Ok folks .. I dunno if this will help all of you who are crashing but here goes ...
There is a checkbox option under video/sound that is labeled "use HW cursor". By default it is off (or it was on mine anyways). All this time I have been playing the game it has been unchecked. I have been crashing like mad, and the few times I could play it was very choppy and slow ... even on lowest settings.
Just for the hellofit I checked the box and started a new map. Holy smokes it's like a new game. I'm not kidding ... no crashes, smooth as silk at 1024x768, very high, eyecandy on, AA/AF on etc etc.
However ... when I tried to load a game I had saved while having the box unchecked, it crashed. So I started a new map and saved over the old one. Problem solved.
