Ive just read a new article that if you are not medicated for you malaria regularly you will turn into a vomiting mutant. If this game is suppose to be close to realistic you should just die if you are not medicated. I do support being medicated regularly for malaria to make the game a little more interesting but malaria usually doesn't turn you into a mutant. If you want to see the article Google Far Cry 2 and hit news.

I just read this too on Games Radar. I was wondering if this was true also. They said the article came out of Edge Magazine. Looks like I am going to have to pick up a copy to see the validaty of this.
This changes everything about preconceptions about this game. I totaly thought there was no Science Fiction in this game like the original game had. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_confused.gif

This is a load of bollocks. If you read it come with some sources to check. Otherise don't write stuff down.
Even though it immediately sounded like a load of bollocks I nonetheless just went to GamesRadar and could not find any news like that.

They mean in the figurative.
Nonetheless, I would have liked some kind of monsters or fantasy elements in the game, if not to spice up the rather bland realistic story a bit, or to continue the trajectory of the rest of the franchise.

Thanks CuZtds, I don't like being called a liar. I didn't really link the source because Games Radar cited a magazine and I can't get my hands on that magazine untill the 22nd since I live in the United States.
Why would Ubisoft tell us that there was no element of Science Fiction, and then reverse and change their mind? Did they think their fans were upset because FC2 really isn't a FC1 sequel?
They could have come out and been straight forward from the beginning, but this is such a big radical departure from what we originally thought. I agree with you CuZtds, this is really disturbing news.
On the plus side, it now feels like true sequel to FC now with a science fiction element. Well, I don't know if that is a plus..... http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_confused.gif

Not sure I'd call it science fiction but I understand what you mean.
I can see once the game is released those inexperienced players screaming for health cheats!! http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/sadeyes.gif http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

I guess there is some truth in the title then although turning into a mutant as suggested in the title of the topic is far from what they seem to mean.
Can't say I'm really enthusiast about this storyline change. Sounds more like something from previous console versions jumping over to FC2 rather then anything else....

Like this poster said; they are talking metaphorically.
Above GamesRadar's article:"Far Cry 2 will make you a metaphorical monster".

I'm taking this as a metaphor here, but I think having to take medicine for your malaria might be an interesting gameplay element. As long as it gives you realistic symptoms I'm fine with it.

Why is there a problem with this? They are turning the traditional "become a bad guy if you don't run around and get stuff like crazy" concept on its head. Actually, most games do force you to be pretty ruthless to be a "good guy" but it's been an oversight in most games. It's good to see them taking simple ideas and trying to turn them into something else.
Sheesh, just wait until the game comes out and then see if you like it or not. Can't developers have some vision of their own? O_o

The reason there is apprehension is that LP's words could be read in a variety of ways.
One being that if you dont take the medication you will have beyond human endurance to pain etc.
That sounds awfully like the predator from the console versions and not like the "realism" that was pitched when this title was 1st announced.
This is an earlier quote from Clint:
<BLOCKQUOTE class="ip-ubbcode-quote"><div class="ip-ubbcode-quote-title">quote:</div><div class="ip-ubbcode-quote-content">"In a sense we had a mandate to reinvent the brand and do what we felt needed to be done."
"It was really up to us whether we wanted to consider the console games as part of that or not. We decided not to, not because we didn't want to--like I said, none of them had even shipped yet. We didn't know if they were good. We didn't necessarily know what was going to happen. So it was like, okay, if you want us to reinvent it, we'll go Far Cry PC, Far Cry 2 PC, and the console games are the console games." </div></BLOCKQUOTE>
Of course, as posters here have mentioned, if you take everything figuratively, then it could mean something completely different and the "enhancements" may be minimal though noticeable.
Speaking personnaly, for me Far Cry was all about a man and his wits against the environment around him. Its nonlinearity leant itself to a huge level of immersion.
The second it is suggested that the protagonist is something more or less than human, rightly or wrongly I get worried...
Thats the problem with sound bites taken out of context. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_rolleyes.gif Hopefully we will see clarification on this in the near future.

