I'd have to admit that I bought Uru for two, equally valid reasons (in my mind). I voted for your "play Uru Prime" choice, because I've always been primarily a single player in any game I've ever owned. This extends even to games that have extensive multiplayer aspect to them. I recently became much more interested in the Adventure game genre after playing Syberia, and intended on growing my Adventure game collection with Uru. But, low and behold, I hear of this incredible pre-order offer that would allow me to get all four Myst adventure games all at the same time, for the price of one. I could not pass that up, and thus I jumped on the bandwagon.
Having now completed both Myst and Riven, and moving into Exile before Uru, I'm entirely satisfied with that choice. The games, so far, have made me quite interested in the series and I will be taking part in the Uru Live Prologue (and the free trial period) to get a feel for if it's something I'd like to do online. Regardless of whether I continue with the online portion or not, I fully intend on continuing adventuring in the Myst "universe" for as long as they make the games.

My answer is "To Play URU Live and knew it was Pay2Play!"
Although, since the question is "Why did you buy Uru?", I wish you had dropped the "I will not buy it" choice and added: "To Play URU Live and knew it was Pay2Play but did not know it was broadband only". http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_wink.gif
More seriously, the previews out there (Gamespot, JustAdventure, The Inventory) all mention the online component. As a veteran of MMORPG's, I knew I'd have to pay a subscription for that.
2 of my friends who knew a tiny bit more about the game than me also presented it as Myst with the ability to play online.
That's a first for adventure games and it got me really excited about the idea. I am in a small discussion group with half a dozen adventure players (we've been chatting together for close to 10 years) and they are very intrigued at the idea of going online to play an adventure game too.
This is a first and a really exciting one in that market.
Whether it is subscription based or not and whether it requires broadband or not, I bought the game to play Uru Live. the one thing that all the other adventure games out there won't let me do.
Let's hope that turns out to be possible.

I bought it mainly to play single player but I hope to eventually get online with it. My only problem is that I had to buy a new computer to play it on and it wont come until next week. So I get to look at the box and anticipate....

If the questions in the poll had asked simply why the game was bought...for online, offline, or both it would be an interesting...and very possibly enlightening thread. If it was so important to start up the "I didn't know, I thought it was free" issue, then fine. That would be another 'enlightening' thread. The fact is, qualifying the second choice with the second issue is simply opening up the same old.....same old(read: dead horse), that has been going on for some time now in the previous forum.
I stand by what I said.

I knew exactly what I started when I created this thread. I created it because the topic was already coming up here in multiple posts. I felt before I made any more comments on the subject that I needed some input on the issue. What I'm not sure about is if the poll only lets you vote once, change your vote, or vote multiple times.
Sure, it's a bit of a dead horse. But as long as people are going to keep bringing it up, heh.
Wendy, I agree. I actually almost started two threads at once. One with this poll and one with a:
"Why did you buy URU?
To play Online.
To play Online with friends.
To play the Single Player Version.
Because I LOVE EVERYTHING MYST!
Because I LOVE EVERYTHING CYAN!"
and a dozen other options. The reason I didn't do it was because I didn't have enough poll items to choose everything I wanted.
Oh well.

I bought it for 1 reason alone.
It's made by Cyan Worlds.
I know I wouldn't be dissapointed and don't imagine I will be in the future.

Ok, I really did try to come up with a version two of this question, but ran into the same problems that stopped me from doing it before.
So, someone care to proofread my idea for a new poll and pick better questions? We only get five.
"v2 OF: Why did you buy URU?
1) Because it looked really cool.
2) Because I love EVERYTHING MYST!
3) Because it's made by Cyan.
4) Because UbiSoft released it!
5) Haven't bought it yet."
Input on this is great,
thanks.

Two reasons:
I'd just bought the Myst 10th anniversary pack and played my first Myst game and enjoyed it. I downloaded the demo and it was FUN!
Secondly - the box intimated that there would be online play included. My brain ran away with this idea. I'm really excited for Urulive when it finally rolls around for me. Can't say I'm excited about paying for something I didn't know was pay for play - I don't tend to make many impulse videogame purchases, and this is the reason why.
Ah well, it'll be really cool when it rolls around.

I bought Uru, first because it was part of the Myst series and I've played all the previous games, seeing all the screenshots and pictures released over the previous months just got me really excited about playing this new adventure and exploring the new ages. And secondly the ability to play online as well was even more exciting, sharing the journey with fellow travellers I think will be a unique experience. I've been playing online games for the past 5/6 years, mainly first person shooter games, so this one is going to be an interesting experience that I can't wait to happen.

That's a fair comment. I can't disagree with it. However, I hope you'll be happy to see that posters have actually risen above that and focus more on why they are excited about the game. It makes for an interesting read, I think.
And it's great to see that most of those who post seem to be excited by the prospect of getting online together. I, for one, am looking forward to it.
It definitely sold the game to me.

