I see that my thread regarding the swastika ban was closed. No problem with that; it was inevitable that it would be closed as it did degenerate into a political discussion aside from my intention for it: as it related to SH3. I would think that the original scope of the thread was on topic and not political, insofar as it related to the game. My original query was its possible effect on the game, and those who play it: Would it result in players using it in a mod violating that proposed law?

Some good points raised in that thread off of the original topic, but those types of discussions, being political in nature and therefore liable to becoming contentious, are against forum rules and VG did his job as a moderator in closing that thread. This thread is not meant to be a continuation of that closed thread. Please do not attempt to continue the discussion from that thread [which resulted in its closure] in this thread. I am only commenting here to thank Mittelwaechter for his post which quoted the proposed law and his conclusion that the swastika would still not be allowed in the game.<div class="ev_tpc_signature">

I too will not comment on the issues that caused the closing of the previous thread.

I did, however, find the previous thread enlightening, as it is always interesting to get insights on opinions and viewpoints held by people elsewhere in the world.

Yes, and I also found out our resident hardware grog, The Real Potoroo, is quite adept at social commentary as well.<div class="ev_tpc_signature">

Would it not be possible to HAVE a political thread/forum on the 'heavenly website of UBI'. You know where we all can thrash it out in a gentlemanly manner that is the tradition of the Kriegsmarine?? http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/partyhat.gif http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/winky.gif http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/11.gif

I agree.

While I do understand that political debates are outside the scope of this forum, a forum dedicated to that purpose would be truely interesting.

.....And all should note that while different opinions were expressed in the now closed thread, the discussion never departed from a civil, gentlemanly exchange.

I understand your viewpoint, KLCarroll, but I see by your registration date that you were not around for some discussions that got really hot before your time here. The moderators had eventually to get involved and rap a few knuckles. It is because of such past discussions that got out of hand that the recently higher level of enforcement has come about. VG closed that previous thread because it had the potential of becoming contentious. Lately, we have had better moderation of this forum and I'm certain that because of this, we have had some nasty situations headed off before they occurred.<div class="ev_tpc_signature">

Undoubtedly. As a case in point consider Combat Flight Simulator 3. Luftwaffe aircraft had the swastika on their tail, something a bit more visible than a flag on a Uboat. Microsoft didn't bother providing two versions of the skins for different markets, as Ubisoft did with its European and US versions of SH3. Skinners tend to provide two tails for Luftwaffe aircraft though, one with the swastika and one without. I see no reason to expect SH3 modders would do otherwise. Some would do it because they regard SH3 as a simulation rather than merely a game, and some would do it out of obstreporousness. Such is the way of things and why would you expect anything different?

However, given this topic has arisen before I'm curious why it's been resurrected as we only end up covering the same ground (except when we get to slip in a New'n'Exciting Digression? before VG catches on).<div class="ev_tpc_signature">

Quite simple, if you don't like to see a swastika in your game, you have no reason to buy such a game. The past is the past, and the rest is HISTORY. Other than that, I suggest you play Donkey Kong instead.<div class="ev_tpc_signature">