I would really like to get my hands on that magazine article from Edge. I would take bets that a lot of that is taken out of context on Games Radar. Anybody from the UK read that magazine?
The 22nd can't get here any sooner. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_frown.gif

From Game Radar:
<BLOCKQUOTE class="ip-ubbcode-quote"><div class="ip-ubbcode-quote-title">quote:</div><div class="ip-ubbcode-quote-content">"Don't expect mutants as some surprise later on," adds Far Cry 2 producer Lois-Pierre Pharand. Instead, your adventure through the African savannah could turn you into a mutant, feared and reviled by enemies and allies alike. </div></BLOCKQUOTE>
Not being a doctor or knowing much about medicine....I don't not how contracting Malaria can turn one into a mutant. Sure, your not going to be popular and no one will want to be around you but mutant? If taken literally I can see how this would be disturbing and cantrary to what UBISOFT had promised. Imo, you won't be seeing a mutilated, disfigured characters with super strength in the game.
FYI......
What are the symptoms of malaria?
"Plasmodium falciparum malaria cases, the most common in Africa, can be diagnosed as either uncomplicated or severe, and the treatment regimen varies accordingly. Uncomplicated malaria usually results in mild fevers, minimal vomiting and does not cause delusions or other mental problems. For people that have had frequent bouts of malaria and have built a certain amount of resistance, uncomplicated malaria does not normally require hospitalisation, and affected patients usually remain ambulatory.
Severe malaria usually occurs in people that are either immuno-suppressed or have no immunity at all. Young children and pregnant women are particularly at risk as well as people that travel to malarial areas and have no prior immunity.
The symptoms of complicated malaria include convulsions, impaired consciousness and respiratory distress that may take the form of acidosis 1 , ARDS 2 or pulmonary oedema 3 . Patients can also become jaundiced, start haemorrhaging, experience renal failure and go into circulatory shock."

I think the writer accidentally read too much into the "metaphorical" aspect of Clint's quote! Check out the latest Kotaku post: http://kotaku.com/347032/far-cry-2-wont-ruin-itself-with-mutants

I think we've got the definitive answer right there http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif
I don't like monsters and freaky stuff in games; they scare me too much and I get all tense...Thats why many FPS's I don't play. Hearing growls and seeing blood trails, all that suspense, man...
But I found them alright in Far Cry once I knew what each area had in store and where the mutants were.
After completing the game and looking back, it seems they brought a different style of play and tempo into the game. With the soldiers I could hang back all the time, wait for them to come to me and take them down. But with the mutants I was sprinting around like a man on fire (but that could just be my FPS inexperience showing through).
It got crazy though, with mutants performing super-flips while shooting with pinpoint accuracy...and withstanding mega-damage like it was nothing...
With no mutants Ubisoft should be cooking up some other methods to modify the tempo and play style in FC2 to keep it alive. Maybe a rabid deer or two.

It's malaria, a potentially fatal disease. you aren't a mutant, you're going to die if you don't get treatment.

I used to read EDGE magazine a lot, IMO it is one of the only games magazines that actually gives honest reviews for the console games.
So many other mags believe the hype and possibly might even get offered sweeteners of a scoop - details and pictures of the latest games, in return for a good review. Who knows I am sure it happens.
The Edge magazine is quality in way of the pages and actual structure of the mag, well respected and they say it like it is.
I think I will purchase the mag for the FarCry info alone.

I don't know why it would be so bad. If you wouldn't want to play as a mutant you'd just get a cure. Players that do want a change in gameplay, don't get the cure. Everyone wins!
But still, it was probably just a metaphoricaly

Dunno if it's been mentioned, but gamesradar have edited their article to say that there are DEFINITELY NO MUTANTS.
I read another interview where the jist seemed to be more like without your meds "You get very sickly and become a real scumbag of a person as you keep killing, burning and maiming people", which you ultimately have to do to make it through to the end of the game. Kinda like in Star Wars where you start turning toward the dark side and become very vile.
