View Full Version : Run silent, Run deep

With the upcoming SHIV i decided to take a look at a film my dad told me about. Run Silent, Run Deep stars Clark gable and Burt Lancaster in a film set in the Pacific theatre about a Sub Commander (Gable) who gets sunk by a Japanese destroyer but survives gets another command and goes out to dearch for the destroyer that sunk him, disobeying orders and nealy causing his first officer(Lancaster) and crew to mutiny in the process.
It is in black and white and was made in the late 1950s i think, so there isn't any mind blowing special effects but i really enjoyed it. I couldn't help but notice how much larger the sub(i believe it was a Gato but i am not too hot on US subs) seemed compared to the Type VII, they are all having dinner around a table in one scene and all i can think about was that tiny little table on U-96 in Das Boot.
Anyone else seen it? Is it a realistic depiction of the inside of the sub and operations in general?

Yeah, ....I have it on DVD: A GREAT old movie!
The majority of the scenes featuring the sub are quite accurate.

Sorry guys, hate to say this, but the movie really sucked compared to the book. The author should have sued the studio, or the movie should have been called something else. It is a good movie, but has nothing at all in common with the book.
The credits state it was based upon the book, very very loosely based, as they completely destroyed the characters.
All I'm saying is, read the book, it is amazing. The movie too is good (however over acted), but both are nothing alike and as such, should not be compared

Well the inside of the Nerka(wrong sub) was dipicted acuretly. I have been to the Sub in Maraland(a Balo) and the Officer Mess/Wardroom dose look like that. I belive they used a actul sub. And the Gato/Balo/Trench is no where near like the VII. Its way biger. Evean bigger than the IXD2.
Balo, 311ft 9in long
VIIC, 220ft 1in long
IXD2, 287ft 5in long

What movie was ever greater than the book. Still "Run Silent, Run Deep" is a great movie. I also liked "Destination, Tokyo" with Cary Grant. Check out "Operation Pacific" starring John Wayne. This movie portays some of the events that happened during the war. The torpedo problems, also a reenactment of the events that happened to the USS Growler when her commanding officer was killed in action. I believe that Cdr Howard Gilmore was the first submarine officer of the war to be awarded the Medal of Honor, posthumously of course.
