View Full Version : Has UBI left itself open to be dethroned?

I was just thinking about how SKATE has completely dethroned the Tony Hawk franchise as the number one skateboarding video game. It seems if there was ever a perfect time for another company to come along and introduce a brand new stealth agent IP, now would be a good time considering how much backlash there has been over CONVICTION. Perhaps UBI should consider this and beat any would be dethroners to the punch. It would seem either by enhancing CONVICTONS multiplayer. Or starting work on a new IP. What do you guys think?

I wouldn't say they are in danger of being "dethroned" in as much as I would simply say where there is opportunity to overcome, there is often someone ready to take it.
The game IS a good game. Perhaps not the same as past games of the franchise - but that does not take away from the fact that it is a good game. Its certainly above any straight-to-the-bargin-bin-games.
Plus this is the Splinter Cell franchise. There's still room for error before people start to view it like the Tomb Raider franchise.
I think they did a great job and any game that seeks to dethrone this franchise would not only have do so by taking down Conviction - but every OTHER title that came before it because Splinter Cell really did define this genre if not create it. Those are some big shoes to fill and any game that attempts to beat them at their game would have to do better than this franchise with what its done and may do in the future by a significant amount before it could be considered nothing more than a clone.
I think Sam's ok for now...so long as they don't ever nurf the multiplayer like they did in that last version that saw the spies with NO guns (*shiver*) - now THAT was a mistake. Spies with no guns...lol...

might not be a better stealth game than Chaos Theory. it seems as if every company out there is aiming forthat casual market. It makes sense as development costs rise and production and marketing budgets continue to spiral out of control.
If Hideo Kojima and Ubisoft could make stealth an afterthough in the 2 PREMIER franchises devoted to stealth, why would any other company focus it toward the harcore crowd when casual gamers have taken over the market?
they might make a better stealth game, but it probably won't sell like MGS or SC even if it's successful

The Agent for PS3 looks interesting. Hope it's stealth based game and not another James Bond rip-off.

Admittedly - if a gaming company was going to pull it off, my money would be on a company like EA, or maybe even Naughty Dog (over on the PS3 side of things).
EA, simply because they could throw enough cash and resources at it to make it work by at least the sequeal and Naughty Dog because they appear to still show that they LOVE making games and put passion behind games like Uncharted and Uncharted 2.

I think so if another company started releasing more hardcore games you could easily appeal to GR, RS, and SP fans because Ubisoft has turned all of these games in to more casual mainstream versions with no depth compared to the originals.

Thief 4 and Hitman 5 looks promising. If AA2 does what alot of fans want and adds expanded stealth then Bats himself may beat Sam Fisherprice, and that would be a real blow.

AA was a pretty good game. I'll definitely give it that. But it just wouldn't feel the same as this game I think.
Although both fictional, I think the fans of Splinter Cell games lean more towards more realism in their games and storylines and while some may nitpick the realism of Conviction, it fills that notch a bit more appropriately than AA does.
Still if they get the stealth down it could be a fun ride as well.

They have absolutely left the door wide open for a competitor to come in and steal their stealth crown away from them. It's going to take Ubisoft a good 2-4 years to make another Splinter Cell game. Thief 4 has a golden opportunity save for the fact that people will still have a hunger for a high tech stealth/spy game (Hitman 5 could make a move here). Conviction doesn't have a leg to stand on. It is going to tank HARD in the coming months. Its gameplay is short and shallow, easily discarded and forgotten as new games come onto the market, and that's just the single player. Multiplayer is a total failure.