Hi Maztec,
First let me say that I hate polls and multiple choice tests and quizes in general. They don't ask specific enough questions, and I tend to susbcribe to Mark Twain's opinion of statistics when he said, "There's lies, damn lies and statistics."
That having been said I think you're on the right track with finding out why people bought Uru, so I'm going to answer you question, just not with the poll. The devil, after all, is in the details, and I think it's the details you really want here.
I bought Uru because I've been playing the Myst Universe games since Day One (I even own Pyst, but that's because I'm a long time fan of the Firesign Theatre). I have always been intrigued by the idea of writing books that lead to other universes (I like Roger Zelazny's work for that reason too). I study physics, not as a profession, but because it interests me, and I read a lot of science fiction, mostly the hard kind. And when I read I play a movie in my head. The better the writing, the more complex and detailed that movie becomes.
When I ran across Myst the first time I was fascinated, not only with the concept, but with the execution of the game. I introduced two friends to it and the three of us played it together one day. That began, for me at least, the idea of a community in the Myst Universe. I'd be curious to know from Rand whether he had it in mind from the beginning to build a community with his game, or if he was just following his own personal idea of universes created from imagination and writing. I wonder about that because the communities seemed to spring up almost at once and he either intended that or was happily surprised. And it was interesting watching them grow and interact. I'm not much of a writer, but I even managed to contribute to the original Rivenguild Library many years ago, and still have my original descriptive book chapter. When Uru first began revealing itself (not merely as Mudpie, but later), I added two more chapters to that book. I'm still not much of a writer, but it's still fun to add to the universe, even if I'm the only one who will ever link to this particular Age.
OK Maz, if you've read this far thanks for your patience, I'll be done soon.
I don't play online games even though I have a couple that can be played online. I've just never had the time or inclination. Uru is another thing altogether though, and I do intend to play it online, though probably not as often as some folks here will (time is the biggest factor for me, and not having enough of it). I'll play it online for two reasons. The first is to delve deeper into the Myst Universe and explore more Age and especially D'ni. The second is to see how the community grows and to interact with it. The fact of pay to play doesn't bother me. To quote Robert Heinlein's wonderful acronym, TANSTAAFL, There Ain't No Such Thing As A Free Lunch.
But those are the reason why I bought Uru. Because there is more to the Myst Universe and I want to see as much as I can.

my only concern is the monthly fee will price me out of the game.

Since the voting question fails to have an appropiate answer for me, I feel the need to post.
I bought the game because I totally enjoy the "Myst" series of adventure games. If I get the opportunity to play live during the Prologue, that would be wonderful. As a former beta tester for Uru, I have had a taste of the city and the cavern as well as the neighborhood. If I end up waiting for Live to go fully live, that will be ok as well.

I bought Uru because I loved all the previous Myst games and was interested to play the new one. It wasn't until I researched further that I found out you could customize your own character and play in third person, which I also thought would be interesting. After that I heard of the multiplayer aspect and I would like to see it using the free trial, but once I have to start paying, we'll have to see if I will continue based on my thoughts of it.

Firstly to continue the fantastic Myst legasy
Secondly to Play it with fellow Mystians..
One of the aspects that i love about MMOG's is the ability to chat with others in a full 3D area, My days on AnarchyOnline was filled with fun times exploring and chatting with friends who enjoyed the same game I did.
I wanted to continue this in the Myst series, and got fantasticly excited about this in a Surreal enviornment for a long time...
Then my Dreams were shattered.
Not Cyans fault.. I understand the buisness decision behind it.. it costs money to have servers, and usualy MMOG's loose quite a bit in the first few months... its a nice tactic to get past that.. http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

Cheers to Uru, the snigleplayer rocked.. unforunatly I riped through it in less than 26 hours so that i could have finished it by monday for when i was to get my CDKey so i could register for UruLive.
Ahh well back to Homeworld 2 until that day comes... in january when i pay for UruLive.. and then i hope i dont have to wait any longer

Bought to play another Myst game. And, to play online. I race F1 cars online but there's not much chance to interact with other people socially. So, I'm looking forward to the online game with great anticipation. If most of the nice people on the forum are online, it should be a great time.

I'm very frugal (a cheapskate) but HAD to buy it to play offline... I'm looking forward to playing online as long as it's free. I can only imagine paying a monthly fee if it is cheap, and if tons of content is added regularly... here's hoping!

Wow! Thanks for the great response Corun. That covered a lot of what I was interested in. Now if everyone else would write similar.. Actually, a lot of them DID!
Thank you everyone for rising above the simple poll and providing such interesting and diverse information. It's been very helpful in providing me with understanding.
I wish there had been more options for the poll -- some of the more common ones would have been in it (I had planned to put them there). Oh well, I felt the questions I asked where the ones that answered what I had in mind -- and they have.
The reason I used a poll format rather than a general chat is so that people could choose between answering the poll or making a response -- or do both. That way I get more response and am not limited to one flavor or the other.
Again thank you everyone! http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

I bought URU for two main reasons; firstly for the fact that it is part of the Myst environment, and secondly because I tend to 'collect' 3D games.
Its been fun over the years watching games come out that stretch the performance of computers to provide thought-provoking content in a 3D environment.
I personally look at URU as a world that's fun to visit just for the pleasure of wandering round looking for the 'cool photo' just like the sun haloing Red Rock in Australia, or mist over a loch in Scotland.
Having to complete puzzles to unlock a new area to wander around may fry one of my two brains cells, but it's worth every hour of frustration. I'm looking forward to extending that into the online portion, with the added bonus of meeting fellow adventurers that share similar interests.
Hope to see you all in the not too distant future online,
Tarl Raven
