Was sort of curious:
When HQ cuts you loose where do you go to run up your tonage?

Around early to mid '43 if I happen to be around Truk at all there is a corridor that is northwest and heads toward the Marianas. I've found the hunting there very good for both warships and merchants. Even seen the Yamato a couple of times but was never close enough to get a shot at her. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-indifferent.gif

I run to 'convoy college' and if the fishing isnt good there, then I go to 'the slot'.

When I play the US side, I like to hunt the approaches to Manila and the strait between Borneo and the Celebs.
When I am in my U-boat, it is the approaches to Freemantle, or the seas north of Australia.

Depends on where I'm based out of...if I'm based in SubPac (Midway or Pearl) I like to hunt the Bungo, approaches to Truk and The Slot. However, if I'm based out of Fremantle my usual spots are the shipping lanes in the South China Sea, choke points in the Celebes and Sulu Seas and of course Convoy College.

I like around mainland japan. There are a ton of liners. (Bad joke there)
With my Unterseeboot I like the straits north of austrailia because a lot of Task Force's pass through there.

If HQ cuts me loose, i take my U-796 XVIII uboat to the straight just above australia.
However most of the time i'm not in the mood to sit and wait for hours so i go to freemantle, Brisbane, Sydney or other ports of intrest to see what cute toys the royal navy have so that they're down with the fishies a few minutes after i spotted them
To my surprise after i went into silent running mode for an hour creeping up to Freemantle i found a task force of a Fleet carrier, a king George battleship and 2 kent heavy cruisers that where anchored just outside the port.
due to the latest achievement in the German Kriegsmarine i had my sub outfitted with a special coating all around my sub and snorkel and just sent em down to the bottom one after another..
the poor battleship even started up her engines trying to make a break for it, but i managed to put a signle torp into her munnition storages..
Had myself a nice little campfire till the early morning dawn arrived, i then left, and returned safely to my port a week later.
The end !

Using historical RSRD for traffic, my overall favorite shipping lanes would be Borneo/Palawan passage and Formosa. The lane in RSRD in 43 from Truk to Home Waters is also good, generally hang out about 75nms east of Saipan.

I must've been really tired or in a zombie mindset. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/51.gif I know my sleep patterns are all shot to Hades, but I certainly wasn't in a NJ state of mind when I posted that.http://www.freesmileys.org/smileys/smiley-confused005.gif

Based on my current patrol (May of 1942), I might be spending more time in the East China Sea. Area 11-B, northeast of Formosa is pretty hoppin' right now. You're lucky to find 300ft of water so you have to take some care during daytime attacks because there are plenty of air patrols.