I have to disagree that they've left the door wide open after all like I've mentioned before this franchise stands on the legs of its entire history and one or two failures over a career of well to do hits is hardly enough cause for an entire franchise to be easily dismissed. Just because your favorite team in a particular sport has a bad season doesn't mean they are washed up for ever, it just means they had a bad season. Same with games, you can't hit them all out of the ball park. Still as I mentioned earlier - this is hardly like the Tomb Raider series that consistently got worse and worse and worse with years and years of creative failure with no end in sight. That franchise was completely ruined until even the name stirs a smirk.
However, it's important to note, how much of that "easily discarded" is simply more of today's increasingly ravenous gaming climate that sees gamers jumping from title to title for their next quick instant fix? Half the people I encounter in online games admit most times during conversation that they are mid-way through several titles they haven't even finished before they raced off and started yet another!
I'm not saying this game is the next best thing since sliced bread - but its certainly nothing thrown together the likes of Rainbow Six: Lockdown. That game LOOKED shoddy when you merely took it out of it's case!
As for any of those other games taking them out of the spot light. They'd have to A) do REALLY well enough to introduce new gameplay and innovation that blows Ubisoft out of the water stealth wise in the genre they pretty much invented and B) after successfully pulling that off so that gamers take notice and sales fly through the roof enough for it to be an obvious hit - then turn around and pull several sequels (all financially backed by investors and under production long enough to not be a hack job thrown together in a few months just for money) out of thin air that are just as good if not better than the first to keep the franchise strong and give it good legs to stand up and run with.
That's no easy task when you're just a so-so franchise like Hitman or unknown game entering a genre already dominated by a known company and franchise.

Maybe....
IO doesn't seem to be in a hurry with Hitman 4, instead more action oriented Kane & Lynch and Kojima Productions got shafted by Konami ; MGS Peace Walker was intended as full blown sequal rather than being forced onto the PSP. Metal Gear Rising seems to be a wildcard. The teaser seemed to hint towards more cyborg Raiden stealth action. Perhaps it'll be like Tenchu ?
The genre just seems to lack focus and some serious balls this gen.

They have chosen to leave the "throne" with the turn to more action in splinter cell and the changes in ghost recon. Time for someone else to offer the hardcore gamers something better and fill the void!

well...Scc has already lost to me
Hitman BM is better for me
it had a PEC system thats was better lol
money that came about how stealth was use
then the great weapon upgrade system that it had with its weapons
then i could have played it action or stealth
even if the AI for action was well......stupid lol
.....................
MGS4 is more of a stealth game then this
people can go though the game without killing even the boss fights or being seen at all

I think if anything, they've redeemed themselves. New formula, lots of room for new gameplay ideas, the potential for progress is there.
The 360 version of Double Agent was unbearable. Especially those excruciating JBA missions... I thought DA would've killed off the franchise since it was such a downgrade from Chaos Theory.

I wouldn't say that Ubisoft have left themselves open to being dethroned, simply because I think hardcore games are probably headed the way of the dinosaur (unfortunately). Given the escalating costs of making games, developers are likely to mainstream them in order to attract the widest possible audience for maximum revenue (especially in the current economic climate). Given that a niche hardcore game is by definition going to attract less buyers, the only way to increase profits would be to increase price (obviously untenable when prices across most games are relatively similar) or decrease costs. And decreased costs likely means a lesser quality game - when hardcore gamers are likely to be the staunchest critics of a game that isn't up to scratch because of insufficient money, this probably doesn't work either.
I simply think that hardcore games are being priced out of the market with escalating costs. Which is a shame, because there is probably a niche of gamers left (as shown by some core supporters on this website) who are demanding a product but can't be supplied profitably.

The difference with Skate (Great game BTW) and Tony Hawk is, TH was the same crap over and over and over again, they never really changed the game much. Ubisoft realizes people don't want to play the game over and over especially one thats 5 years old on the next gen console. Skate introduced something completely brand new and as realistic as it gets. I'm still hoping for a confirmation of a new Hitman at E3 year and depending on the direction it goes it might sit up there with SC.
RaulO4
04-26-2010, 03:25 AM
no tony hawks lost
because it was arcade people wanted realistic
well EA gave them that
Sc in the other hand is a stealth game
if it need to change their are other Stealth aspic it can explore
but what does it do?
Scc Redefine Stealth Action by going back to the basics
set in the dark
like i said MF1 and 2 had a better stealth
it was about using your Camo
in SP or in MP to get the drop on the other guy
now why is stealth in MF was better then SC
because with the camo
you could not see me at all
but Sc when it turn B/W the game is telling you
that you cant be seen
but in my eys you are like in damn daylight and I'm in the light 100 meters away...
2 Basics stealth
one that is useless and the other(which is action base)
is damn right use full.
Sc can go to this road
using Camo
like Mgs3 its stealth but make it realistic
but Scc left STEALTH and went Action
Skate just beat tony hawks
because it went for more realistic type of gameplay
the same reason why Sc beat MGS in stealth

All games are changing to what will make the most money and appeal to casual gamers, instead of the hardcore fan base. Its nothing new, but crying about it for 5 years hasn't done nothing and still wont. Less crying = more games to enjoy.

