by at least 20%, does a lot of other graphical enhancements as well, its more than worth it.

HEHE I envy you PC gamers....as much as I love consoles PC was where it all started for me...I just can't keep up with the rate of upgrading you need so I've fallen so far behind in upgrades that I can't even play some of the games you guys are listing as old but good games... http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_frown.gif Need to get a serious gaming PC like my Uncle...he can play crisis no probs.

Well to my surprise, Mass Effect has quite the dark atmosphere, and to even more of my surprise, ME feels like it was made for the PC, they did a awesome port job.

Yah from what i have heard the PC version actually plays better than the console version. I have yet to test that out though.

I downloaded STALKER from steam. I got the float mod also, it only took about 2 minutes to download and install, did I do everything right?

u shouldtn have gotten stalker. it is not a good game. its just not an all around good shooter. you should have gotten crysis

I heard Crysis looked pretty, but lacked in depth and story. STALKER's been really cool so far.

stalker lacks creativity. everything in there is plain and has been used before alot more. crysis is pretty and does alot of cool things. i dont wanna get into detail but yeah stalker bores me.

Yup, you did everything right, assuming you patched the game as well.

@ Double Agent: No, just for STALKER, although the same guy is working on a Crysis version to be released sometime soon.

... seriously man, I can't beleive I forgot to patch my game.

O wait, I downloaded throught STEAM, I wasn't sure if it updated while it was downloading. I guess I should check.

EDIT: I just saw that you need the newest version of STALKER, the graphics on Ultra dynamic, and the newest Direct X. I'm updating my video card driver now and getting the STALKER updates. Is 1.0006 the newest version? Also the newest version of direct X is 9.0c if you don't have Vista, right?

Yeah, I got the 1.005 patch, but I wouldnt guess there is a whole lot of differences with .005 and .006

9.0c is the latest DX9 yes. Also when updating your video card driver, uninstall the old driver completely, restart your PC, then reinstall the new driver. If you have anymore questions let me know.

Well, the game updates when you download it. THe patches were already installed.

Anyhow, when I turn it to Ultra Dynamic my game plays like craaaaap. dunno

I didn't fully uninstall the old driver first... forgot about that.

You probably want to stay with "Objects Dynamic light" only, w/e the middle option is, basically the same as the other except lots of performance improvements.