I'm not talking about your "homies" I'm talking about fanboys in general. In this case CT, 5 years go by, we know what they want. They didn't get it after 5 years what makes you think its going to change in a year or two? Let it go....
Ubisoft is doing there job, just not to your liking.
Sorry I don't play on the PC, so you wont be uninstalling anything. Come to Xbox and I'll give you the RROD http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_rolleyes.gif </div></BLOCKQUOTE>

That is not a fact, that is an opinion. IMO some of the hardcore gameplay elements are there. Sure not every single one, but they wanted to take it into a new direction for a reason. If a company changes and it doesn't please YOU doesn't mean they left anything behind besides an angry fanboy.

and fair enough it's an opinion but it's practically becoming a fact. Ubisoft said themselves that they open it up for CASUAL gamers. Not to mention the entirty of hardcore fans on this forum discussing how this game has become more casual. Theoretically your as much as a fan boy for the new style of gaming as much as hardcore fans are fan boys for the old style. So tossing the term "fan boy" around seems a bit hypocritical.

Stealth is there if you choose to use is, and in Infiltration mode you have to. Gunplay they improved beyond insane (Horrible in previous SC games) but added to much action as a down side, light and shadows are the base of the game, stealth based gadgets (even though they added some action ones as well). The elements are there, they just sped the game up, made the shooting better and added to much action. To me it feels like a Splinter Cell game, just better in terms of controls and not slow clunky movements.
Certain elements I don't consider "Hardcore"
SvM - Made Multiplayer, not the overall game
Moving bodies - you can still do that if you grab them first, CT fans hate shooting right? So what's the big deal?
Lockpicking - Meh it would be nice, but doesn't break the game
Hacking - Read above
Disabling lights - Conviction needs this
Honestly I'm extremely tired to keep the list going, but if you want to make a list on what you think are the hardcore elements I can comment on them based on what I think.

An opinion can never become a fact, that's a fact. The majority of the people left on the forums are just CT fanboys to be honest with you. I'm not a fanboy of any game, I enjoyed all the SC games besides DA, it was ok at best. I like certain things in CT I wish they added in SCC, but there's also things in SCC I hope they add in the next game. I give games a chance and play them for what they are, so I can enjoy it. Instead of constantly comparing it to other games. Like seriously look at my recent games, I'm not going to lie Peggle looked gay as hell, then I actually played it and was like wow this game is actually really fun.....now my GF hogs my Xbox to play it http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_frown.gif

KK well
my list of hardcore elements from previous SC games are as follows
- Moving bodies, once knocked out
- increased shadow hiding/ shadow gameplay
- throwable distractions
- ability to knock people out and not kill
- OCP
- Ability to control movement speed "better"
- Realistic Movements
- Knockout gas
- Guards had better reactions and hearing abilities
- Ability to whistle
-silenced weapons (more)
- Hacking of doors/ lock picking, hacking of security controls/ computers (for information)
- night and thermal vision
- Gadget load outs
things that took away hardcore gameplay
- forced action
- less stealth
- mark and execute
- having to kill everyone
- no creeping past enemies unnoticed
- black and white filter
- last known position
and Infiltration is just hunter mode but you lose if your seen, either way it's "kill everything from anywhere"

no see.... the main issue here is... T9x_69... your a casual gamer. The thing is... us hardcore gamers what something great and entertaining and intriguing, not just a quick fix and to be honest you are a fan boy, if you weren't you wouldn't even bother sticking up for the games you play.

- Moving bodies, once knocked out - Mentioned that in my previous post
- increased shadow hiding/ shadow gameplay - There's definitely tons of shadows in Conviction, no doubt about it.
- throwable distractions - Meh I wouldn't consider it a "Hardcore" element but it would be nice
- ability to knock people out and not kill - Not a big deal but I do agree it should have been there, because its in the co-op
- OCP - Agreed, mentioned this about knocking lights out in my previous post
- Ability to control movement speed "better" - The movement speed is fine, the crouching on the other hand needs to be pressure sensitive
- Realistic Movements - Conviction has very realistic movements IMO, some of the best especially with the cover system
- Knockout gas - Agreeed, I hate having to blow up my sticky cam
- Guards had better reactions and hearing abilities - On Realistic, its pretty damn good, not perfect but much improved over the previous games.
- Ability to whistle - Agree
-silenced weapons (more) - There's a good selection but there should be a silencer attachment for almost every weapon.
- Hacking of doors/ lock picking, hacking of security controls/ computers (for information) - The information part just is boring to me, the others would be nice but its not something I keep saying "Man I miss that" while playing Conviction
- night and thermal vision - I think they took those two smashed them together, made the tint very light green and added static, and called them Sonar Googles, I would like the original NVG but the Sonar do get the good done.
- Gadget load outs - You have every gadget equipped when you play, may not be realistic but its nice.
things that took away hardcore gameplay
- forced action - Agree
- less stealth - Its there, just harder to use
- mark and execute - Agree to a point, its nice but if its over used it kills the gameplay.
- having to kill everyone - To a point yes, I would like to play Infiltration without killing anyone for more replay value, but in the story you don't HAVE to kill everyone.
- no creeping past enemies unnoticed - I ghosted Kobins mansion perfectly fine until I got to the point were I had to interrogate Kobin, so pretty much 99% of the mission.
- black and white filter - AGREE 100%
- last known position - I think it makes it more realistic because in real life if someone throws something at you, your going to check where it came from first for a minute then move on to looking else ware.
EDIT: Oh well that looks hard to read, lol sorry I'm way to tired to go back and edit and make it red or something.
EDIT 2: I spaced everything for you, hope it makes it easier.

I don't understand why everyone says the game needed change or that the franchise was going stale. I don't remember anyone saying that after SCCT was released. All that stuff was made up by UBISOFT to "justify" the change. Of course there was all the people who complained about SvM being too hard or that the spies didn't have lethal weapons and couldn't fight the mercs.

The game was basically the same through all 4 of them (excluding the PSP one). They just improved on it each time, well tried to improve with DA but failed. The series is 8 years old now, its time to get with the program and make a next gen Splinter Cell, and not a slow clunky one. I'm not saying they where bad because back then they where amazing, but now there just dull and stale and needs to change.
Trust me when I say I know what your tying to say, because I'm going through the same thing with SOCOM right now, which is 8 years old as well. I want SOCOM 4 to be like 2, but its just not going to happen, I learned to accept it, let the developers do there job and I'll submit my request and if it gets added then awesome, if not well then I tried. Developers are so focused on the casual fan base right and I don't see that changing anytime soon.

OK.. well I'm glad me and T9x_69 agreed on some things
however it always seems to come down to a matter of opinion. To be honest if you went through a level of chaos theory, and then a level of conviction you'd see the major difference. That's the main issue, all the casual gamers like the new style and all the hardcore gamers like the old, however, ubisoft can;t please both audiences. So the main issue now is that ubisoft only catered for the casual gamers IMO and you'll find a lot of hardcore gamers agree. However ubisoft tried something new and it seemed to turn out fine for a new audience (which is all gaming company's want these days). To be honest the SC series was one of the only good hardcore series left, and that's why all the hardcore fans are depressed. So now it's all in Ubi's hands, whether they test there luck again on the new style or they take it back to the old. In the end it all depends on which side will give them the more money. However if you want to see my way of appealing to both audiences (it's not perfect but...) refer to this FORUM (http://forums.ubi.com/eve/forums?a=tpc&s=400102&f=5271091065&m=8101047558&r=8101047558#8101047558)

Honestly it depends on the mission, I've played a few select mission in Conviction where there wasn't a major difference from CT, besides obvious things they taken out. Not every level though no, because like I said the game is action oriented.
Read my edit above about the casual gamer BS. I really do hate casual gamers with a passion.

You're absolutely correct.
Ubisoft has left itself open to be dethroned ever since the release of the XBox 360 version of Splinter Cell: Double Agent.
I'm just suprised that they have managed to hold on to their crown and sceptre for this long.
